    REPORT ON A CASE CONCERNED WITH EMOTIONAL BEHAVIOUR AND SOCIAL SKILLS

    Introduction: This is a case study report of a 3-year old Indonesian boy (Daf) who entered an Australian childcare because the mother has to study abroad. Nurses need to know how issues of different culture and languages affect a young child’s development. Method: Interview with the mother and carers in the childcare and three observations which conducted once at home and two observations at childcare Results: Daf is very different from home to childcare. Daf appears to be a boy with shy temperament at childcare. His interactions with peers are quite poor. Differently, he was very active and talked active at home. From the three initial mom’s concerns of grasping pencil/crayon in writing position (fine motor), attachment issues, and verbal aggression and anger, there are a number of other issues revealed such as poor social skills and a lack of negotiation skills as impact of having hit by a peer at childcare. Discussion: Daf is in his transition from a toddler to a preschooler. Daf is transitioning from a mother tongue day care setting to English childcare setting with limited English capacity in new environment, which prevents him from interacting with other native kids.     Thinning and drilling laser-assisted hatching in thawed embryo transfer : A randomized controlled trial

    Objective: In frozen and thawed embryos, the zona pellucida (ZP) can be damaged due to hardening. Laser-assisted hatching (LAH) of embryos can increase the pregnancy rate. This study compared thinning and drilling of the ZP before frozen embryo transfer (FET). Methods: Patients were randomly allocated into two groups for LAH using thinning or drilling on day 2 after thawing. Twenty-five percent of the ZP circumference and 50% of the ZP thickness was removed in the thinning group, and a hole 40 μm in diameter was made in the drilling group. Results: A total of 171 in vitro fertilization/intracytoplasmic sperm injection FET cycles, including 85 cycles with drilling LAH and 86 cycles with thinning LAH, were carried out. The thinning group had a similar β-human chorionic gonadotropin-positive rate (38.4% vs. 29.4%), implantation rate (16.5% vs. 14.4%), clinical pregnancy rate (36.0% vs. 25.9%), miscarriage rate (5.8% vs. 2.4%), ongoing pregnancy rate (30.2% vs. 23.5%), and multiple pregnancy rate (7.0% vs. 10.6%) to the drilling LAH group. There were no significant differences in pregnancy outcomes between subgroups defined based on age (older or younger than 35 years) or ZP thickness (greater or less than 17 μm) according to the LAH method. Conclusion: The present study demonstrated that partial ZP thinning or drilling resulted in similar outcomes in implantation and pregnancy rates using thawed embryos, irrespective of women's age or ZP thickness. © 2018.     We examine the incipient infinite cluster (IIC) of critical percolation in regimes where mean-field behavior has been established, namely when the dimension d is large enough or when d>6 and the lattice is sufficiently spread out. We find that random walk on the IIC exhibits anomalous diffusion with the spectral dimension d_s=4/3, that is, p_t(x,x)= t^{-2/3+o(1)}. This establishes a conjecture of Alexander and Orbach.     Peptide-mediated growth and dispersion of Au nanoparticles in water via sequence engineering

    YesThe use of peptides to nucleate, grow, and stabilize nanoparticles in aqueous media via non-covalent interactions offers new possibilities for creating functional, water-dispersed inorganic/organic hybrid materials, particularly for Au nanoparticles. Numerous previous studies have identified peptide sequences that both possess a strong binding affinity for Au surfaces and are capable of supporting nanoparticle growth in water. However, recent studies have shown that not all such peptide sequences can produce stable dispersions of these nanoparticles. Here, via integrated experiments and molecular modeling, we provide new insights into the many factors that influence Au nanoparticle growth and stabilization in aqueous media. We define colloidal stability by the absence of visible precipitation after at least 24 hours post-synthesis. We use binding affinity measurements, nanoparticle synthesis, characterization and stabilization assays, and molecular modeling, to investigate a set of sequences based on two known peptides with strong affinity for Au. This set of biomolecules is designed to probe specific sequence and context effects using both point mutations and global reorganization of the peptides. Our data confirm, for a broader range of sequences, that Au nanoparticle/peptide binding affinity alone is not predictive of peptide-mediated colloidal stability. By comparing nanoparticle stabilization assay outcomes with molecular simulations, we establish a correlation between the colloidal stability of the Au nanoparticles and the degree of conformational diversity in the surface-adsorbed peptides. Our findings suggest future routes to engineer peptide sequences for bio-based growth and dispersion of functional nanoparticles in aqueous media.Air Office of Scientific Research, grant number FA9550-12-1-0226

    Novel application of local GAC adsorption to remove organic matters and pesticides in rural drinking water treatment

    Novel application of granular activated carbon (GAC) using renewable and low cost materials to remove pesticides and organic matters was studied in the rural water treatment plant (WTP), in Hai Duong province, Vietnam. The treatment efficiencies of the a series of processes such as coagulation/ flocculation, horizontal sedimentation, rapid sand filtration and adsorption using three types of GAC (activated carbon from bituminous coal, from bamboo and from coconut shell) and the overall treatment trains were evaluated by studying several parameters such as turbidity, COD, pesticides (chlorpyrifos, diazinon, carbofuran). Results show that the two locally produced adsorbents have a similar efficiency to commercial activated carbon for adsorption. The removal efficiency was somewhat lower for both materials, but in the same order of magnitude. The removal of pesticides and organic matter with a column filled with activated carbon derived from bamboo was found the best among the two locally produced materials, approximately 30% and 23% higher than those observed for the column filled with activated carbon from coconut shells. It concludes that bamboo-derived activated carbon adsorption can be employed on an alternative to commercial activated carbon and could be a feasible option for drinking water treatment
