    Recognition of emotional facial expressions in Alexithymia

    Alexithymia is a personality trait which is associated with difficulties in identifying and verbalizing emotions. Previous studies have shown a significant association between alexithymia and a lack of ability to decode emotional facial expressions. Three groups of university students (N = 1645) were formed by splitting the sample based on Toronto Alexithymia Scale (TAS-20) scores. All participants performed an emotional expression recognition task, using the "Reading the Mind in the Eyes'" method. The experimenter presented images of the eye-region of the faces of actors and actresses. As expected, results showed that alexithymics performed worse on ability to infer others' emotional states expressed by the eyes. These results suggest that alexithymia is associated with impaired emotion recognition, that is most apparent when processing capacity is restricted, high-alexithymic individuals could develop less detailed perceptual representations of facial expression which might impair the process of drawing conclusions about its emotional significance

    Histopathological Characteristics of Folliculo-stellate Cells in Pituitary Glands of Wild Type, Obese and High-fat Diet Induced Mice

    The anterior pituitary gland regulates growth, metabolism, and reproductionby secreting hormones. Folliculo-stellate cells (FSC) are non-endocrinecells located among hormone-producing cells in the anterior pituitaryglands, but little is known about the exact roles of those cells. Although,with their net organization, they seem to have an important role in thehormonal cells regulation and maintenance. In this work, the first ever made in this area, 33 pituitaries of three groupsof mice (18 wild type [WT], 11 genetically obese [OB] and 4 under a highfat diet [HFD]) were studied in order to determine if there was any relationbetween the number of FSC and alterations of the basal metabolism in eachgroup of mice. For that, immunohistochemical staining using the S-100protein was used and also the Image-J software, to calculate the percentageof FSC present in each sample. The authors found that, although there wasn’t any significant differencebetween WT and OB mice, the group of HFD mice tend to havesubstantially higher percentage of FSC than the mice from other groups.This might suggest some yet unknown link between diet, precisely with ahigh-fat diet, and the presentation of FSC in the anterior pituitary

    Incendiary Leptin

    Leptin is a hormone released by adipose tissue that plays a key role in the control of energy homeostasis through its binding to leptin receptors (LepR), mainly expressed in the hypothalamus. Most scientific evidence points to leptin’s satiating effect being due to its dual capacity to promote the expression of anorexigenic neuropeptides and to reduce orexigenic expression in the hypothalamus. However, it has also been demonstrated that leptin can stimulate (i) thermogenesis in brown adipose tissue (BAT) and (ii) the browning of white adipose tissue (WAT). Since the demonstration of the importance of BAT in humans 10 years ago, its study has aroused great interest, mainly in the improvement of obesity-associated metabolic disorders through the induction of thermogenesis. Consequently, several strategies targeting BAT activation (mainly in rodent models) have demonstrated great potential to improve hyperlipidemias, hepatic steatosis, insulin resistance and weight gain, leading to an overall healthier metabolic profile. Here, we review the potential therapeutic ability of leptin to correct obesity and other metabolic disorders, not only through its satiating effect, but by also utilizing its thermogenic properties

    Análisis de impacto de la crisis económica sobre el síndrome de Burnout y resiliencia en el personal de enfermería

    This research project aims to analyze the conditions of work, the individual variables and health are related to the development of burnout syndrome, as well as the potential effect of "hardness" or "resistant personality", present in our field of work, all this in the context of economic crisis in which we find ourselves today. Based on this analysis, strategies for change in order to improve job satisfaction and lower levels of work wear, acting on the factors that most influence on it could pose. It is an observational, descriptive, transversal, study in a sample of 377 nursing professionals and auxiliary nurses specialized care and attention health public system socio-health of the city of Albacete. Subjects will be selected randomly according to availability in service/work unit. The prevalence of burnout syndrome is superior to its pre-crisis being the emotional exhaustion the more influential in his appearance dimension. There are certain factors that predispose to the increase of burnout and others that are risk factors for its development. At the same time the resistant personality acts as a protective factor in the emergence of the syndrome. Future lines of research could be aimed at the study of interventions for the promotion of resilience.Este proyecto de  investigación pretende analizar las condiciones de trabajo, las variables individuales y de salud que están relacionadas con el desarrollo del síndrome de burnout, así como el potencial efecto de la “entereza” o “personalidad resistente”,  presente en nuestro ámbito de trabajo, todo esto en el contexto de crisis económica en la que nos encontramos en la actualidad. Partiendo de este análisis, se podrían plantear estrategias de cambio con el fin de mejorar la satisfacción laboral y disminuir los niveles de desgaste laboral, actuando sobre los factores que más incidan sobre el mismo. Se trata de un estudio observacional, descriptivo, transversal, realizado en una muestra de  377 profesionales de enfermería y auxiliares de enfermería, de Atención Especializada y Atención Sociosanitaria del Sistema Sanitario Público de la ciudad de Albacete. Los sujetos se seleccionarán de forma no aleatoria según disponibilidad en servicio/unidad de trabajo.La prevalencia del síndrome de burnout es superior al periodo precrisis siendo el cansancio emocional la dimensión más influyente en su aparición. Existen ciertos factores que predisponen al aumento del burnout y otros que son factores de riesgo para su desarrollo. A su vez la personalidad resistente actúa como factor protector en la aparición del síndrome. Futuras líneas de investigación podrían estar encaminadas al estudio de intervenciones para el fomento de la resilencia

    Growing up in the deep-sea protected development in deep-sea invertebrates: A case study in the southwestern Atlantic Ocean

    Marine invertebrates display a range of reproductive strategies, from external fertilization to several methods to protect the young. Both brooding or protected development of benthic species and direct development species (when juveniles born in a smaller version of its adult form) involves reducing the time that the larvae and/or juveniles spend in the plankton. The different forms of juvenile protection are often associated with the taxonomic group, although certain groups are much diversified in terms of their reproductive modes. However, the area where the species live also seems to play a key role. Several authors have indicated the unusual proportion of brooding species in the Southern Ocean, in particular in the southwestern Atlantic, including its adjacent deep-sea. The knowledge about the reproductive characteristics of most of the fauna in this area remains unknown. Proof of this are the great number of studies carried out in recent years, describing the reproductive features of several species (many also new), with some of them having many peculiarities about their biology.Fil: Teso, Silvia Valeria.     Transdisciplinary studies in socio-ecosystems: Theoretical considerations and its application in Latin American contexts

    Debido a limitaciones para abordar la complejidad de la relación sociedad-naturaleza, los esfuerzos para solucionar los problemas ambientales han sido en general infructuosos. Aquí proponemos que el enfoque holístico de “socio-ecosistema” por parte de la academia, podría contribuir a disminuir estas limitaciones desde la adopción de cuatro cambios: i) ontológico, que presenta el concepto de “socio-ecosistemas”; ii) epistemológico, que propone a la transdisciplina como la forma de entenderlos, iii) metodológico, que sugiere intervenir en ellos de forma participativa y adaptativa y, iv) cambios institucionales que facilitarían la adopción de esta propuesta. Este planteamiento se complementa con la descripción de una experiencia transdiciplinaria en la cuenca del río San Juan Zitácuaro, México, en el contexto de un curso internacional de manejo de socio-ecosistemas.Given the difficulties to approach the complex relationship bettween society and nature, efforts to solve environmental problems have generally been unsuccessful. Here we suggest that a hollistic “socio-ecosystem” approach by the sciencies could help diminish these difficulties by embracing four kinds of changes: i) ontological, which introduces the concept of “socio-ecosystem”; ii) epistemological, which proposes transdiscipline as the way to understand them, iii) metholodogical, which suggests that in intervention in them must be participatory and adaptive, iv) institutional changes that would facilitate the adoption of this approach.     Measurement of the cosmic ray spectrum above 4×10184{\times}10^{18} eV using inclined events detected with the Pierre Auger Observatory

    A measurement of the cosmic-ray spectrum for energies exceeding 4×10184{\times}10^{18} eV is presented, which is based on the analysis of showers with zenith angles greater than 6060^{\circ} detected with the Pierre Auger Observatory between 1 January 2004 and 31 December 2013. The measured spectrum confirms a flux suppression at the highest energies. Above 5.3×10185.3{\times}10^{18} eV, the "ankle", the flux can be described by a power law EγE^{-\gamma} with index γ=2.70±0.02(stat)±0.1(sys)\gamma=2.70 \pm 0.02 \,\text{(stat)} \pm 0.1\,\text{(sys)} followed by a smooth suppression region. For the energy (EsE_\text{s}) at which the spectral flux has fallen to one-half of its extrapolated value in the absence of suppression, we find Es=(5.12±0.25(stat)1.2+1.0(sys))×1019E_\text{s}=(5.12\pm0.25\,\text{(stat)}^{+1.0}_{-1.2}\,\text{(sys)}){\times}10^{19} eV.Comment: Replaced with published version.     Energy Estimation of Cosmic Rays with the Engineering Radio Array of the Pierre Auger Observatory

    The Auger Engineering Radio Array (AERA) is part of the Pierre Auger Observatory and is used to detect the radio emission of cosmic-ray air showers. These observations are compared to the data of the surface detector stations of the Observatory, which provide well-calibrated information on the cosmic-ray energies and arrival directions. The response of the radio stations in the 30 to 80 MHz regime has been thoroughly calibrated to enable the reconstruction of the incoming electric field. For the latter, the energy deposit per area is determined from the radio pulses at each observer position and is interpolated using a two-dimensional function that takes into account signal asymmetries due to interference between the geomagnetic and charge-excess emission components. The spatial integral over the signal distribution gives a direct measurement of the energy transferred from the primary cosmic ray into radio emission in the AERA frequency range. We measure 15.8 MeV of radiation energy for a 1 EeV air shower arriving perpendicularly to the geomagnetic field. This radiation energy -- corrected for geometrical effects -- is used as a cosmic-ray energy estimator. Performing an absolute energy calibration against the surface-detector information, we observe that this radio-energy estimator scales quadratically with the cosmic-ray energy as expected for coherent emission. We find an energy resolution of the radio reconstruction of 22% for the data set and 17% for a high-quality subset containing only events with at least five radio stations with signal.Comment: Replaced with published version.
