    A novel algorithm for dynamic student profile adaptation based on learning styles

The Publisher's final version can be found by following the DOI link.E-learning recommendation systems are used to enhance student performance and knowledge by providing tailor- made services based on the students’ preferences and learning styles, which are typically stored in student profiles. For such systems to remain effective, the profiles need to be able to adapt and reflect the students’ changing behaviour. In this paper, we introduce new algorithms that are designed to track student learning behaviour patterns, capture their learning styles, and maintain dynamic student profiles within a recommendation system (RS). This paper also proposes a new method to extract features that characterise student behaviour to identify students’ learning styles with respect to the Felder-Silverman learning style model (FSLSM). In order to test the efficiency of the proposed algorithm, we present a series of experiments that use a dataset of real students to demonstrate how our proposed algorithm can effectively model a dynamic student profile and adapt to different student learning behaviour. The results revealed that the students could effectively increase their learning efficiency and quality for the courses when the learning styles are identified, and proper recommendations are made by using our method

    Multi-Terminal Networks with an Untrusted Relay

    This paper investigates the impact of cooperation with an untrusted relay in multi-source multi-destination networks. The set up considered is one where the relay is the only means of communications due to the absence of direct links between the sources and the destinations. Since the relay is untrusted, all messages from the sources need to be kept secret from the relay. Furthermore, the destinations are assumed to have different levels of security clearance, i.e., some private messages should only be decoded by their intended receiver and should be kept secret from other destinations. An achievable secure rate region is found by using random binning at the sources, cooperative jamming from the destinations, and compress-and-forward at the relay. Additionally, a genie aided outer bound on the secure rate region is derived. Comparison of inner and outer bounds are provided

    Implementation of external magnetic field to improve strength of St37 steel resistance spot weld

    The magnetic assist technique involves the interaction between an external magnetic field and electrical current which produces Lorentz force that influences the flow pattern of molten metal and ultimately impacts the appearance and microstructure of the weld. Many parameters may influence on this process such as welding current, time, and force as well as the working magnet distance (MD). In this study, the effects of the distance between the permanent magnet’s MD on the heat-affected zone (HAZ) and weld nugget zone (NZ) were examined through mechanical and macro- and microstructural analyses. The results demonstrated that MD has a strong influence on the magnetic flux density which determines the joint appearance, quality, and microstructure of St37 steel. Results showed that with increasing MD, HAZ increased from 8 to 22 mm2 while NZ decreased from 26 to 19 mm2, and also, the grain size increased with increasing MD and reaching 48 µm at MD was set to 9 cm. Moreover, hardness decreased at both areas through increasing MD from (120–110) HV at HAZ and from (170–150) HV at NZ. Under the action of (electromagnetic filed) EMF, weld tensile shear strength and the cross tensile strength give the highest values equal to 172 MPa and 155 MPa, respectively, when MD is set to 4.5 cm. Besides, soundness joint was obtained at MD = 4.5 cm which confirms that this is the best distance between magnets

    Prevalence of Legionella among pneumonia patients and environmental water samples in an Egyptian University Hospital

    AbstractObjectives: to diagnose Legionella infection in community- acquired pneumonia (CAP) cases admitted to chest department of Zagazig University Hospital and in hospital- acquired pneumonia (HAP) patients hospitalized in the emergency and surgery ICU, to determine incidence of these disease condition and to identify risk factors. Another objective was to determine the occurrence of Legionella genus in the water of these departments.Subjects and methods: one hundred pneumonic patients; 50 patients with CAP and 50 with HAP were the subject of this laboratory-based, comparative cross sectional study. Full clinical history and lower respiratory tract specimens were collected from each patient. Water samples were taken from 25 water outlets. DNA was extracted by QIAamp DNA Mini Kit, and real time PCR amplification of 16s r-RNA gene was used for diagnosis of Legionella genus. Risk factors were analyzed by logistic regression analysis.Results: Legionella genus was identified in eight out of 50 patients of CAP (16%), and ten out of 50 patients with HAP (20%). As regards CAP, Legionella was prevalent in old- age, smoker males, with diabetes mellitus (DM) and/or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Gastrointestinal tract (GIT) and neurological manifestations were the main presentations. Seventy-five percent needed ICU admission. Concerning HAP, hospitalization for more than ten days and having a stroke or head trauma were significant risk factors. Ten out of the 25 water samples tested were positive for Legionella genus; seven samples were from the chest department and three were from emergency ICU. No water-contamination with Legionella was found in the surgery ICU.Discussion: diagnosis of Legionella should be considered for both CAP and HAP in our locality. Periodic surveillance for detection of that genus with subsequent disinfection of water sources when indicated should be carried out

    An Ensemble Model for Detection of Adverse Drug Reactions

    The detection of adverse drug reactions (ADRs) plays a necessary role in comprehending the safety and benefit profiles of medicines. Although spontaneous reporting stays the standard approach for ADR documents, it suffers from significant under reporting rates and limitations in terms of treatment inspection. This study proposes an ensemble model that combines decision trees, support vector machines, random forests, and adaptive boosting (ADA-boost) to improve ADR detection. The experimental evaluation applied the benchmark data set and many preprocessing techniques such as tokenization, stop-word removal, stemming, and utilization of Point-wise Mutual Information. In addition, two term representations, namely, term frequency-inverse document frequency and term frequency, are utilized. The proposed ensemble model achieves an F-measure of 89% on the dataset. The proposed ensemble model shows its ability in detecting ADR to be a favored option in achieving both accuracy and clarity

    Stability and Existence of Solutions for a Tripled Problem of Fractional Hybrid Delay Differential Equations

    The purpose of this paper is to determine the existence of tripled fixed point results for the tripled symmetry system of fractional hybrid delay differential equations. We obtain results which support the existence of at least one solution to our system by applying hybrid fixed point theory. Similar types of stability analysis are presented, including Ulam–Hyers, generalized Ulam–Hyers, Ulam–Hyers–Rassias, and generalized Ulam–Hyers–Rassias. The necessary stipulations for obtaining the solution to our proposed problem are established.     Communicating in a Socially-Aware Network: Impact of Relationship Types

    Communication networks are linked to and influenced by human interactions. Socially aware systems should integrate these complex relationship patterns in the network design. This paper studies the impact of friendship and antagonistic relationships between individuals on optimal network propagation policies. We develop a network propagation model for signed networks and determine the optimal policies to influence a target node with an opinion while minimizing the total number of persons against it. We also provide extensions to this problem to elaborate on the impact of network parameters, such as minimum-delay propagation, while limiting the number of persons influenced against the idea before reaching the target. We provide numerical evaluations in a synthetic setup as well as the Epinions online social dataset. We demonstrate that propagation schemes with social and influence-centric constraints should take into account the relationship types in network design

    ASSESSMENT OF VITAMIN D THERAPY EFFECT ON INFLAMMATORY MARKERS IN PEDIATRIC PATIENTS WITH TYPE I DIABETIC

    Objective: The objective of this study is to estimate the effect of Vitamin D3 supplementation on endogenous Vitamin D3 level and inflammatory biomarkers in newly diagnosed pediatric patients.Methods: The patients were given oral Vitamin D3, and they divided into three groups: The first group (25 healthy pediatrics), the second group (25 newly diagnosed pediatric patients) treated with daily insulin regimen only, and the third group (25 newly diagnosed pediatric patients) treated with Vitamin D3 (2000 IU/day) with daily insulin regimen; all patients were treated for 90 days; and blood samples were taken at baseline and after 45 days and 90 days of starting Vitamin D3 to assess its potential effect on the levels of Vitamin D, serum calcium, serum alkaline phosphatase levels, and other inflammatory markers.Results: The results of the current study showed that serum IL-1β significantly declined in patients receiving Vitamin D3, while serum Vitamin D3, serum calcium, and interleukins-4 were significantly increased in patients receiving Vitamin D3.Conclusion: Vitamin D3 in a daily dose of 2000 IU/day for 90 days results in favorable immune response and increase of serum Vitamin D3 for pediatric new diagnosed Type 1 diabetes mellitus patients

    Sponge media drying using a swirling fluidized bed dryer

    Surface preparation today has seen the introduction of sponge media as an alternative product against the traditionally used abrasive materials. Being soft and elastic, the sponge media reduces air borne emission significantly during surface preparation with capability to be re-used. However the environmental conditions limit the sponge media usage whereby wet surroundings prohibit the re-use of the sponge without being dried properly. This study proposes the swirling fluidized bed dryer as a novel drying technique for sponge media. Batch experiments were conducted to study the bed’s hydrodynamics followed by drying studies for three bed loadings of 0.5 kg, 0.75 kg and 1.0 kg at three drying temperatures of 80°C, 90°C and 100°C. It was found that, minimum fluidization velocities for the wet sponge particles were found to be 1.342, 1.361 and 1.382 m/s with minimum swirling velocities of 1.400, 1.469 and 1.526 m/s. Drying times were recorded between 6 to 16 minutes depending on bed loading and drying temperature. Smaller bed weights exhibits faster drying with constant-rate drying period while higher drying temperature and larger bed load resulted in falling-rate drying period. Thin layer modelling for the falling-rate region indicates that Verma et. al model provides the best fit for the present experimental data with coefficient of determination, R2 = 0.98773, root mean square error, RMSE = 0.05048, residuals = 0.3442 and reduced chi-square, χ2 = 0.00254. The effective diffusivity, Deff, for 0.5 kg bed load was found to be 3.454 x 10-9 m2/s and 1.751 x 10-9 m2/s for 0.75 kg bed load. In conclusion, SFBD was found to be a viable and efficient method in drying of sponge media for various industrial applications particularly surface preparation
