Galactic Collapse of Scalar Field Dark Matter

We present a scenario for galaxy formation based on the hypothesis of scalar field dark matter. We interpret galaxy formation through the collapse of a scalar field fluctuation. We find that a cosh potential for the self-interaction of the scalar field provides a reasonable scenario for galactic formation, which is in agreement with cosmological observations and phenomenological studies in galaxies.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figue

Steady-state response of a random dynamical system described with Padé approximants and random eigenmodes

Designing a random dynamical system requires the prediction of the statistics of the response, knowing the random model of the uncertain parameters. Direct Monte Carlo simulation (MCS) is the reference method for propagating uncertainties but its main drawback is the high numerical cost. A surrogate model based on a polynomial chaos expansion (PCE) can be built as an alternative to MCS. However, some previous studies have shown poor convergence properties around the deterministic eigenfrequencies. In this study, an extended Pade approximant approach is proposed not only to accelerate the convergence of the PCE but also to have a better representation of the exact frequency response, which is a rational function of the uncertain parameters. A second approach is based on the random mode expansion of the response, which is widely used for deterministic dynamical systems. A PCE approach is used to calculate the random modes. Both approaches are tested on an example to check their efficiency

Back reaction of a long range force on a Friedmann-Robertson-Walker background

    Get PDF
It is possible that there may exist long-range forces in addition to gravity. In this paper we construct a simple model for such a force based on exchange of a massless scalar field and analyze its effect on the evolution of a homogeneous Friedmann-Robertson-Walker cosmology. The presence of such an interaction leads to an equation of state characterized by positive pressure and to resonant particle production similar to that observed in preheating scenarios.Comment: 14 pages, 6 color Postscript figures, LaTe

A microfluidics tool for high-throughput, real-time multimodal imaging of nanoparticle-cell interactions

    Get PDF
The increasing use of nanomaterials for biomedical applications has raised the need for efficient, robust and low-cost high-throughput assessment of nanotoxicity and cell-nanoparticle interactions. Microfluidics provides the tools for high-throughput single-cell functional monitoring, while gold nanorods have unique potential for intracellular tracking and can simultaneously be used as drug carriers. Presented here is a miniaturised platform that integrates these features with a multimodal approach to cell imaging. A microfluidic device allows for trapping of an array of singlecells, followed by the controlled delivery of nanoparticles into the cell array and subsequent real-time multimodal imaging of cellular interactions with functionalised nanoparticles. This system has been successfully used to assess cellnanoparticle interactions at the single-cell level

Time-lapse measurement of single-cell response to nanomaterial : a microfluidic approach

    Get PDF
This work presents the successful application of a single-cell microfluidic platform for high-throughput, real-time screening of nanoparticle-cell interactions. Taking vaccine delivery as a proof-of-concept application, ovalbumin-conjugated gold nanorods were produced and controllably delivered to primary dendritic cells within the device. Time-lapse imaging enabled monitoring of hundreds of single-cells during exposure to a range of concentrations of nanoparticle conjugates and simultaneous quantification of specific cellular functions. This integrated system provides throughput and statistical data comparable to that obtained with flow cytometry but also offers a novel approach to determine the dynamics of nanoparticle-cell interactions and nanoparticle-mediated antigen delivery with single-cell resolution
