Association between Binge Drinking, Type of Friends and Gender: A Cross-sectional Study among Brazilian Adolescents
Background: Hazardous drinking among adolescents is a major public health concern. The purpose of this study was to examine the prevalence of binge drinking/alcohol consumption and its association with different types of friendship networks, gender and socioeconomic status among students in Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais, Brazil. Methods We conducted a cross-sectional study on a representative random sample of 891 adolescents (41% male, aged 15–19 years) from public and private schools in 2009–2010. Information on friendship networks and binge drinking was collected using two validated self-administered questionnaires: the Integrated Questionnaire for the Measurement of Social Capital and the first 3 items in the Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test (AUDIT C). We used the area-based Social Vulnerability Index (SVI), mother and father’s educational background, and the type of school to assess socioeconomic status. The chi-squared test was used to examine the associations between sample characteristics or the type of friends and binge drinking (p-values <0.05 were considered statistically significant). Ordinal logistic regression was used to estimate the association between binge drinking and the independent variables. Results: A total of 321 (36%) adolescents reported binge drinking (5 or more drinks in one occasion), and among them, 233 (26.2%) adolescents reported binge drinking less than monthly to monthly, and 88 (9.9%) weekly to daily. Binge drinking was associated with being male (OR = 1.52, 95% CI 1.01–2.28) and with living in a low vulnerability area (having the best housing conditions, schooling, income, jobs, legal assistance and health) (OR = 1.66, 95% CI 1.05–2.62). Students who reported that their closest friends were from school (as opposed to friends from church) had an increased risk of binge drinking (OR = 3.55, 95% CI 1.91–5.87). In analyses stratified by gender, the association was significant only among the female students. Conclusions: The prevalence of binge drinking was high in this sample of Brazilian adolescents, and gender, low social vulnerability and friendship network were associated with binge drinking
Affirmative Action Bans and Health Risk Behaviors
College affirmative action bans were associated with higher rates of smoking and drinking in underrepresented minority 11th and 12th graders, and these students continued to smoke at higher rates into young adulthood. Policymakers should consider unintended public health consequences of proposals, such as affirmative action bans, that may limit socioeconomic opportunities
Computational Indistinguishability between Quantum States and Its Cryptographic Application
We introduce a computational problem of distinguishing between two specific
quantum states as a new cryptographic problem to design a quantum cryptographic
scheme that is "secure" against any polynomial-time quantum adversary. Our
problem, QSCDff, is to distinguish between two types of random coset states
with a hidden permutation over the symmetric group of finite degree. This
naturally generalizes the commonly-used distinction problem between two
probability distributions in computational cryptography. As our major
contribution, we show that QSCDff has three properties of cryptographic
interest: (i) QSCDff has a trapdoor; (ii) the average-case hardness of QSCDff
coincides with its worst-case hardness; and (iii) QSCDff is computationally at
least as hard as the graph automorphism problem in the worst case. These
cryptographic properties enable us to construct a quantum public-key
cryptosystem, which is likely to withstand any chosen plaintext attack of a
polynomial-time quantum adversary. We further discuss a generalization of
QSCDff, called QSCDcyc, and introduce a multi-bit encryption scheme that relies

School Programs and Characteristics and Their Influence on Student BMI: Findings from Healthy Passages
Background: Little is known about the contribution of school contextual factors to individual student body mass index (BMI). We set out to determine if school characteristics/resources: (1) are associated with student BMI; (2) explain racial/ethnic disparities in student BMI; and (3) explain school-level differences in student BMI. Methods: Using gender-stratified multi-level modeling strategies we examined the association of school characteristics/resources and individual BMI in 4,387 5th graders in the Healthy Passages Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health. Additionally, we examined the association of race/ethnicity and individual BMI as well as the between-school variance in BMI before and after adding individual and school characteristics to test for attenuation. Results: The school-level median household income, but not physical activity or nutrition resources, was inversely associated with female BMI (β = −0.12, CI: −0.21,−0.02). Neither school demographics nor physical activity/nutrition resources were predictive of individual BMI in males. In Black females, school characteristics attenuated the association of race/ethnicity and BMI. Individual student characteristics—not school characteristics/resources-reduced the between-school variation in BMI in males by nearly one-third and eliminated it in females. Conclusions: In this cohort of 5th graders, school SES was inversely associated with female BMI while school characteristics and resources largely explained Black/White disparities in female weight status. Between-school differences in average student weight status were largely explained by the composition of the student body not by school characteristics or programming
Public-Key Encryption Schemes with Auxiliary Inputs

On the triad transfer analysis of plasma turbulence : symmetrization, coarse graining, and directional representation
This article discusses triad transfer analysis via quadratic nonlinearity. To avoid fictitious interactions, symmetrization of the triad transfer is reviewed, including arbitrary orthogonal decomposition and coarse graining. The directional representation of the symmetrized triad transfer is proposed by minimizing the number of edges in a network graph of triad interactions with keeping the energy consistency. The directional representation simplifies visualization and allows us to reduce the energy transfer into a one-to-one relation, while eliminating fictitious interactions in non-symmetrized triad transfer functions. Energy transfer processes among plasma turbulent fluctuations that decompose by the singular value decomposition are analyzed as an application. A network graph visualization clearly demonstrates the importance of symmetrization and the consistency between the symmetrized triad transfer and its directional representation
Very High-Energy Gamma-Ray Observations of PSR B1509-58 with the CANGAROO 3.8m Telescope
The gamma-ray pulsar PSR B1509-58 and its surrounding nebulae have been
observed with the CANGAROO 3.8m imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescope. The
observations were performed from 1996 to 1998 in Woomera, South Australia,
under different instrumental conditions with estimated threshold energies of
4.5 TeV (1996), 1.9 TeV (1997) and 2.5 TeV (1998) at zenith angles of ~30 deg.
Although no strong evidence of the gamma-ray emission was found, the lowest
energy threshold data of 1997 showed a marginal excess of gamma-ray--like
events at the 4.1 sigma significance level. The corresponding gamma-ray flux is
calculated to be (2.9 +/- 0.7) * 10^{-12}cm^{-2}s^{-1} above 1.9 TeV. The
observations of 1996 and 1998 yielded only upper limits (99.5% confidence
level) of 1.9 * 10^{-12}cm^{-2}s^{-1} above 4.5 TeV and 2.0 *
10^{-12}cm^{-2}s^{-1} above 2.5 TeV, respectively. Assuming that the 1997
excess is due to Very High-Energy (VHE) gamma-ray emission from the pulsar
nebula, our result, when combined with the X-ray observations, leads to a value
of the magnetic field strength ~5 micro G. This is consistent with the
equipartition value previously estimated in the X-ray nebula surrounding the
pulsar. No significant periodicity at the 150ms pulsar period has been found in
any of the three years' data. The flux upper limits set from our observations
are one order of magnitude below previously reported detections of pulsed TeV

Az ún. salutogenezis modell olyan keretet kínál, amelyben a koherencia élmény bevezetésével lehetőség nyílik az „egész”-ség dinamikus értelmezésére. Vizsgálatunkban a Richard Rahe-féle, az „élet értelme” koherencia kérdőív összefüggéseit vizsgáltuk az egészségi állapottal. A Hungarostudy 2002 felmérés a 18 évesnél idősebb magyar népességet életkor, nem és terület szerint képviseli. 12 640 személlyel vettünk fel otthoni interjút. Az így vizsgált koherencia mutatót az egészségi állapot igen fontos előrejelzőjének találtuk. Ha az adatokat életkor, nem és iskolázottság szerint korrigáltuk, az egészségi állapot önbecslése mintegy 10-szer, a munkaképesség 8-szor jobb, a depresszió valószínűsége 7-szer alacsonyabb volt. Az „élet értelme” mutató igen szoros kapcsolatban áll az önhatékonysággal, a problémaorientált megbirkózással, a társas támogatással, ezzel szemben kevésbé függ az iskolázottságtól, az életkortól és a nemtől
Search for TeV gamma-rays from SN 1987A in 2001
We searched for TeV gamma-rays from the remnant of SN 1987A around 5400 days
after the supernova. The observations were carried out in 2001, from November
16 to December 11, using the CANGAROO-II Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov
Telescope. In total, 708 minutes of ON- and 1019 minutes of OFF-source data
were obtained under good conditions. The detection threshold was estimated to
be 1 TeV, due to the mean zenith angle of 39. The upper limits for the
gamma-ray flux were obtained and compared with the previous observations and
theoretical models. The observations indicate that the gamma-ray luminosity is
