    Zero-modes on orbifolds : magnetized orbifold models by modular transformation

    We study T2/ZNT^2/Z_N orbifold models with magnetic fluxes. We propose a systematic way to analyze the number of zero-modes and their wavefunctions by use of modular transformation. Our results are consistent with the previous results, and our approach is more direct and analytical than the previous ones. The index theorem implies that the zero-mode number of the Dirac operator on T2T^2 is equal to the index MM, which corresponds to the magnetic flux in a certain unit. Our results show that the zero-mode number of the Dirac operator on T2/ZNT^2/Z_N is equal to M/N+1\lfloor M/N \rfloor +1 except one case on the T2/Z3T^2/Z_3 orbifold.Comment: 30 page

    Modular symmetry in magnetized/intersecting D-brane models

    We study the modular symmetry in four-dimensional low-energy effective field theory, which is derived from type IIB magnetized D-brane models and type IIA intersecting D-brane models. We analyze modular symmetric behaviors of perturbative terms and non-perturbative terms induced by D-brane instanton effects. Anomalies are also investigated and such an analysis on anomalies suggests corrections in effective field theory.Comment: 18 page

    We study the modular symmetry in magnetized D-brane models on T2T^2. Non-Abelian flavor symmetry D4D_4 in the model with magnetic flux M=2M=2 (in a certain unit) is a subgroup of the modular symmetry. We also study the modular symmetry in heterotic orbifold models. The T2/Z4T^2/Z_4 orbifold model has the same modular symmetry as the magnetized brane model with M=2M=2, and its flavor symmetry D4D_4 is a subgroup of the modular symmetry.Comment: 28 page

    Observation and Modeling of Seawater Exchange in a Strait-Basin System in the Seto Inland Sea, Japan

    The seawater exchange is closely related to the spreading of pollutant and the water quality in coastal seas. The Seto Inland Sea is a semi-enclosed coastal sea which has a series of broad basins and narrow straits, and the along-channel outflows from the strait located at the center of the channel toward east and west may play an important role in seawater exchange. In this study, flows along the boundary between Bisan Seto which is located at the center of the Seto Inland Sea and the adjacent basin called Harima Nada were measured using a ship-mounted Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler and residual flows were obtained by removing tidal currents. The survey results showed significant volume flux of the along-channel outflows from Bisan Seto toward Harima Nada. A numerical model based on Princeton Ocean Model was also used in order to analyze the driving forces of the along-channel outflow. The outflow was well reproduced using the model which was driven by tide and horizontal density gradient between the strait and basin, suggesting that these possibly induce the seawater exchange in the Seto Inland Sea

    Prospective Investigation of Surgical Outcomes after Anterior Decompression with Fusion and Laminoplasty for the Cervical Ossification of the Posterior Longitudinal Ligament: A Propensity Score Matching Analysis

    The ideal surgical strategy for cervical ossification of the posterior longitudinal ligament (OPLL) remains controversial due to the lack of high-quality evidence. Herein, we prospectively investigated the surgical outcomes of anterior cervical decompression with fusion (ADF) and laminoplasty (LAMP) with cervical OPLL. Three hundred patients were included in this study (ADF: n = 89; LAMP: n = 211 patients), and propensity score matching yielded 67 pairs of patients with ADF and LAMP, in which clinical outcomes were compared. Crude analysis revealed that the ADF group showed greater neurological recovery in cervical Japanese Orthopedic Association scores at two years, compared with that in the LAMP group (53.1% vs. 44.3%, p = 0.037). The ratio of minimum clinically important difference (MCID) success was significantly greater in the ADF group (59.6% vs. 43.6%, p = 0.016). Multivariate analysis showed that the factors affecting MCID success were age, body mass index, duration of symptoms, and choice of ADF. In the 1:1 matched analysis, neurological improvement was more favorable in the ADF group (57.2%) compared to the LAMP group (46.8%) at two years (p = 0.049). However, perioperative complications, such as dysphagia and graft-related complications, were more common in the ADF group
