Analyzing Undergraduate Students’ Performance in Various Perspectives using Data Mining Approach

The data mining provides better insight rather than the predefined queries or reports for quality enhancement and improvement of an academic program to extract hidden knowledge in students’ performance in various courses. This paper presents data mining approach applied to discover students’ performance patterns in two different perspectives (a) supervised and unsupervised assessment instruments and (b) discover students’ performance patterns in mathematics, English, and programming courses in an engineering degree program. The interesting patterns emerging from both analytic studies offer helpful and constructive suggestions for the improvement and revision of assessment methodologies, restructuring the curriculum, and modifying the prerequisites requirements of various courses. Analyzing Lifestyle and Environmental Factors on Semen Fertility using Association Rule Mining

The data mining has been used to extract hidden knowledge more effectively for analysis of business, academic, agricultural, as well as medical data in contrast to the predefined queries or reports. This paper presents the impacts of lifestyle and environmental factors of a man on the fertility and quality of semen using association rule mining. The association rules have been mined from data collected by a normalized questionnaire from young volunteers and are found to be useful in predicting the quality of semen based on individual’s lifestyle and environmental factors. An e-Course file management system: A green campus initiative

Most accreditation agencies require academic institutions to maintain course files as an integral part of monitoring the overall quality of the educational process and to gauge how effective the course(s) have been taught and assessed at the time of offering each individual course. The paper-based course files maintained manually present a variety of disadvantages that include physical storage, retrieval issues, and recurring paper and printing costs. Moreover, the extensive paper usage required to maintain course files poses negative environmental impacts occurring during the paper making and disposal stages of paper life-cycle. As a green campus initiative, we propose a prototype eCourse file database management system to compile and organize the course files via user friendly graphical user interfaces. A survey of simulation techniques in commerce and defence

Despite the developments in Modelling and Simulation (M&S) tools and techniques over the past years, there has been a gap in the M&S research and practice in healthcare on developing a toolkit to assist the modellers and simulation practitioners with selecting an appropriate set of techniques. This study is a preliminary step towards this goal. This paper presents some results from a systematic literature survey on applications of M&S in the commerce and defence domains that could inspire some improvements in the healthcare. Interim results show that in the commercial sector Discrete-Event Simulation (DES) has been the most widely used technique with System Dynamics (SD) in second place. However in the defence sector, SD has gained relatively more attention. SD has been found quite useful for qualitative and soft factors analysis. From both the surveys it becomes clear that there is a growing trend towards using hybrid M&S approaches

An Outcome-Based Assessment And Improvement System For Measuring Student Performance And Course Effectiveness

The evaluation of students’ expected performance and course effectiveness play a vital role in determining the course contribution toward meeting the program’s learning objectives or outcomes. The success of any course not only requires a well-designed syllabus with clearly defined course learning outcomes and the use of appropriate outcome-based teaching and assessment methods, but also a systematic approach to document and analyze the entire assessment data and results. Such an approach will be helpful in providing a better insight and understanding of students’ competency levels achieved in all course learning outcomes which ultimately would facilitate course instructors in their efforts to improve course curricula and to introduce reforms in teaching and assessment processes. This paper presents a simple and easy-to-use system that aids course instructors in recording and analyzing the results of various assessment instruments administered in their courses. A detailed analysis provided by the system would also guide curriculum planners and assessors in suggesting reforms and improvements at the program level
