Sustainable Manufacturing Practice And Sustainability Performance Mediated By Innovation Performance

    Get PDF
Sustainable manufacturing (SM) strategies have drawn attention derived from increasing global concerns on sustainability issues such as the scarcity of natural resources, rapid environmental destruction and unequal balance of social equities. The concept of sustainability has dramatically extended the goals of businesses, traditionally solely focused on operational efficiency and economic returns, to include environmental and social benefits. Embracing the idea of the triple bottom line approach, firm performance is assessed based on three criteria namely economic, environmental and social sustainability. The importance of environmental management and socially responsible practices for enhancing sustainability performance (SP) at a firm level has been widely acknowledged and extensively reported in the extant literature. While some researchers found a positive and significant impact of sustainable manufacturing practice (SMP) on predicting SP, there were some other researchers who failed to prove the significant relationship between these two variables. The inconsistent result of SMP-SP linkage might be due to the reason that the contextual elements of SMP and SP have not been well established. Insufficient statistical evidence to corroborate the significant impact of SMP on SP demonstrates that there may be a more complex relationship between SMP and SP. Since the significant relationship of innovation performance (IP) with SMP and SP has been found in some previous studies, there is a possibility that IP mediate the SMP-SP linkage. The objectives of this study are to identify the level of SMP, SP and IP among Malaysian manufacturing firms, to analyze the direct and indirect effect of SMP on SP, and eventually to propose a validated framework indicating the interrelationships between SMP, SP and IP. Using the theories of stakeholder and resource-based view (RBV) of a firm, integrating with prior research on sustainability, SM and innovation, a theoretical model depicting the interrelationships between SMP, IP and SP has been developed in this study. A series of hypothesized relationships were tested through PLS-SEM approach by using survey data collected from 150 firms. The results reveal that internal SMP has a positive and significant impact on economic sustainability, and both types of SMP (internal SMP and external SMP) have significant impact on environmental and social sustainability. While both types of SMP have mediated effect on social sustainability through organizational innovation, process innovation is the single significant mediator for internal SMP-economic sustainability linkage and both product and process innovations are the significant mediators for external SMP-economic sustainability linkage. The study indicates that the level of implementation of SMP is moderate to considerable extent, and economic benefits are still the dominant factors on embracing SMP compared to the others. The results also demonstrate that Malaysian manufacturers are able to gain better IP, reflecting that increasing innovation capabilities might be of high importance to the firms. While offering significant theoretical contribution by enhancing the SM, innovation and sustainability body of knowledge, the findings of this study are beneficial for industrial practitioners through better understanding of the contextual elements of SMP, IP and SP which would support their continuous improvement

International Tourism Demand and Economic Growth in Malaysia

Being one of the more open economic sectors scrutinised by world media, the tourism industry has emerged as an important industry in Malaysia. At present, the industry is the country's third largest foreign exchange earner. The contribution of tourism industry to the economy depends on the level of demand for tourism related activities or tourism services by foreign and domestic tourists. However, the flow of foreign tourists to a particular country is believed to be dynamically unstable due to its sensitivity to various socioeconomic, socio-political, socio-cultural, and geographical factors. This thesis has identified several socioeconomic factors that may significantly affect tourist arrival from ASEAN and non-ASEAN countries to Malaysia. In addition, this study also investigated the presence of short-run and long-run relationships between tourism demand and factors influencing tourism demand. Additionally, the causal relationship between international tourism receipts and real economic growth in Malaysia was also explored. In order to address these objectives, the study used the panel data econometric fixed-/random-effects model in determining the major factors influencing tourist arrival from ASEAN and non-ASEAN countries in Malaysia based on a sample period from 1994 to 2004. Cointegration test and error-correction model were employed in investigating the presence of short-run and long-run relationships between tourism demand and its determinants. In addition, both time-series and panel causality tests were used in determining the causal relationship between international tourism receipts and real economic growth. Results indicated that income of tourist country of origin; the relative price of tourism in Malaysia; lagged prices; the prices of tourism in complementary destinations (for Singapore and Indonesia); the prices of tourism in substitute destinations (for Thailand and the Philippines); the word-of-mouth effect; the Malaysia ... Truly Asia global campaign; and the spread of the SARS in Asia are significant in determining the demand for tourism in Malaysia. In addition, the results of cointegration test and error-correction model revealed the presence of short-run and long-run relationships between tourism demand and its determinants. Moreover, the causality test results indicated that there is a strong relationship between international tourism receipts and real economic growth, which supports the hypothesis that the tourism industry is a significant contributor to the economic growth of Malaysia. The results of the study had revealed several policy implications. Firstly, Malaysia needs to maintain its price competitiveness in order to attract more tourist arrivals. Secondly, in order to continue promoting Malaysia as a preferred tourist destination in this region, Malaysia should continue to facilitate global and regional strategic alliances and smart partnerships among governments, tourist organisations and the industries, especially with Singapore and Indonesia, which were found to be complementary destinations for Malaysia. Besides, the private sector should also be encouraged to develop innovative tourism products and services to meet the demand of different market segments as well as develop potential niche markets. Thirdly, Malaysia's image as an attractive tourist destination should be further internationalised through marketing and promotion activities. Fourthly, Malaysia should step up security patrols, particularly in remote tourist resorts, to ensure the safety of tourists. Lastly, the public sector should supplement private sector efforts and concentrate on the upgrading and maintenance of existing facilities that supports the tourism sector

Rotation Curve with MOND and Dark Matter Halo profile for ESO138-G014

This paper is devoted to solve the galactic rotation problem for ESO138-G014 galaxy based on two theories: dark matter and Modified Newtonian Dynamics. Here we did the rotation curve analysis with two possible choices for the dark matter density profile, namely Burkert and Navarro, Frenk and White profiles. The analysis shows the dark matter distribution favored to Burkert profile (cored dark matter). The standard hypothesis for most spiral galaxies are known to be embedded in dark matter haloes has now been overshadowed by Modified Newtonian Dynamics, known as MOND, the leading alternative of dark matter. MOND addresses the problem of a new fundamental constant a0a_0, called the acceleration constant, at which acceleration scale of Newton second law fails to hold. In this respect, we investigate this issue by testing the rotation curve within the MOND framework with the observations to obtain the reliable disk mass, MDM_D. We investigate whether ESO138-G014 is compatible with MOND or dark matter is still favorable for the galactic rotation problem.Comment: 6 pages, 2 tables, 9 figure
