Magnetic remanent states in antiferromagnetically coupled multilayers
In antiferromagnetically coupled multilayers with perpendicular anisotropy
unusual multidomain textures can be stabilized due to a close competition
between long-range demagnetization fields and short-range interlayer exchange
coupling.
In particular, the formation and evolution of specific topologically stable
planar defects within the antiferromagnetic ground state, i.e. wall-like
structures with a ferromagnetic configuration extended over a finite width,
explain configurational hysteresis phenomena recently observed in
[Co/Pt(Pd)]/Ru and [Co/Pt]/NiO multilayers.
Within a phenomenological theory, we have analytically derived the
equilibrium sizes of these "ferroband" defects as functions of the
antiferromagnetic exchange, a bias magnetic field, and geometrical parameters
of the multilayers. In the magnetic phase diagram, the existence region of the
ferrobands mediates between the regions of patterns with sharp
antiferromagnetic domain walls and regular arrays of ferromagnetic stripes.
The theoretical results are supported by magnetic force microscopy images of

Studies of aging and HV break down problems during development and operation of MSGC and GEM detectors for the Inner Tracking System of HERA-B
The results of five years of development of the inner tracking system of the
HERA-B experiment and first experience from the data taking period of the year
2000 are reported. The system contains 184 chambers, covering a sensitive area
of about 20 * 20 cm2 each. The detector is based on microstrip gas counters
(MSGCs) with diamond like coated (DLC) glass wafers and gas electron
multipliers (GEMs). The main problems in the development phase were gas
discharges in intense hadron beams and aging in a high radiation dose
environment. The observation of gas discharges which damage the electrode
structure of the MSGC led to the addition of the GEM as a first amplification
step. Spurious sparking at the GEM cannot be avoided completely. It does not
affect the GEM itself but can produce secondary damage of the MSGC if the
electric field between the GEM and the MSGC is above a threshold depending on
operation conditions. We observed that aging does not only depend on the dose
but also on the spot size of the irradiated area. Ar-DME mixtures had to be
abandoned whereas a mixture of 70% Ar and 30% CO2 showed no serious aging
effects up to about 40 mC/cm deposited charge on the anodes. X-ray measurements
indicate that the DLC of the MSGC is deteriorated by the gas amplification
process. As a consequence, long term gain variations are expected. The Inner
Tracker has successfully participated in the data taking at HERA-B during

Timelike surfaces in Lorentz covariant loop gravity and spin foam models
We construct a canonical formulation of general relativity for the case of a
timelike foliation of spacetime. The formulation possesses explicit covariance
with respect to Lorentz transformations in the tangent space. Applying the loop
approach to quantize the theory we derive the spectrum of the area operator of
a two-dimensional surface. Its different branches are naturally associated to
spacelike and timelike surfaces. The results are compared with the predictions
of Lorentzian spin foam models. A restriction of the representations labeling
spin networks leads to perfect agreement between the states as well as the area

ARTEFACTS: How do we want to deal with the future of our one and only planet?
The European Commission’s Science and Knowledge Service, the Joint Research Centre (JRC), decided to try working hand-in-hand with leading European science centres and museums.
Behind this decision was the idea that the JRC could better support EU Institutions in engaging with the European public. The fact that European Union policies are firmly based on scientific evidence is a strong message which the JRC is uniquely able to illustrate. Such a collaboration would not only provide a platform to explain the benefits of EU policies to our daily lives but also provide an opportunity for European citizens to engage by taking a more active part in the EU policy making process for the future.
A PILOT PROGRAMME
To test the idea, the JRC launched an experimental programme to work with science museums: a perfect partner for three compelling reasons. Firstly, they attract a large and growing number of visitors. Leading science museums in Europe have typically 500 000 visitors per year. Furthermore, they are based in large European cities and attract local visitors as well as tourists from across Europe and beyond.
The second reason for working with museums is that they have mastered the art of how to communicate key elements of sophisticated arguments across to the public and making complex topics of public interest readily accessible. That is a high-value added skill and a crucial part of the valorisation of public-funded research, never to be underestimated.
Finally museums are, at present, undergoing something of a renaissance. Museums today are vibrant environments offering new techniques and technologies to both inform and entertain, and attract visitors of all demographics.JRC.H.2-Knowledge Management Methodologies, Communities and Disseminatio

Pharmacokinetics, tolerance and serum thromboxane inhibition of carprofen in the dog
The non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) carprofen was administered to dogs as a mixed-micelle solution at a dose rate of 0–7 mg/kg intravenously, as a palatable paste at a dose rate of 0–7 mg/kg orally, and as an oral tablet formulation at a dose rate of 0–7 mg/kg and 4-0 mg/kg orally for pharmacokinetic studies. It was also administered as an oral tablet formulation at a dose rate of 9-0 mg/kg orally daily for 14 days in a tolerance study. The pharmacokinetics following intravenous administration at a dose rate of 0–7 mg/kg indicate that carprofen has a small volume of distribution (Vd area = 0–09-0-25 litres), a slow systemic clearance (Cls = 1–34-5-57 ml/min) and an elimination half-life of 3–20-11-77 hours. Both oral paste and tablet preparations were highly bioavailable and absorption was proportional to dose rate at 0–7 mg/kg and 4-0 mg/kg bodyweight. Given once daily at dose rates likely to be used clinically it is unlikely to accumulate in the plasma. Carprofen administered as a palatable paste at a dose rate of 0–7 mg/kg did not inhibit serum thromboxane generation and this drug may therefore have a mode of action different from most NSAIDs.
