Theory of Ostwald ripening in a two-component system
When a two-component system is cooled below the minimum temperature for its stability, it separates into two or more immiscible phases. The initial nucleation produces grains (if solid) or droplets (if liquid) of one of the phases dispersed in the other. The dynamics by which these nuclei proceed toward equilibrium is called Ostwald ripening. The dynamics of growth of the droplets depends upon the following factors: (1) The solubility of the droplet depends upon its radius and the interfacial energy between it and the surrounding (continuous) phase. There is a critical radius determined by the supersaturation in the continuous phase. Droplets with radii smaller than critical dissolve, while droplets with radii larger grow. (2) The droplets concentrate one component and reject the other. The rate at which this occurs is assumed to be determined by the interdiffusion of the two components in the continuous phase. (3) The Ostwald ripening is constrained by conservation of mass; e.g., the amount of materials in the droplet phase plus the remaining supersaturation in the continuous phase must equal the supersaturation available at the start. (4) There is a distribution of droplet sizes associated with a mean droplet radius, which grows continuously with time. This distribution function satisfies a continuity equation, which is solved asymptotically by a similarity transformation method
Measurements and Simulation Studies of Piezoceramics for Acoustic Particle Detection
Calibration sources are an indispensable tool for all detectors. In acoustic
particle detection the goal of a calibration source is to mimic neutrino
signatures as expected from hadronic cascades. A simple and promising method
for the emulation of neutrino signals are piezo ceramics. We will present
results of measruements and simulations on these piezo ceramics.Comment: 5 pages, 5 figure
Development of High Granulated Straw Chambers of Large Sizes
We have developed the baseline design for the straw drift tube tracking
detectors for high rate environment application. The low-mass inner straw
elements and the technology of the multianode straws assembly was devised and
checked. The prototype chamber was constructed and studied the granularity of
similar chambers can be reduced to one cm2.

Mechanism of action of VP1-001 in cryAB(R120G)-associated and age-related cataracts
PurposeWe previously identified an oxysterol, VP1-001 (also known as compound 29), that partially restores the transparency of lenses with cataracts. To understand the mechanism of VP1-001, we tested the ability of its enantiomer, ent-VP1-001, to bind and stabilize αB-crystallin (cryAB) in vitro and to produce a similar therapeutic effect in cryAB(R120G) mutant and aged wild-type mice with cataracts. VP1-001 and ent-VP1-001 have identical physicochemical properties. These experiments are designed to critically evaluate whether stereoselective binding to cryAB is required for activity.MethodsWe compared the binding of VP1-001 and ent-VP1-001 to cryAB using in silico docking, differential scanning fluorimetry (DSF), and microscale thermophoresis (MST). Compounds were delivered by six topical administrations to mouse eyes over 2 weeks, and the effects on cataracts and lens refractive measures in vivo were examined. Additionally, lens epithelial and fiber cell morphologies were assessed via transmission electron microscopy.ResultsDocking studies suggested greater binding of VP1-001 into a deep groove in the cryAB dimer compared with ent-VP1-001. Consistent with this prediction, DSF and MST experiments showed that VP1-001 bound cryAB, whereas ent-VP1-001 did not. Accordingly, topical treatment of lenses with ent-VP1-001 had no effect, whereas VP1-001 produced a statistically significant improvement in lens clarity and favorable changes in lens morphology.ConclusionsThe ability of VP1-001 to bind native cryAB dimers is important for its ability to reverse lens opacity in mouse models of cataracts
On the search for the chiral anomaly in Weyl semimetals: The negative longitudinal magnetoresistance
Recently, the existence of massless chiral (Weyl) fermions has been
postulated in a class of semi-metals with a non-trivial energy dispersion.These
materials are now commonly dubbed Weyl semi-metals (WSM).One predicted property
of Weyl fermions is the chiral or Adler-Bell-Jackiw anomaly, a chirality
imbalance in the presence of parallel magnetic and electric fields. In WSM, it
is expected to induce a negative longitudinal magnetoresistance (NMR), the
chiral magnetic effect.Here, we present experimental evidence that the
observation of the chiral magnetic effect can be hindered by an effect called
"current jetting". This effect also leads to a strong apparent NMR, but it is
characterized by a highly non-uniform current distribution inside the sample.
It appears in materials possessing a large field-induced anisotropy of the
resistivity tensor, such as almost compensated high-mobility semimetals due to
the orbital effect.In case of a non-homogeneous current injection, the
potential distribution is strongly distorted in the sample.As a consequence, an
experimentally measured potential difference is not proportional to the
intrinsic resistance.Our results on the MR of the WSM candidate materials NbP,
NbAs, TaAs, TaP exhibit distinct signatures of an inhomogeneous current
distribution, such as a field-induced "zero resistance' and a strong dependence
of the `measured resistance" on the position, shape, and type of the voltage
and current contacts on the sample. A misalignment between the current and the
magnetic-field directions can even induce a "negative resistance".
Finite-element simulations of the potential distribution inside the sample,
using typical resistance anisotropies, are in good agreement with the
experimental findings. Our study demonstrates that great care must be taken
before interpreting measurements of a NMR as evidence for the chiral anomaly in
putative Weyl semimetals.Comment: 13 pages, 6 figure

From 01.02.2009 to 06.02.2009, the Dagstuhl Seminar 09061 ``Combinatorial Scientific Computing \u27\u27 was held in Schloss Dagstuhl -- Leibniz Center for Informatics.
During the seminar, several participants presented their current
research, and ongoing work and open problems were discussed. Abstracts of
the presentations given during the seminar as well as abstracts of
seminar results and ideas are put together in this paper. The first section
describes the seminar topics and goals in general.

Soil-transmitted helminths and haemoglobin status among Afghan children in World Food Programme assisted schools
In recent years there have been major socio-economic changes within Afghanistan such that the present public health burden of soil-transmitted helminths (STH), especially that within school-aged children, remains to be determined. A baseline parasitological survey was therefore carried out in four defined areas of Afghanistan to better assess the distribution, prevalence and intensity of STH infections prior to a nationwide de-worming campaign beginning within World Food Programme assisted schools. A cross-sectional examination of 1001 children aged between 8 and 15 years old revealed that approximately half (47.2%) were infected with at least one STH. Infections with Ascaris lumbricoides were most widespread (40.9%) and elevated prevalences were detected in urban environments; for example, schoolchildren in Kabul were more likely to be infected (OR=2.2, 95% CI 1.6-3.0) than elsewhere and these infections were often of higher intensity (OR=7.6, 95% CI 4.9-11.8). Trichuris trichiura (9.9%) and hookworms (0.7%), previously unknown from Afghanistan, were encountered. The blood haemoglobin concentration of surveyed children was also assessed: 4% resulted to be anaemic (Hb<11 g dl−1), and 0.4% to be severely anaemic (Hb<7 g dl−1
Quasi two-dimensional Fermi surface topography of the delafossite PdRhO2

A high sensitivity torque magnetometry setup with SQUID readout and synchrotron-based photoemission with a light spot size of ~50μm enabled high resolution data to be obtained from samples as small as 150 × 100 × 20(μm)3. The Fermi surface shape is nearly cylindrical with a rounded hexagonal cross section enclosing a Luttinger volume of 1.00(1) electrons per formula unit.PostprintPeer reviewe
