A Survey of Why Students Select South Dakota State University Based on the Opinions, Information Sources, and Attitudes of Entering Students
The purpose of this study is to examine the information sources, attitudes, and opinions, relevant to the selection process, of the 1975-76 entering students at South Dakota State University to discover what reasons students give for selecting SDSU. It is the hope that this study will reveal important information about the students of South Dakota State University, their attitudes, opinions, and sources of information concerning why they attend. This information is sought so those officials in decision making positions can have a better informational base from which to make important judgements affecting the institution and its component parts. Specifically the study is designed to provide information which will hopefully assist those segments of the university vested with the decisions and responsibilities of enrollment, in better assessing their student markets so they can initiate the appropriate services and efforts required to maintain the enrollment goals of the institution. This study is conducted to add to our understanding of the dynamics of the decision process in selecting post-secondary education. The more that is known about an institutionâs composition, the better able are its officials to make decisions necessary for the mutual benefit of all
Facing Up to the Cost-Price Squeeze
The fact of the cost-price squeeze is already with us. Can we face up to the real causes and possible answers? Some are hard to face and not easy to solve. Can we face up to the squeeze in both fact and thought
What Agriculture Is Up Against
Has agriculture itself built all of its present predicament? With so many proposals being made and the time for action coming closer, here\u27s a review of some of the outside forces and their impact on farming
Behind the Cost-Price Squeeze
This article is intended to aid in understanding the present farm situation in relation to the rest of our national economy. It\u27s difficult to solve a problem without understanding underlying factors behind it
Microscopic correlation between chemical and electronic states in epitaxial graphene on SiC(000-1)
We present energy filtered electron emission spectromicroscopy with spatial
and wave-vector resolution on few layer epitaxial graphene on SiC$(000-1) grown
by furnace annealing. Low energy electron microscopy shows that more than 80%
of the sample is covered by 2-3 graphene layers. C1s spectromicroscopy provides
an independent measurement of the graphene thickness distribution map. The work
function, measured by photoelectron emission microscopy (PEEM), varies across
the surface from 4.34 to 4.50eV according to both the graphene thickness and
the graphene-SiC interface chemical state. At least two SiC surface chemical
states (i.e., two different SiC surface structures) are present at the
graphene/SiC interface. Charge transfer occurs at each graphene/SiC interface.
K-space PEEM gives 3D maps of the k_|| pi - pi* band dispersion in micron scale
regions show that the Dirac point shifts as a function of graphene thickness.
Novel Bragg diffraction of the Dirac cones via the superlattice formed by the
commensurately rotated graphene sheets is observed. The experiments underline
the importance of lateral and spectroscopic resolution on the scale of future
electronic devices in order to precisely characterize the transport properties
and band alignments
Analysis of Consumer Perceptions on Payday Loan Services, Asset Ownership, and Financial Management Education
Payday loan services, asset ownership, and financial management have been issues of interest to many consumers and scholars. Using a cross-sectional survey, we analyzed perceptions on payday loan services, asset ownership, and financial management education. The results showed that, only a small number of respondents used payday loan services. A majority had savings and checking accounts, and owned a vehicle; however, a majority did not own an IDA or a home. Furthermore, many were willing to participate in a financial management workshop. We also found that selected socioeconomic factors had statistically significant effects on selected indicators. For instance, gender had a statistically significant effect on using payday loan services. Age and household income had statistically significant effects on owning a home. The number of children under 18 years, gender, age, and household income had statistically significant effects on the willingness to participate in a financial management workshop. The findings show that socioeconomic factors may be important, and should be considered in policies regarding payday loan services, asset ownership, and financial management. Effect of a magnetic field on the two-phonon Raman scattering in graphene
We have studied, both experimentally and theoretically, the change of the
so-called 2D band of the Raman scattering spectrum of graphene (the two-phonon
peak near 2700 cm-1) in an external magnetic field applied perpendicular to the
graphene crystal plane at liquid helium temperature. A shift to lower frequency
and broadening of this band is observed as the magnetic field is increased from
0 to 33 T. At fields up to 5--10 T the changes are quadratic in the field while
they become linear at higher magnetic fields. This effect is explained by the
curving of the quasiclassical trajectories of the photo-excited electrons and
holes in the magnetic field, which enables us (i) to extract the electron
inelastic scattering rate, and (ii) to conclude that electronic scattering
accounts for about half of the measured width of the 2D peak.Comment: 11 pages, 7 figure
Magnetoplasmons in quasi-neutral epitaxial graphene nanoribbons
We present infrared transmission spectroscopy study of the inter-Landau-level
excitations in quasi-neutral epitaxial graphene nanoribbon arrays. We observed
a substantial deviation in energy of the transition
from the characteristic square root magnetic-field dependence of
two-dimensional graphene. This deviation arises from the formation of
upper-hybrid mode between the Landau level transition and the plasmon
resonance. In the quantum regime the hybrid mode exhibits a distinct dispersion
relation, markedly different from that expected for conventional
two-dimensional systems and highly doped graphene
High-Energy Limit of Massless Dirac Fermions in Multilayer Graphene using Magneto-Optical Transmission Spectroscopy
We have investigated the absorption spectrum of multilayer graphene in high
magnetic fields. The low energy part of the spectrum of electrons in graphene
is well described by the relativistic Dirac equation with a linear dispersion
relation. However, at higher energies (>500 meV) a deviation from the ideal
behavior of Dirac particles is observed. At an energy of 1.25 eV, the deviation
from linearity is 40 meV. This result is in good agreement with the theoretical
model, which includes trigonal warping of the Fermi surface and higher-order
band corrections. Polarization-resolved measurements show no observable
electron-hole asymmetry.Comment: 4 pages,3 figure
An Examination of Selected Small Livestock Producersâ Implementation of Identified Best Practices in Alabama
Getting small farmers to adopt âbest practicesâ has been a key challenge in general, but particularly, in the Southeastern U.S. This study focused on selected small livestock producersâ implementation identified best practices in Alabama. Data were obtained through interviews from twelve producers in, primarily, selected South Central Alabama counties emphasizing best practices as well as other production indicators. The subjects were mainly beef cattle and meat goat producers. The identified best practices were: rotational grazing, soil testing, quarantining, deworming, veterinary services, and record keeping. The data were analyzed using descriptive narrative and simple statistics. The demographics showed more male than female producers, and more meat goat producers than beef cattle producers. Also, the results revealed that the commonest best practice was deworming; followed by quarantining, soil testing and record keeping, and rotational grazing. Using veterinary services was the least practiced best practice; most producers chose to provide their own animal health services. The results provide an opportunity for assistance providers to educate producers on the importance of adopting the best practices.
