Weld geometry strength effect in 2219-T87 aluminum

A theory of the effect of geometry on the mechanical properties of a butt weld joint is worked out based upon the soft interlayer weld model. Tensile tests of 45 TIG butt welds and 6 EB beads-on-plate in 1/4-in. 2219-T87 aluminum plate made under a wide range of heat sink and power input conditions are analyzed using this theory. The analysis indicates that purely geometrical effects dominate in determining variations in weld joint strength with heat sink and power input. Variations in weld dimensions with cooling rate are significant as well as with power input. Weld size is suggested as a better indicator of the condition of a weld joint than energy input

Stochastic Feedback and the Regulation of Biological Rhythms

We propose a general approach to the question of how biological rhythms spontaneously self-regulate, based on the concept of ``stochastic feedback''. We illustrate this approach by considering the neuroautonomic regulation of the heart rate. The model generates complex dynamics and successfully accounts for key characteristics of cardiac variability, including the $1/f$ power spectrum, the functional form and scaling of the distribution of variations, and correlations in the Fourier phases. Our results suggest that in healthy systems the control mechanisms operate to drive the system away from extreme values while not allowing it to settle down to a constant output.Comment: 15 pages, latex2e using rotate and epsf, with 4 ps figures. Investigação de regiões cromossômicas candidatas para associação com a deposição de gordura em bovinos da raça Canchim.

Este trabalho teve o objetivo de investigar a associação entre os marcadores BMS490, ETH10 do cromossomo 5; INRA133, ILSTS090 do cromossomo 6 e RM222, BMS2142 do cromossomo 19 de bovinos e a característica espessura de gordura subcutânea (EGS) na raça Canchim. Foi estudada uma amostra de 392 animais, composto por dois grupos genéticos: Canchim (5/8 Charolês + 3/8 Zebu) e MA, criados em regime de pasto na Embrapa Pecuária Sudeste, em São Carlos -SP, e na Fazenda Ipameri, em Jussara -GO. O DNA foi extraído de amostras de sangue pelo método de precipitação das proteínas com sal como descrito por Regitano (2001). Os microssatélites foram amplificados por reação em cadeia da polimerase (PCR) e analisados no equipamento ABI 3100 Avant (Applied Biosystems). As análises de variância foram realizadas usando o método de quadrados mínimos, com modelo estatístico que incluiu os efeitos de sexo, grupos genéticos; fazenda, mês e ano de nascimento, manejo adotado e genótipo do marcador. Apesar dos marcadores terem sido escolhidos para delimitar regiões associadas à deposição de gordura em outras populações de bovinos de corte, não foram encontrados efeitos significativos dos marcadores em relação à EGS, na população da raça Canchim estudada

Phase lag in epidemics on a network of cities

We study the synchronisation and phase-lag of fluctuations in the number of infected individuals in a network of cities between which individuals commute. The frequency and amplitude of these oscillations is known to be very well captured by the van Kampen system-size expansion, and we use this approximation to compute the complex coherence function that describes their correlation. We find that, if the infection rate differs from city to city and the coupling between them is not too strong, these oscillations are synchronised with a well defined phase lag between cities. The analytic description of the effect is shown to be in good agreement with the results of stochastic simulations for realistic population sizes.Comment: 10 pages, 6 figure
