Structure, Conduct and Performance of Timber Market in Ife East Local Government of Osun State, Nigeria
The study focused on the structure, conduct and performance of timber
market in Ife-east Local Governments of Oyo state. The major objective
of this study is to assess the marketing pattern of timber in the study
areas. The research method used for achieving the general objectives
involved Descriptive Statistics and Gini Coefficient. Variations were
observed in the price of the timber of the same species but different
size because price determination is based on bargaining power. The
result showed majority of respondents (58.8%) had secondary education,
Muslim was dominant (54.6%) in the timber marketing and majority of
marketers had regular supply of their product. . Government policy,
high cost of transportation, inadequate credit facilities and high cost
of energy and power were some of the constraints faced by timber
marketers in the study area. The use of modern equipment and machines
are needed to replace the outdated equipment in order to increase the
output and profit. The level of access to credit facilities should be
improved upon by encouraging the respondent to form cooperative
societies so that they can mobilize enough working capital for their
business

“Coming to a Strange Land”: The West African Migrant Women’s Establishment of Home and Family in a New Culture Within Australia
© 2015, © The Author(s) 2015. Purpose: Migrating and establishing a new life in another culture can have diverse health effects especially for women. This article explores the struggles and social adjustment issues that might constitute negatively to the health of West African migrant women living in Australia. Design: Qualitative storytelling. Audiotaped voluntary stories from 20 West African migrant women living in Sydney, Australia were transcribed and analyzed. Findings: Three themes are presented for discussion: (1) But it is different here: life in a new country; (2) I have to do it all by myself: communal versus individual living; and (3) They don’t listen to parents: perceived threats to the family unit. Conclusion/Implication for Practice: The demand for and the importance of nurses and midwives in supporting migrant families is demonstrated by findings suggesting that social adjustment into the Australian culture has a significant impact on both the nuclear and extended family unit of women
Effect of L-Arginine on testicular histology following 7200 torsion - detorsion
This study evaluates the effect L- arginine on testicular histology following 7200 torsion-detorsion at different time intervals. Twenty male rats (130- 200g) were used. They were grouped into seven groups of three rats each (A-G) with group G as control. With an atraumatic silk suture through the tunica albuginea, unilateral testicular torsion was created in groups A-F by rotating the left testicles in the clockwise direction along the longitudinal axis for 15, 30, and 45 minutes respectively. Alternate groups (A,C,E) were treated intraperitoneally with 150mg/kg body weight of L- arginine for 1 hour after detorsion, while the remaining groups (B,D,F) were untreated. The results showed that the control tissue sections presented normal features while group B (untreated) presented atrophic seminiferous tubules with no luminal spermatozoon. Similarly, group C (treated) presented severe oedema, atrophic seminiferous tubules with hyperplasia of germ cells, and reduction in size and thickness of lining cells of the seminiferous tubules. The untreated group E however, showed mild oedema but normal seminiferous tubules with luminal spermatozoa and germ cells in various stages of development, while group F showed severe interstitial oedema as well as loss of germ cells. Comparatively therefore, there was an improvement in the treated group E as compared with that of the untreated group F. Our results suggest therefore, that L- arginine tends to reduce oxidative stress in torsioned testes and helps maintain the seminiferous epithelium, thereby preserving the cells of the spermatogenic seriesKey words: Testicular torsion, L-arginine, Ischemia-reperfusion, Rotation, Spermatic cor
Effects of Organic and Inorganic Fertilizers on the Growth of Senecio biafrae (WOROWO) OLIVE & HIERN
Soils have shown a negative balance in nutrient budget which poses a
great threat to sustainable soil management for increase in growth and
crop yield. This study thus investigated the effects of organic and
inorganic fertilizers on the growth of Senecio biafrae (Oliv.
&Hiern). Topsoil, organic (poultry manure) and inorganic
fertilizers (NPK 15:15:15) were used. The fertilizers were weighed and
applied to the soil at 5g, 10g, 15g each; control topsoil without
application of fertilizers and were replicated five times. Growth
parameters including height, number of leaves and stem diameter were
taken weekly for the period of the experiment. Application of poultry
manure and NPK fertilizer had significant effects on all the growth
parameters considered. The application of poultry manure resulted into
significant increase in the growth parameters towards the latter part
of the study. This study has shown that organic manure has great
potential for improving soil productivity and plant growth
The potential of general practice to support young people who self-harm: a narrative review
BackgroundSelf-harm in young people is a growing public health concern. Young people commonly present to their GP for help with self-harm, and thus general practice may be a key setting to support young people who have self-harmed.AimTo examine the potential of general practice to support young people aged 10–25 years who have harmed themselves.Design & settingA narrative review of published and grey literature.MethodThe Scale for the Assessment of Narrative Review Articles (SANRA) was used to guide a narrative review to examine the potential of general practice to support young people who have self-harmed. The evidence is presented textually.ResultsThe included evidence showed that GPs have a key role in supporting young people, and they sometimes relied on gut feeling when handling uncertainty on how to help young people who had self-harmed. Young people described the importance of initial clinician responses after disclosing self-harm, and if they were perceived to be negative, the self-harm could become worse.ConclusionIn context of the evidence included, this review found that general practice is a key setting for the identification and management of self-harm in young people; but improvements are needed to enhance general practice care for young people to fulfil its potential.</jats:sec
Fibre Characterization of Cassava Peel Leaf Meal and Its Utilization by Broilers
One hundred and twenty ( n = 120) day old broiler chicks with an
average weight (100.00\ub17.00g) were randomly allotted to four
dietary treatments, with cassava peel leaf meal (CPLM) as replacement
for maize at (starter and finisher phases). The trial was in three
phases of adaptation (1-2week),starter (3-5week) and finisher
(6-9week).Thirty broilers chicks were assigned to each of the four
treatments, while was replicated three times at 10 chicks each.
Performance of the chicks such weight gain, feed intake and carcass
yield was evaluated and the proximate and fiber quality of the diets
and CPLM were also determined. Data obtained for performance evaluated
was analyzed using ANOVA, while significant means were separated by SAS
of the same package. The outcome revealed that CPLM had (89.93%) dry
matter, (18.93%) crude protein and (43.28%) NDF, with anon-significant
(p< 0.05) variation in weight gain, enhanced (p< 0.05) feed
intake and depressed (p< 0.05) feed to gain ratio as CPLM inclusion
increased. Dressing percentage values (69.00-73.00%) were obtained on
the treatments. CPLM inclusion (0, 15, 30 and 45%) as replacement for
maize in the diets of broilers produced a favourable performance
