    Transcribing Kuhlau for the Saxophone: A Stylistic Bridge

    This dissertation examines and adapts for saxophone Three Fantasias, Op. 95 for unaccompanied flute by Friedrich Kuhlau (1786-1832), a composer of enduring popularity and respect among flutists. Musical repertoire written for saxophone began in the late 1800s, and became more robust in the twentieth century. Because of this relative dearth, especially in early works that predate the instrumentā€™s invention, saxophonists have routinely relied on transcriptions of period music for pedagogy, performance, and recording. Transcriptions of works by Baroque composers, especially those of J. S. Bach, are particularly popular. This, however, has left a large chronological and stylistic gap in common-practice period music. This dissertation begins to address this gap by analyzing, transcribing, and recording early romantic composer Freidrich Kuhlauā€™s Fantasias, Op. 95 (1826) for alto saxophone. While originally written for flute, this work is an important addition to the saxophone repertoire because it is idiomatic for the instrument, explores stylistic and technical challenges that typify music of this era, and provides historical context to the significant repertoire of later unaccompanied works for winds that grew out of this tradition.     Central Asia and the globalisation of the contemporary legal consciousness

    What is the logic which governs the processes of legal globalization? How does the transnational proliferation of legal forms operate in the contemporary geo-juridical space? What are the main defining characteristics of the currently dominant mode of transnational legal consciousness and how can the concept of legal consciousness help us understand better the historical ebb and flow of the Western-led projects of good governance promotion in regions like Central Asia after the fall of the Soviet Union? Using Duncan Kennedyā€™s seminal essay Three Globalizations of Law and Legal Thought as its starting platform, this essay seeks to explore these and a series of other related questions, while also drawing on the work of the Greek Marxist lawyer-philosopher Nicos Poulantzas to help elucidate some latent analytical stress-points in Kennedyā€™s broader theoretical framework. Reacting against the neo-Orientalist tone adopted across much of the contemporary field of Central Asian studies, it develops an alternative account of the internal history of the legal-globalizational encounter between the Western-based reform entrepreneurs and the national legal-political elites in Central Asia in the post-1991 period, complementing it with a detailed description of the general institutional and discursive structures within which this encounter took place

    The combination of algorithms from the structure-modeling field with those of crystallographic structure determination can broaden the range of templates that are useful for structure determination by the method of molecular replacement. Automated tools in phenix.mr_rosetta simplify the application of these combined approaches by integrating Phenix crystallographic algorithms and Rosetta structure-modeling algorithms and by systematically generating and evaluating models with a combination of these methods. The phenix.mr_rosetta algorithms can be used to automatically determine challenging structures. The approaches used in phenix.mr_rosetta are described along with examples that show roles that structure-modeling can play in molecular replacement
