    Clustering environment of BL Lac object RGB 1745+398

    The BL Lac object RGB 1745+398 lies in an environment that makes it possible to study the cluster around it more deeply than the environments of other BL Lac objects. The cluster centered on the BL Lac works as a strong gravitational lens, forming a large arc around itself. The aim of this paper is to study the environment and characteristics of this object more accurately than the environments of other BL Lac objects have been before.We measured the redshifts of galaxies in the cluster from the absorption lines in their spectra. The velocity dispersion was then obtained from the redshifts. The gravitational lensing was used for measuring the mass at the center of the cluster. The mass of the whole cluster could then be estimated using the softened isothermal sphere mass distribution. Finally, the richness of the cluster was determined by counting the number of galaxies near the BL Lac object and obtaining the galaxy-BL Lac spatial covariance function, BgbB_{gb}. The redshifts of nine galaxies in the field were measured to be near the redshift of the BL Lac object, confirming the presence of a cluster. The average redshift of the cluster is 0.268, and the velocity dispersion (470110+190)(470^{+190}_{-110}) km s1^{-1}. The mass of the cluster is M_{500}=(4^{+3}_{-2})\times10^{14} M_{\sun} which implies a rather massive cluster. The richness measurement also suggests that this is a rich cluster: the result for covariance function is Bgb=(600±200)B_{gb}=(600\pm200) Mpc1.77^{1.77}, which corresponds to Abell richness class 1 and which is consistent with the mass and velocity dispersion of the cluster.Comment: 5 pages, accepted to A&

    Eco-Friendly Impact of Vernonia amygdalina as Corrosion Inhibitor on Aluminium in Acidic Media

    Corrosion inhibition effect of Vernonia amygdalina extract on aluminium in 0.5 M HCl solution was studied using gravimetric method at 40 oC temperature. Aluminium coupons of dimension 3x1.5 cm were immersed in test solutions of uninhibited acid and those containing extract concentrations of 0.4, 0.5, 0.6, 0.7, 0.8, 0.9 and 1.0 g/L concentration at intervals of 30 minutes progressively for 150 minutes. The results revealed that V. amygdalina could be used as an ecofriendly corrosion inhibitor for aluminium in HCl solution. The corrosion inhibition efficiency of the extract increases with concentrations in the corrosion media. The surface coverage of the extract obeyed Langmuir adsorption isotherm. Hence,the corrosion inhibition effect of the extract was rationalized via adsorption mechanism

    Physicochemical Analysis,Phytochemical Screening and Antimicrobial Activities of some Vegetable Oil from Ogun State,Nigeria

    The study was carried out to assess the physicochemical properties, phytochemical screening and antimicrobial activities of twenty five different edible vegetable oil samples collected from Ota, Ogun state in Nigeria for their domestic and commercial applications. The moisture contents (0.02 – 0.13%), acid values (0.46 – 1.73 mg KOH/g), saponification values (226.19 – 310.19 mg KOH/g), iodine values (0.06 – 1.17 mg I2/g) and the low pH values (0.0 – 2.49) generally make these vegetable oils to be more useful in industrial applications than consumed directly or indirectly as ingredients in food. The results of the phytochemical screening of these oil samples indicated the presence of terpenoids, deoxysugar, steroids and cardenolides. The microbial sensitivity tests showed that most of the vegetable oil samples exhibited no inhibitory power against candida, Klebsiella pneumonia, Escherichia coli but only sample 25 (soya bean oil) was sensitive to these three microbes and its inhibition of these microbes was concentration dependent. The mineral contents of these oils showed detectable levels of Zn (2.57 – 21.43 ppm), Mn (0.12 – 0.98 ppm), Fe (2.21 – 97.41 ppm), Cu (0.49 – 61.70 ppm), Cd (0.42 – 0.74 ppm) and Pb (0.14 – 31.09 ppm) which were found to be above the WHO permissible limits for these metals in drinking water

    Effect of Reactor Temperature on Pyrolysis of Lignocellulosic Medical Waste in a Fixed Bed Reactor

    The lethargic modes of medical waste disposal in many developing countries have been a cause of concern to many regulatory agencies. In this study, effect of reactor temperature on pyrolysis of lignocellulosic medical waste in a fixed bed reactor was investigated. Gauze bandage was procured from AKOL Pharmacy, Ogbomoso, South-Western Nigeria. Samples of the gauze bandage, 40 g each at a time, were fed into a retort and the retort inserted into a developed fixed bed reactor for pyrolysis at different temperatures (300, 400, 500 and 600 oC) with a residence time of 15 minutes. Tar, gas and char yields were weighed using an electronic balance (WT20002T, RS232C) and were further expressed in percentage of the initial weight of the sample. Results showed that tar and gas yields increased with increasing reactor temperature while char yield decreased with it. Both intraand extra-particle secondary reactions were insignificant and therefore could not influence the yield spectra of products. The highest yield of tar, gas and char were 52.08, 28.42 and 52.7%, respectively while the lowest yield were respectively 30.50, 16.80 and 19.50%. Lignocellulosic medical waste can be a viable source of biofuels and raw materials respectively for sustainable development and for chemical industries

    1ES 0229+200: An extreme blazar with a very high minimum Lorentz factor

    The blazar 1ES 0229+200 is a high frequency peaked BL Lac object with a hard TeV spectrum extending to 10 TeV. Its unusual spectral characteristics make it a frequently used probe for intergalactic radiation and magnetic fields. With new, simultaneous observations in the optical, ultraviolet (UV) and X-rays, the synchrotron emission is probed in great detail. The X-ray emission varies by a factor of ~2 in 2009, while being rather stable in 2010. The X-ray spectrum is very hard (\Gamma ~ 1.8) and it shows an indication of excess absorption above the Galactic value. The X-ray emission is detected up to ~100 keV without any significant cut-off, thus 1ES 0229+200 belongs to the class of extreme blazars. The simultaneous measured, host galaxy- and extinction-corrected optical and UV fluxes illustrate that the cut-off of the low energy part of the synchrotron emission is located in the UV regime. The minimum energy of the electron distribution has to be rather high to account for this cut-off. This implies that there is a narrow-band energy distribution function of radiating electrons, which is responsible for the unusually hard TeV spectrum. Other extreme blazars have similar synchrotron peak frequencies but much softer TeV spectra, hence 1ES 0229+200 has one of the highest inverse Compton (IC) peak frequency and the narrowest electron distribution among the extreme blazars known to date.Comment: accepted for publication in Astronomy&Astrophysic

    The estimation of black-hole masses in distant radio galaxies

    We have estimated the masses of the central supermassive black holes of 2442 radio galaxies froma catalog compiled using data from the NED, SDSS, and CATS databases. Mass estimates based on optical photometry and radio data are compared. Relationships between the mass of the central black hole MpbhM_p^{bh} and the redshift zpz_p are constructed for both wavelength ranges. The distribution of the galaxies in these diagrams and systematic effects influencing estimation of the black-hole parameters are discussed. Upperenvelope cubic regression fits are obtained using the maximum estimates of the black-hole masses. The optical and radio upper envelopes show similar behavior, and have very similar peaks in position, zp1.9z_p \simeq 1.9, and amplitude, logMpbh\log M_p^{bh} = 9.4. This is consistent with a model in which the growth of the supermassive black holes is self-regulating, with this redshift corresponding to the epoch when the accretion-flow phase begins to end and the nuclear activity falls off.Comment: 8 pages, 6 figure

    Supermassive Black Holes in Galactic Nuclei: Past, Present and Future Research

    This review discusses the current status of supermassive black hole research, as seen from a purely observational standpoint. Since the early '90s, rapid technological advances, most notably the launch of the Hubble Space Telescope, the commissioning of the VLBA and improvements in near-infrared speckle imaging techniques, have not only given us incontrovertible proof of the existence of supermassive black holes, but have unveiled fundamental connections between the mass of the central singularity and the global properties of the host galaxy. It is thanks to these observations that we are now, for the first time, in a position to understand the origin, evolution and cosmic relevance of these fascinating objects.Comment: Invited Review, 114 pages.     Simultaneous multi-frequency observation of the unknown redshift blazar PG 1553+113 in March-April 2008

    The blazar PG 1553+113 is a well known TeV gamma-ray emitter. In this paper, we determine its spectral energy distribution using simultaneous multi-frequency data in order to study its emission processes. An extensive campaign was carried out between March and April 2008, where optical, X-ray, high-energy (HE) gamma-ray, and very-high-energy (VHE) gamma-ray data were obtained with the KVA, Abastumani, REM, RossiXTE/ASM, AGILE and MAGIC telescopes, respectively. This is the first simultaneous broad-band (i.e., HE+VHE) gamma-ray observation, though AGILE did not detect the source.     Spectral Components of SS 433

    We present results from new optical and UV spectroscopy of the unusual binary system SS 433, and we discuss the relationship of the particular spectral components we observe to the properties of the binary. (1) The continuum spectrum which we associate with flux from the super-Eddington accretion disk and the dense part of its wind. (2) H-alpha moving components which are formed far from the binary orbital plane in the relativistic jets. (3) H-alpha and He I "stationary" emission lines which we suggest are formed in the disk wind in a volume larger than the dimensions of the binary. (4) A weak "stationary" emission feature we identify as a C II 7231,7236 blend that attains maximum radial velocity at the orbital quadrature of disk recession. (5) Absorption and emission features from outflowing clumps in the disk wind (seen most clearly in an episode of blue-shifted Na I emission). (6) We found no clear evidence of the absorption line spectrum of the optical star, although we point out the presence of He I absorption features (blended with the stationary emission) with the expected radial velocity trend at the orbital and precessional phases when the star might best be seen. (7) A rich interstellar absorption spectrum of diffuse interstellar bands. The results suggest that the binary is embedded in an expanding thick disk (detected in recent radio observations) which is fed by the wind from the super-Eddington accretion disk.Comment: Submitted to Ap
