A Large-scale Distributed Video Parsing and Evaluation Platform
Visual surveillance systems have become one of the largest data sources of
Big Visual Data in real world. However, existing systems for video analysis
still lack the ability to handle the problems of scalability, expansibility and
error-prone, though great advances have been achieved in a number of visual
recognition tasks and surveillance applications, e.g., pedestrian/vehicle
detection, people/vehicle counting. Moreover, few algorithms explore the
specific values/characteristics in large-scale surveillance videos. To address
these problems in large-scale video analysis, we develop a scalable video
parsing and evaluation platform through combining some advanced techniques for
Big Data processing, including Spark Streaming, Kafka and Hadoop Distributed
Filesystem (HDFS). Also, a Web User Interface is designed in the system, to
collect users' degrees of satisfaction on the recognition tasks so as to
evaluate the performance of the whole system. Furthermore, the highly
extensible platform running on the long-term surveillance videos makes it
possible to develop more intelligent incremental algorithms to enhance the

Carbon Property Rights in Soil
The commodification of soil to permit carbon sequestration and hence trading in the resultant carbon rights is examined as an emerging facet of climate change management. As the developed world moves towards carbon offsets and decarbonisation, the Australian continent provides a capacity to be a land based repository of carbon in either select species of vegetation grown specifically for this purpose, or where soil is conserved to sequestrate carbon. A presumption exists that carbon is sequestrated differentially in various soil landscapes, which typically comprise a mixture of different soil types. Penalty Methods for the Hyperbolic System Modelling the Wall-Plasma Interaction in a Tokamak
The penalization method is used to take account of obstacles in a tokamak,
such as the limiter. We study a non linear hyperbolic system modelling the
plasma transport in the area close to the wall. A penalization which cuts the
transport term of the momentum is studied. We show numerically that this
penalization creates a Dirac measure at the plasma-limiter interface which
prevents us from defining the transport term in the usual sense. Hence, a new
penalty method is proposed for this hyperbolic system and numerical tests

New-Onset Psychosis in a Multi-Drug Resistant Tuberculosis Patient on Cycloserine in Calabar, Nigeria: A Case Report
Drug-resistant tuberculosis poses a serious challenge to global control of TB. These forms of TB do not respond to the standard six-month treatment; it can take two years or more to treat with category IV drugs that are less potent, more toxic and much more expensive. Treatment of multi-drug resistant tuberculosis is still evolving in Nigeria. This case report highlights the side effects of cycloserine used to treat a multi-drug resistant tuberculosis patient in Calabar. Five days into therapy, he became disoriented, abusive and physically aggressive. He also displayed negativisim with paranoid delusions and insomnia. He was managed by a psychiatrist with anti-psychotic drugs. The dose of cycloserine was also reduced while that of pyridoxine was increased. He remained in a state of periodic confusion and psychosis for nine days after which his condition ameliorated. It is imperative that clinicians involved in treating multi-drug resistant tuberculosis are conversant with the side effects of category IV drugs. Acute psychosis from cycloserine toxicity requires prompt intervention by trained medical personnel using the relevant psychotropic medications. Reduction in dosage or outright stoppage of cycloserine in such situations should be considered. Use of pyridoxine in large doses also appears to be beneficial.Keywords: Psychosis, Tuberculosis, Cycloserine, Multidrug resistance, Category IV drug
Comparison of cytokine and phosphoprotein profiles in idiopathic and Crohn's disease-related perianal fistula.
BACKGROUND: Perianal fistulae are either primary (idiopathic) or secondary [commonly associated with Crohn's disease, (CD)]. It is assumed, although not proven, that the pathophysiology differs. AIM: To systematically compare the clinical phenotypes, cytokine and phosphoprotein profiles of idiopathic and CD-related perianal fistulae. METHODS: Sixty-one patients undergoing surgery for perianal fistula were prospectively recruited (48 idiopathic, 13 CD) into a cohort study. Clinical data, including the Perineal Disease Activity Index (PDAI) and EQ-5D-5L were collected. Biopsies of the fistula tract, granulation tissue, internal opening mucosa and rectal mucosa were obtained at surgery. Concentrations of 30 cytokines and 39 phosphoproteins were measured in each biopsy using a magnetic bead multiplexing instrument and a chemiluminescent antibody array respectively. Over 12000 clinical and 23500 laboratory measurements were made. RESULTS: The PDAI was significantly higher (indicating more active disease) in the CD group with a mean difference of 2.40 (95%CI: 0.52-4.28, P = 0.01). Complex pathoanatomy was more prevalent in the CD group, namely more multiple fistulae, supralevator extensions, collections and rectal thickening. The IL-12p70 concentration at the internal opening specimen site was significantly higher (median difference 19.7 pg/mL, 99%CI: 0.2-40.4, P = 0.008) and the IL-1RA/IL-1β ratio was significantly lower in the CD group at the internal opening specimen site (median difference 15.0, 99%CI = 0.4-50.5, P = 0.008). However in the remaining 27 cytokines and all 39 of the phosphoproteins across the four biopsy sites, no significant differences were found between the groups. CONCLUSION: CD-related perianal fistulae are more clinically severe and anatomically complex than idiopathic perianal fistulae. However, overall there are no major differences in cytokine and phosphoprotein profiles
A 3D Face Modelling Approach for Pose-Invariant Face Recognition in a Human-Robot Environment
Face analysis techniques have become a crucial component of human-machine
interaction in the fields of assistive and humanoid robotics. However, the
variations in head-pose that arise naturally in these environments are still a
great challenge. In this paper, we present a real-time capable 3D face
modelling framework for 2D in-the-wild images that is applicable for robotics.
The fitting of the 3D Morphable Model is based exclusively on automatically
detected landmarks. After fitting, the face can be corrected in pose and
transformed back to a frontal 2D representation that is more suitable for face
recognition. We conduct face recognition experiments with non-frontal images
from the MUCT database and uncontrolled, in the wild images from the PaSC
database, the most challenging face recognition database to date, showing an
improved performance. Finally, we present our SCITOS G5 robot system, which
incorporates our framework as a means of image pre-processing for face
analysis
Van Allen Probes, THEMIS, GOES, and Cluster Observations of EMIC waves, ULF pulsations, and an electron flux dropout
We examined an electron flux dropout during the 12-14 November 2012 geomagnetic storm using observations from seven spacecraft: the two Van Allen Probes, Time History of Events and Macroscale Interactions during Substorms (THEMIS)-A (P5), Cluster 2, and Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellites (GOES) 13, 14, and 15. The electron fluxes for energies greater than 2.0 MeV observed by GOES 13, 14, and 15 at geosynchronous orbit and by the Van Allen Probes remained at or near instrumental background levels for more than 24 h from 12 to 14 November. For energies of 0.8 MeV, the GOES satellites observed two shorter intervals of reduced electron fluxes. The first interval of reduced 0.8 MeV electron fluxes on 12-13 November was associated with an interplanetary shock and a sudden impulse. Cluster, THEMIS, and GOES observed intense He+ electromagnetic ion cyclotron (EMIC) waves from just inside geosynchronous orbit out to the magnetopause across the dayside to the dusk flank. The second interval of reduced 0.8 MeV electron fluxes on 13-14 November was associated with a solar sector boundary crossing and development of a geomagnetic storm with Dst<100 nT. At the start of the recovery phase, both the 0.8 and 2.0 MeV electron fluxes finally returned to near prestorm values, possibly in response to strong ultralow frequency (ULF) waves observed by the Van Allen Probes near dawn. A combination of adiabatic effects, losses to the magnetopause, scattering by EMIC waves, and acceleration by ULF waves can explain the observed electron behavior
Refractive change following pseudophakic vitrectomy: a retrospective review
Background
To assess the occurrence and magnitude of refractive change in pseudophakic eyes undergoing 20 gauge pars plana vitrectomy without scleral buckling and to investigate possible aetiological factors.
Methods
Retrospective case note review of 87 pseudophakic eyes undergoing 20 gauge pars plana vitrectomy for a variety of vitreo-retinal conditions over a three-year period. Anterior chamber depth (ACD) was measured before and after vitrectomy surgery in 32 eyes. Forty-three pseudophakic fellow eyes were used as controls.
Results
Eighty-seven eyes (84 patients) were included in the study. Mean spherical equivalent refraction prior to vitrectomy was -0.20 dioptres, which changed to a mean of -0.65 dioptres postoperatively (standard deviation of refractive change 0.59, range-2.13 to 0.75 dioptres) (p < 0.001). Sixty-one of the 87(70%) eyes experienced a myopic shift and 45(52%) eyes had a myopic shift of -0.5 dioptres or more. Mean fellow eye refraction was -0.19 dioptres preoperatively and -0.17 dioptres postoperatively (p = 0.14)(n = 37) Mean ACD preoperatively was 3.29 mm and postoperatively 3.27 mm (p = 0.53) (n = 32) and there was no significant change in ACD with tamponade use. Regression analysis revealed no statistically significant association between changes in anterior chamber depth, as well as a wide variety of other pre-, intra and postoperative factors examined, and the refractive change observed.
Conclusion
Significant refractive changes occur in some pseudophakic patients undergoing 20 g pars plana vitrectomy. The mean change observed was a small myopic shift but the range was large. The aetiology of the refractive change is uncertain
Anomaly and a QCD-like phase diagram with massive bosonic baryons
We study a strongly coupled lattice gauge theory with two flavors of
quarks, invariant under an exact symmetry which is the same as QCD with
two flavors of quarks without an anomaly. The model also contains a coupling
that can be used to break the symmetry and thus mimic the QCD
anomaly. At low temperatures and small baryon chemical potential
the model contains massless pions and massive bosonic baryons similar to QCD
with an even number of colors. In this work we study the phase
diagram of the model and show that it contains three phases : (1) A chirally
broken phase at low and , (2) a chirally symmetric baryon superfluid
phase at low and high , and (3) a symmetric phase at high . We
find that the nature of the finite temperature chiral phase transition and in
particular the location of the tricritical point that seperates the first order
