    The realm of the game geek : supporting creativity in an online community

    This paper explores the importance of online communities designed to support the creativity of tertiary students enrolled in Computer Science studies. Online discussion forums provide university students with a supportive and nurturing environment and a community where they can share knowledge and ideas. The authors draw on findings derived from a study of first year Computer Science students enrolled in a Games Design and Development unit. Of particular interest is the ways in which the participants develop and control the environment in order to enhance their own creative expression.<br /

    In this paper the authors explore the use and adaptation of a language specifically developed for, and by, a community of young people who play computer games. Leet speak or 1337 5p34k, the language used by the participants in this study, incorporates symbols and numbers as substitutes for the letters contained in words. Described by the group as an \u27elite\u27 language or \u27leet speak\u27, the authors\u27 interest was captured by the derisive and ironic use of the language in an online forum for a tertiary first year unit of study. Rather than merely defining its participants within an elite cultural boundary, \u27leet speak\u27 is utilised ironically to unearth \u27wannabees\u27 (those seeking entrance and acceptance into the game world, generally 12 ?16 year olds). Of particular fascination to the authors was that despite the clear self-demarcation of the group from the users of \u27leet speak\u27, and their insistence on its use solely by \u27newbs and wannabees\u27, the group continued to use the language to communicate with each other online. In this research, language defines the cultural group of games technology students in terms of the group\u27s continual subversion of the language\u27s very foundations whilst still using it to communicate. Perhaps most interesting was the group\u27s nonchalant admission that they perceived this to be the function of all languages \u27all languages are created purely for communication so dont [sic] have a cry about ppl been [sic] lazy\u27

    Games geeks in context: developing the environment to engage creative expression

    This paper explores the importance of purpose built combined technological and social collaborative environments in supporting the development of creativity in a cohort of students not generally associated with creative abilities. A supportive and nurturing environment provides these university students with a community where they can share knowledge and ideas, and subsequently engage in creative activities and behaviours. Such an environment directly impacts on the levels of engagement with which students&iuml;&iquest;&frac12; participate in their learning process. The authors draw on findings derived from a study of first year computer science students enrolled in a games design and development unit at an Australian university. This paper will focus on the ways in which the participants negotiate and regulate the exercise of power and control in the environment in order to enhance their own creative expression.<br /

    Patient Satisfaction with Professional Continuous Glucose Monitoring in a Diverse Family Medicine Clinic: A Pilot Study

    Primary care providers (PCPs) manage a large portion of patients with diabetes. Continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) can give detailed information about glucose trends to improve treatment and safety. We conducted a prospective cohort pilot study to understand patient experience with the use of professional CGM in a primary care practice with a high volume of diverse, non-English speakers. Eligible patients were on an insulin regimen and either had an A1c above goal or whose PCPs had concerns for hypoglycemia. Surveys were collected prior to the intervention to assess the acceptability of the patient's self-monitoring blood glucose efforts and after the intervention to assess their experience of using the CGM. Participants at baseline had a mean A1c of 10.6% and a high amount of emotional distress as measured on the Problem Areas in Diabetes (PAID) scale. Post-intervention, patients reported their experience with professional CGM was positive and, overall, as acceptable of an intervention as their previous self-monitoring blood glucose practice. Professional CGM can serve as an additional, acceptable tool for PCPs to better understand how to help patients achieve diabetes blood glucose goals. Ambulatory care pharmacists are well positioned to lead this effort in clinics

    Effects of ACTH, dexamethasone, and adrenalectomy on 11β-hydroxylase (CYP11B1) and aldosterone synthase (CYP11B2) gene expression in the rat central nervous system

    Using a highly sensitive quantitative RT-PCR method for the measurement of CYP11B1 (11β-hydroxylase) and CYP11B2 (aldosterone synthase) mRNAs, we previously demonstrated that CYP11B2 expression in the central nervous system (CNS) is subject to regulation by dietary sodium. We have now quantified the expression of these genes in the CNS of male Wistar Kyoto (WKY) rats in response to systemic ACTH infusion, dexamethasone infusion, and to adrenalectomy. CYP11B1 and CYP11B2 mRNA levels were measured in total RNA isolated from the adrenal gland and discrete brain regions using real-time quantitative RT-PCR. ACTH infusion (40 ng/day for 7 days, N=8) significantly increased CYP11B1 mRNA in the adrenal gland, hypothalamus, and cerebral cortex compared with animals infused with vehicle only. ACTH infusion decreased adrenal CYP11B2 expression but increased expression in all of the CNS regions except the cortex. Dexamethasone (10 μg/day for 7 days, N=8) reduced adrenal CYP11B1 mRNA compared with control animals but had no significant effect on either gene's expression in the CNS. Adrenalectomy (N=6 per group) significantly increased CYP11B1 expression in the hippocampus and hypothalamus and raised CYP11B2 expression in the cerebellum relative to sham-operated animals. This study confirms the transcription of CYP11B1 and CYP11B2 throughout the CNS and demonstrates that gene transcription is subject to differential regulation by ACTH and circulating corticosteroid levels

    Ibrutinib Unmasks Critical Role of Bruton Tyrosine Kinase in Primary CNS Lymphoma.

    Bruton tyrosine kinase (BTK) links the B-cell antigen receptor (BCR) and Toll-like receptors with NF-ÎşB. The role of BTK in primary central nervous system (CNS) lymphoma (PCNSL) is unknown. We performed a phase I clinical trial with ibrutinib, the first-in-class BTK inhibitor, for patients with relapsed or refractory CNS lymphoma. Clinical responses to ibrutinib occurred in 10 of 13 (77%) patients with PCNSL, including five complete responses. The only PCNSL with complete ibrutinib resistance harbored a mutation within the coiled-coil domain of CARD11, a known ibrutinib resistance mechanism. Incomplete tumor responses were associated with mutations in the B-cell antigen receptor-associated protein CD79B

    Natural Inflation: Particle Physics Models, Power Law Spectra for Large Scale Structure, and Constraints from COBE

    A pseudo-Nambu-Goldstone boson, with a potential of the form V(ϕ)=Λ4[1±cos⁡(ϕ/f)],naturallygivesrisetoinflationifV(\phi) = \Lambda^4[1 \pm \cos(\phi/f)], naturally gives rise to inflation if f \sim M_{Pl}and and \Lambda \sim M_{GUT}.Weshowhowthiscanariseintechnicolor−likeandsuperstringmodels,andworkoutanexplicitstringexampleinthecontextofmultiplegauginocondensationmodels.Westudythecosmologyofthismodelindetail,andfindthatsufficientreheatingtoensurethatbaryogenesiscantakeplacerequires. We show how this can arise in technicolor-like and superstring models, and work out an explicit string example in the context of multiple gaugino condensation models. We study the cosmology of this model in detail, and find that sufficient reheating to ensure that baryogenesis can take place requires f > 0.3 M_{Pl}.Theprimordialdensityfluctuationspectrumgeneratedisanon−scale−invariantpowerlaw,. The primordial density fluctuation spectrum generated is a non-scale-invariant power law, P(k) \propto k^{n_s},with, with n_s \simeq 1 - (M^2_{Pl}/8\pi f^2),leadingtomorepoweronlargelengthscalesthanthe, leading to more power on large length scales than the n_s = 1Harrison−Zeldovichspectrum.ThestandardCDMmodelwith Harrison-Zeldovich spectrum. The standard CDM model with 0 \la n_s \la 0.6-0.7couldinprincipleexplainthelarge−scaleclusteringobservedintheAPMandIRASgalaxysurveysaswellaslarge−scaleflows,buttheCOBEmicrowaveanisotropyimpliessuchlowamplitudes(orhighbiasfactors, could in principle explain the large-scale clustering observed in the APM and IRAS galaxy surveys as well as large-scale flows, but the COBE microwave anisotropy implies such low amplitudes (or high bias factors, b>2)fortheseCDMmodelsthatgalaxyformationoccurstoolatetobeviable;combiningCOBEwithsufficientlyearlygalaxyformationorthelarge−scaleflowsleadsto) for these CDM models that galaxy formation occurs too late to be viable; combining COBE with sufficiently early galaxy formation or the large-scale flows leads to n_s >0.6,or, or f > 0.3 M_{Pl}aswell.Forextendedandpowerlawinflationmodels,thisconstraintiseventighter, as well. For extended and power law inflation models, this constraint is even tighter, n_s > 0.7$; combined with other bounds on large bubbles in extended inflation, this leaves little room for most extended models.Comment: 42 pages, (12 figures not included but available from the authors
