    The Nutritional Status of Japanese Black Breeding Cows Grazed in a Larger Abandoned Paddy Field

    Because rice consumption has decreased in Japan, the number of abandoned paddy fields has increased. Some of the abandoned paddy fields are being used for livestock grazing, effectively using the abandoned fields and reducing the production costs on livestock farms. Such grazing may use an integrated grazing system of scattered small pastures where each of the small abandoned paddy fields scattered in a given agriculture area is defined as one grazing yard, and a herd consisting of two or three head of cattle is moved from one grazing yard to another. However, because the number of abandoned paddy fields has increased, it may be possible to have cattle grazing in larger fields made by combining multiple abandoned paddy fields (Shindo and Tejima 2006).     Correlation between fabrication factor and superconducting properties of the Tl-and-Bi-based high-Tc superconductor

    Large critical current densities (J(sub c)) were obtained in c axis oriented Tl-1 223/Ag composite tapes fabricated by spraying methods without a vacuum. Transport measurements at 77K under a zero field indicated a J(sub c) of 9 x 10(exp 4) A/sq cm and 7 x 10(exp 3) A/sq cm at 1T for the tapes fabricated by spray pyrolysis. The novel GPM method was also applied for Bi-2212/Ag PIT composite wire, and found to be very effective for improving the distribution of voids, which caused from the melt-solidifying process.     Physiological and Pathological Mitochondrial Clearance Is Related to Pectoralis Major Muscle Pathogenesis in Broilers With Wooden Breast Syndrome

    Wooden breast syndrome (WB) constitutes an emerging myopathy in the pectoralis major muscle (PM) of broiler chickens, characterized by myofiber hypertrophy and degeneration along with severe fibrosis. WB pathogenesis has been considered to involve hypoxia induced by rapid growth of the PM. In this study, we focused on mitochondrial morphology and dynamics in the myofibers, as these organelles are sensitive to damage by hypoxia, and examined the effects on WB pathogenesis. Specifically, the PMs of a flock of 35 broilers at 50 days of age were evaluated. First, the severity of disease in each bird was determined by measuring histopathological indices including the fibrotic area (FA) in the muscle and circularity of myofibers (CM). These values were 29.4 ± 9.6% and 0.70 ± 0.042, respectively, showing variety among the flock. Myofiber vacuolization was observed in all birds including numerous small- or large-rimmed vacuoles, with the former consisting of ultrastructurally autophagosome-like vacuoles engulfing degenerated mitochondria. The large-rimmed vacuoles frequently occurred in the PMs with more severe FA and CM, indicating a relationship between altered autophagy/mitophagy and WB severity. Next, the expression levels of hypoxia-adaptive and mitochondrial dynamics-related genes were analyzed, and their correlations with the histopathological indices were examined. The histopathological indices were negatively correlated with the expression of vascular endothelial growth factor A (VEGFA), indicating that less angiogenesis owing to weakened hypoxia-inducible factor signaling induces more severe WB pathology. In addition, the observed negative correlation with mitochondrial dynamics-related genes implied that WB pathology deteriorates concomitant with reduced mitochondrial dynamics. Furthermore, the expression of mitochondrial dynamics-related genes showed strong positive correlation with that of VEGFA and autophagy-/mitophagy-related genes. These results revealed that the PMs of broilers possess the mechanism of physiological clearance of mitochondria damaged by the hypoxia resulting from the continuous mitochondrial dynamics and autophagy/mitophagy accompanying rapid PM growth. In turn, the altered mitochondrial clearance induced by chronic hypoxia and the accumulation of damaged mitochondria likely underly the severe pathological features of WB.ArticleFrontiers in Pharmacology.11:579(2020)journal articl

    Topographic Survey of the Naga-une Mounded Tomb No. 10 in Mirasaka, Miyoshi City

    The Naga-une mounded tomb No.10 is supposed to be a round or scallop shell-shaped mounded tomb located in Mirasaka-chō, Miyoshi City, Hiroshima Prefecture. As part of “Field Practice in Archaeology C” for the twenty-fifth annual class of archaeology majors at the Hiroshima University School of Letters, we conducted a topographic survey of this mound with the aim of clarifying its scale, shape and the date of its construction. This mounded tomb has been altered by land reclamation for a vineyard, however, we could reconstruct its shape according to the plan, based on some parts that so far remained in good condition. The results of this survey indicated that the Naga-une mounded tomb is a scallop shell-shaped mounded tomb of the Kofun period, 19.5m in length and was constructed in the second half of the 6th century AD (additional interment may be performed at the beginning of the 7th century). This allows the conclusion that the building of small scallop shell-shaped mounded tombs also continued in the second half of the Late Kofun period. Additionally, we assumed the possibility that this mound has a corridor-style stone chamber with horizontal side entrance because of the additional interment, and that many kinds of the Sue ware were put on the floor of this chamber, which was typical in the regions of Miyoshi and Shōbara City in the northern part of Hiroshima Prefecture and the San’in region
