Field sources in a Lorentz symmetry breaking scenario with a single background vector
This paper is devoted to investigating the interactions between stationary
sources of the electromagnetic field, in a model which exhibits explicit
Lorentz-symmetry breaking due to the presence of a single background vector. We
focus on physical phenomena that emerge from this kind of breaking and which
have no counterpart in Maxwell Electrodynamics
Dirac Fermion Confinement in Graphene
We study the problem of Dirac fermion confinement in graphene in the presence
of a perpendicular magnetic field B. We show, analytically and numerically,
that confinement leads to anomalies in the electronic spectrum and to a
magnetic field dependent crossover from \sqrt{B}, characteristic of
Dirac-Landau level behavior, to linear in B behavior, characteristic of
confinement. This crossover occurs when the radius of the Landau level becomes
of the order of the width of the system. As a result, we show that the
Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations also change as a function of field, and lead to
a singular Landau plot. We show that our theory is in excellent agreement with
the experimental data.Comment: 4 pages, 6 figure
Voltage-driven quantum oscillations in graphene
We predict unusual (for non-relativistic quantum mechanics) electron states
in graphene, which are localized within a finite-width potential barrier. The
density of localized states in the sufficiently high and/or wide graphene
barrier exhibits a number of singularities at certain values of the energy.
Such singularities provide quantum oscillations of both the transport (e.g.,
conductivity) and thermodynamic properties of graphene - when increasing the
barrier height and/or width, similarly to the well-known Shubnikov-de-Haas
(SdH) oscillations of conductivity in pure metals. However, here the SdH-like
oscillations are driven by an electric field instead of the usual
magnetically-driven SdH-oscillations.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure

On the relation between Transversal and Longitudinal Scaling in Cities
Given that a group of cities follows a scaling law connecting urban population with socio-economic or infrastructural metrics (transversal scaling), should we expect that each city would follow the same behavior over time (longitudinal scaling)? This assumption has important policy implications, although rigorous empirical tests have been so far hindered by the lack of suitable data. Here, we advance the debate by looking into the temporal evolution of the scaling laws for 5507 municipalities in Brazil. We focus on the relationship between population size and two urban variables, GDP and water network length, analyzing the time evolution of the system of cities as well as their individual trajectory. We find that longitudinal (individual) scaling exponents are city-specific, but they are distributed around an average value that approaches to the transversal scaling exponent when the data are decomposed to eliminate external factors, and when we only consider cities with a sufficiently large growth rate. Such results give support to the idea that the longitudinal dynamics is a micro-scaling version of the transversal dynamics of the entire urban system. Finally, we propose a mathematical framework that connects the microscopic level to global behavior, and, in all analyzed cases, we find good agreement between theoretical prediction and empirical evidence
