La falsificazione epigrafica. Questioni di metodo e casi di studio

This paper aims to reconsider the manuscript by Jacopo Valvasone (1499-1570), formerly owned by the Earl of Leicester (now British Library, Additional MS 49369), which Theodor Mommsen borrowed and inspected in 1876, just before the publication of the second part of CIL V. In the letter that he wrote to thank the Vicar and Librarian of Halkham Hall, Mommsen declared that Valvasone joined \u201cthe the long list of forgers\u201d. The analysis of forgeries in Valvasone\u2019s manuscript could show whether Mommsen was right in his opinion

The edition reproduces the autograph manuscript of 'Il mio Carso' (Archivio di Stato di Trieste) and constitutes a step toward a critical edition of the work that needs to take into account the material drafting of sketches. The text represents a drafting unit of the work rather close to the original. Preceded by a presentation that describes the manuscript and its history, it is accompanied by an apparatus in three bands: the first gathers the characteristics of the manuscripts and the interventions by other hands (including some notes by the wife Gigetta), the second records genetic variants, the third compares text with the edition of "La Voce" (1912). Genetic variants provide positive indications to exegetical work and to interpretation

In the light of the debate on the issue of drafting of 'De vero bono' (G. Mancini, R. Sabbadini, G. Radetti), after exeptions to editorial solution proposed in 1970 by M. De Panizza Lorch (C. Goffis, M. Courteous, and others) and as a result of a new, important, witness (M. Cortesi, 1986), the contribution deals with some problems in estabishing the tradition of text. It focuses on showing the manipulative nature of the text of a printed edition (Cratander 1519), through examination of text and inquiry in activities of the printer-publisher Cratander
