Systems and methods for physiological signal enhancement and biometric extraction using non-invasive optical sensors
A system and method for signal processing to remove unwanted noise components including: (i) wavelength-independent motion artifacts such as tissue, bone and skin effects, and (ii) wavelength-dependent motion artifact/noise components such as venous blood pulsation and movement due to various sources including muscle pump, respiratory pump and physical perturbation. Disclosed are methods, analytics, and their uses for reliable perfusion monitoring, arterial oxygen saturation monitoring, heart rate monitoring during daily activities and in hospital settings and for extraction of physiological parameters such as respiration information, hemodynamic parameters, venous capacity, and fluid responsiveness. The system and methods disclosed are extendable to include monitoring platforms for perfusion, hypoxia, arrhythmia detection, airway obstruction detection and sleep disorders including apnea.Board of Regents, University of Texas Syste

Methods and systems for extracting venous pulsation and respiratory information from photoplethysmographs
A system and method for separating a venous component and an arterial component from a red signal and an infrared signal of a PPG sensor is provided. The method uses the second order statistics of venous and arterial signals to separate the venous andarterial signals. After reliable separation of the venous and thearterial component signals, the component signals can be used for different purposes. In a preferred embodiment, the respiratory signal, pattern, and rate are extracted from the separated venous component and a reliable ?ratio of ratios? is extracted for SpO, using only the arterial component of the PPG signals. The disclosed embodiments enable real-time continuous monitoring of respiration pattern/rate and site-independentarterial oxygen saturation.Board of Regents, University of Texas Syste
Statecharts for Gene Network Modeling
State diagrams (stategraphs) are suitable for describing the behavior of dynamic systems. However, when they are used to model large and complex systems, determining the states and transitions among them can be overwhelming, due to their flat, unstratified structure. In this article, we present the use of statecharts as a novel way of modeling complex gene networks. Statecharts extend conventional state diagrams with features such as nested hierarchy, recursion, and concurrency. These features are commonly utilized in engineering for designing complex systems and can enable us to model complex gene networks in an efficient and systematic way. We modeled five key gene network motifs, simple regulation, autoregulation, feed-forward loop, single-input module, and dense overlapping regulon, using statecharts. Specifically, utilizing nested hierarchy and recursion, we were able to model a complex interlocked feed-forward loop network in a highly structured way, demonstrating the potential of our approach for modeling large and complex gene networks
Single and multi-subject clustering of flow cytometry data for cell-type identification and anomaly detection
BACKGROUND: Measurement of various markers of single cells using flow cytometry has several biological applications. These applications include improving our understanding of behavior of cellular systems, identifying rare cell populations and personalized medication. A common critical issue in the existing methods is identification of the number of cellular populations which heavily affects the accuracy of results. Furthermore, anomaly detection is crucial in flow cytometry experiments. In this work, we propose a two-stage clustering technique for cell type identification in single subject flow cytometry data and extend it for anomaly detection among multiple subjects. RESULTS: Our experimentation on 42 flow cytometry datasets indicates high performance and accurate clustering (F-measure > 91 %) in identifying main cellular populations. Furthermore, our anomaly detection technique evaluated on Acute Myeloid Leukemia dataset results in only <2 % false positives
