Determination of the optimal number of clusters based on VI and MI in intracalcarine cortex. The intracalcarine cortex was selected as a control region. The VI and MI values are shown for every clustering solution for k values ranging from 2 to 10. Arrows indicate either local minima of VI or local maxima of MI. Dashed lines denote the optimal number of solutions as determined using both VI and MI. The error bars denote standard errors of the mean for 100 repetitions of the split-half procedure (see the “Estimation of the optimal number of clusters” section). “n.s.” indicates no statistically significant difference between points. Formation of 2D single-component correlated electron system and band engineering in the nickelate superconductor NdNiO2

Motivated by the recent experimental discovery of superconductivity in the infinite-layer nickelate Nd0.8Sr0.2NiO2 [Li et al., Nature (London) 572, 624 (2019)], we study how the correlated Ni 3dx2−y2 electrons in the NiO2 layer interact with the electrons in the Nd layer. We show that three orbitals are necessary to represent the electronic structure around the Fermi level: Ni 3dx2−y2, Nd 5d3z2−r2, and a bonding orbital made from an interstitial s orbital in the Nd layer and the Nd 5dxy orbital. By constructing a three-orbital model for these states, we find that the hybridization between the Ni 3dx2−y2 state and the states in the Nd layer is tiny. We also find that the metallic screening by the Nd layer is not so effective in that it reduces the Hubbard U between the Ni 3dx2−y2 electrons just by 10%–20%. On the other hand, the electron-phonon coupling is not strong enough to mediate superconductivity of Tc∼10 K. These results indicate that NdNiO2 hosts an almost isolated correlated 3dx2−y2 orbital system. We further study the possibility of realizing a more ideal single-orbital system in the Mott-Hubbard regime. We find that the Fermi pockets formed by the Nd-layer states dramatically shrink when the hybridization between the interstitial s state and Nd 5dxy state becomes small. By an extensive materials search, we find that the Fermi pockets almost disappear in NaNd2NiO4 and NaCa2NiO3

The right temporoparietal junction during a cooperation dilemma: An rTMS study

Cooperation enhances interpersonal communication and nurtures society. However, efforts to socially cooperate may often evoke conflict. Individuals may selfishly pursue a greater reward or success by exploiting the efforts of other individuals or taking unnecessary risk to oneself. Such a cooperation dilemma is highly prevalent in real life; thus, it has been studied in various disciplines. Although published functional magnetic resonance imaging studies have shown the involvement of the right temporoparietal junction (TPJ) in resolving a dilemma through cooperation, a causal relationship between the two has rarely been explored. Hence, we investigated this issue by combining repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation with a priority game task (modified snowdrift game). In this game task, participants and opponent players jointly faced a problem whereby their collaboration was anticipated to defuse the situation. This conflicted with a choice in the participant's self-interest that was more rewarding but risky. We further included conditions with and without explicit social cues using figures describing elderly/pregnant passengers in the game opponent's car, and measured participants' prosocial traits to examine any cue-induced effect as well as the personality-cooperation relationship, respectively. The cooperation ratio was not statistically different in both the no-cue and with-cue conditions between the sham stimulation and inhibitory continuous theta burst stimulation (cTBS). However, after cTBS, in the no-cue condition, the strength of the association between cooperation ratio and empathy traits decreased significantly. These results add to our knowledge about the right TPJ's role in social cognition, which may be extraordinarily complex. This topic is deserving of further examination

To elucidate the functions of a large population of rice genes and to search efficiently for agriculturally useful genes, we have been taking advantage of the Full-length cDNA Over-eXpresser (FOX) gene-hunting system. This system is very useful for analyzing various gain-of-function phenotypes from large populations of transgenic plants overexpressing cDNAs of interest and others with unknown or important functions. We collected the plasmid DNAs of 13 980 independent full-length cDNA (FL-cDNA) clones to produce a FOX library by placing individual cDNAs under the control of the maize Ubiquitin-1 promoter. The FOX library was transformed into rice by Agrobacterium-mediated high-speed transformation. So far, we have generated approximately 12 000 FOX-rice lines. Genomic PCR analysis indicated that the average number of FL-cDNAs introduced into individual lines was 1.04. Sequencing analysis of the PCR fragments carrying FL-cDNAs from 8615 FOX-rice lines identified FL-cDNAs in 8225 lines, and a database search classified the cDNAs into 5462 independent ones. Approximately 16.6% of FOX-rice lines examined showed altered growth or morphological characteristics. Three super-dwarf mutants overexpressed a novel gibberellin 2-oxidase gene, confirming the importance of this system. We also show here the other morphological alterations caused by individual FL-cDNA expression. These dominant phenotypes should be valuable indicators for gene discovery and functional analysis.publishersversionPeer reviewe
