VI dedicado a la narración de la historia de Italia durante el periodo 474-526. El texto se centra especialmente en el reinado de Teodorico, aunque incluye asimismo numerosas referencias a los gobernantes de la zona oriental del Imperio durante aquellos años. La traducción se acompaña de un breve comentario histórico y literario con la intención de dar una visión global del estado actual de las investigaciones que esta obra ha generado

    Intrinsic Moment of Inertia of Membranes as bounds for the mass gap of Yang-Mills Theories

    We obtain the precise condition on the potentials of Yang-Mills theories in 0+1 dimensions and D0 brane quantum mechanics ensuring the discretness of the spectrum. It is given in terms of a moment of inertia of the membrane. From it we obtain a bound for the mass gap of any D+1 Yang-Mills theory in the slow-mode regime. In particular we analyze the physical case D=3. The quantum mechanical behavior of the theories, concerning its spectrum, is determined by harmonic oscillators with frequencies given by the inertial tensor of the membrane. We find a class of quantum mechanic potential polynomials of any degree, with classical instabilities that at quantum level have purely discrete spectrum.Comment: 12pages, Latex, minor changes, more explanatory comment

    Cluster Masses Accounting for Structure along the Line of Sight

    Weak gravitational lensing of background galaxies by foreground clusters offers an excellent opportunity to measure cluster masses directly without using gas as a probe. One source of noise which seems difficult to avoid is large scale structure along the line of sight. Here I show that, by using standard map-making techniques, one can minimize the deleterious effects of this noise. The resulting uncertainties on cluster masses are significantly smaller than when large scale structure is not properly accounted for, although still larger than if it was absent altogether.Comment: 5 pages, 5 figure

    Effects of salvage logging on soil properties and vegetation recovery in a fire-affected Mediterranean forest: A two year monitoring research

    Post-firemanagement can have an additional impact on the ecosystem; in somecases, evenmore severe than the fire. Salvage logging (SL) is a common practice in most fire-affected areas. The management of burnt wood can determine microclimatic conditions and seriously affect soil properties. In some cases, the way of doing it, using heavy machinery, and the vulnerability of soils to erosion and degradation can make this management potentially aggressive to soil. Research was done in “Sierra de Mariola Natural Park” (E Spain). A forest fire (N500 ha) occurred in July 2012. In February 2013, SL treatment was applied in a part of the affected forest. Plots for monitoring this effect were installed in this area and in a similar nearby area where no treatment was done, used as control (C). Soil samplings were done immediately after treatment and every 6 months during two years. Some soil properties were analysed, including organic matter (OM) content, nitrogen (N) available phosphorous (P) basal soil respiration (BSR), microbial biomass carbon (Cmic), bulk density (BD),water repellency (WR), aggregate stability (AS) and field capacity (FC). SL treatment caused an increase in BD, a decrease of AS, FC, OMand N. In the control area, in general the soil properties remained constant across the 2 years of monitoring, and the microbial parameters (BSR and Cmic), initially affected by the fire, recovered faster in C than in the SL area. Plant recovery also showed some differences between treatments. No significant differenceswere observed in the number of plant species recorded (richness) comparing C versus SL plots, but the number of individuals of each species (evenness)was significantly higher in C plots.     Acoustic assessment and distribution of the main pelagic fish species in ICES Subdivision 9a South during the ECOCADIZ-RECLUTAS 2020-10 Spanish survey (October 2020)

    The present working document summarises the main results obtained from the ECOCADIZ-RECLUTAS 2020-10 Spanish (pelagic ecosystem-) acoustic-trawl survey conducted by IEO between 02nd and 21st October 2020 in the Portuguese and Spanish shelf waters (20-200 m isobaths) off the Gulf of Cadiz (GoC) onboard the R/V Ramón Margalef. The survey’s main objective is the acoustic assessment of anchovy and sardine juveniles (age 0 fish) in the GoC recruitment areas. The 21 foreseen acoustic transects were sampled. A total of 22 valid fishing hauls were carried out for echo-trace ground-truthing purposes. Chub mackerel, anchovy, mackerel and sardine were the most frequent captured species in the fishing hauls, followed by bogue, horse mackerel, Mediterranean horse mackerel and blue jack mackerel. Boarfish, longspine snipefish and pearlside showed an incidental occurrence in the hauls performed in the surveyed area. Sardine, anchovy, chub mackerel and mackerel showed the highest yields. Total and regional estimates of total NASC allocated to the “pelagic fish species assemblage” in this survey become the historical records in their time-series. Such estimates are the result of the relatively high acoustic contributions of sardine (both in Portuguese and Spanish waters), anchovy (in Spanish waters), and chub mackerel (in Portuguese waters). GoC anchovy was widely distributed in the surveyed area, although higher densities were recorded between east of Cape Santa Maria and Bay of Cadiz. Anchovy acoustic estimates in autumn 2020, 36 070 t and 3197 million fish, showed a decrease in relation to the historical peak recorded the last year, but they were either close (abundance) or even higher (biomass) than the time-series average. The population was composed by fishes not older than 3 years. As usual, the bulk of the population, including juveniles, was located in Spanish waters. Age-0 anchovies accounted for 75% (2385 million) and 58% (21 060 t) of the total estimated abundance and biomass, respectively. Age-0 estimates experienced a similar decreasing trend than the one showed by the whole population in relation to the historical peak recorded the year before, but with values close to the time-series average. GoC sardine experienced a huge increase in autumn 2020, rising up to its time-series maximum and yielding 208 400 t and 5451 million fish, with similar regional contributions to the population and with the juveniles being located in the Spanish coastal waters. Age-6 group was the oldest age group in the population, although the occurrence of fishes older than 4 years was incidental. The population was mainly composed by fishes belonging to the age-0 to age-2 groups. Juvenile sardines (age-0 group) were the dominant group, accounting for 45% and 24% of the total abundance (2454 million) and biomass (49 259 t), respectively. This age-group also recorded its historical maximum in 2020. Chub mackerel estimates were of 22 918 t and 295 million fish, representing a slight decrease compared with the last year, but still above the time-series average. The population was composed by fishes not older than 3 years, with the age-1 group being the dominant one (73%, 216 million, and 75%, 17 082 t, of the total abundance and biomass). Age-0 fish was the second most important age group in the estimated population (17%, 51 million fish, and 12%, 2759 t, of the total abundance and biomass estimates). The survey suffered a ten-day delay in relation to the usual starting dates. The survey’s main objective is the acoustic assessment of anchovy and sardine juveniles (age 0 fish) in the GoC recruitment areas. The 21 foreseen acoustic transects were sampled. A total of 18 valid fishing hauls were carried out for echo-trace ground-truthing purposes. Chub mackerel, anchovy and sardine were the most frequent captured species in the fishing hauls, followed by horse mackerel, bogue, Atlantic mackerel, Mediterranean horse mackerel and blue jack mackerel. Boarfish, longspine snipefish and pearlside showed an incidental occurrence in the hauls performed in the surveyed area. Sardine and chub mackerel showed the highest yields in these hauls, followed by anchovy and Mediterranean horse mackerel. Total and Spanish estimates of total NASC allocated to the “pelagic fish species assemblage” in this survey showed lower values than those recorded last year, whereas the Portuguese estimates showed an increasing trend. GoC anchovy was widely distributed in the surveyed area, although avoided the easternmost waters. Higher densities were recorded between Alfanzina and west of Cape Santa Maria, in the Algarve, and between Isla Cristina and Bay of Cadiz. Anchovy acoustic estimates in autumn 2021, 17 512 t and 1973 million fish, experienced 38% and 51% decreases in abundance and biomass, respectively, in relation to the last year’s autumn estimates and they were lower than their time-series averages. The population was composed by fishes not older than 2 years. As usual, the bulk of the population, including juveniles, was located in Spanish waters. Age-0 anchovies accounted for 83% (1629 million) and 69% (12 063 t) of the total estimated abundance and biomass, respectively. Age-0 estimates experienced a similar decreasing trend than the one showed by the whole population in relation to the historical peak recorded in 2019, but with values close to the time-series average. GoC sardine was widely distributed all over the surveyed area (also avoiding the easternmost waters) and recorded a relatively high acoustic echo-integration in autumn 2021 as a consequence of the occurrence of dense mid-water schools in the Algarve coastal and inner shelf waters (20-78 m). Abundance (2986 million fish) and biomass (151 320 t) estimates were the second historical records within its respective series, although they represented 83% and 38% decreases in relation to the last year’s estimates. GoC sardine population was mainly concentrated in Portuguese waters. Age-5 group was the oldest age group in the population, although the occurrence of fishes older than 4 years was incidental. The population was mainly composed by fishes belonging to the age-0 to age-2 groups. Juvenile sardines (age-0 group) were not the dominant group, accounting for 21% (638 million) and 9% (12 854 t) of the total abundance and biomass, respectively. The bulk of this juvenile fraction was recorded in Spanish coastal waters. Chub mackerel was also widely distributed in the surveyed area, but showing higher densities in three between Cape San Vicente and Mazagón. Chub mackerel estimates were of 13 115 t and 106 million fish, accounting for 64% and 43% strong decreases in relation to the estimates in the previous year and with the above values being lower than their time-series average. The population was mainly concentrated in Portuguese waters and it was composed by fishes not older than 5 years, with the age-1 group being the dominant one. Age-0 fish was the second most important age group in the estimated population ((24%, 26 million fish, and 13%, 1689 t, of the total abundance and biomass estimates). The bulk of the age-0 and age-1 groups were recorded in the Portuguese waters, whereas older age-groups were more frequent in Spanish waters

    A computerized analysis of the entire retinal ganglion cell population and its spatial distribution in adult rats

    AbstractIn adult albino (SD) and pigmented (PVG) rats the entire population of retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) was quantified and their spatial distribution analyzed using a computerized technique. RGCs were back-labelled from the optic nerves (ON) or the superior colliculi (SCi) with Fluorogold (FG). Numbers of RGCs labelled from the ON [SD: 82,818±3,949, n=27; PVG: 89,241±3,576, n=6) were comparable to those labelled from the SCi [SD: 81,486±4,340, n=37; PVG: 87,229±3,199; n=59].     Objetivos: Realizar un análisis dosimétrico y comparar los resultados con las dosis de referencia de la colocación de endoprótesis autoexpandibles en el tratamiento de obstrucciones de colon y evaluar los efectos no estocásticos derivados de la radiación. Material y métodos: Estudio descriptivo restrospectivo unicéntrico de 109 pro-cedimientos de colocación de endoprótesis autoexpandibles de colon. Incluye todas las obstrucciones de colon, la mayoría de causa maligna y alguna de causa benigna. Se realiza un análisis dosimétrico, comparándolo con las dosis de refe-rencia y un seguimiento para evaluar complicaciones. Resultados: El tiempo medio de intervención fue de 55,84 minutos y el produc-to kermaa por área medio de 339600,64 mGy.cm². Se observó una correlación estadísticamente significativa entre dichas variables y el grado de complejidad de la intervención. Los valores obtenidos fueron superiores a los valores de refe-rencia. Solo en un 8,3 % de los pacientes que superaron el umbral de kerma se observaron complicaciones dérmicas. Conclusiones: Esta intervención supone un tiempo de fluoroscopia y dosis de radiación considerable, observando una correlación estadísticamente significativa según el grado de dificultad de la intervención. Los radiólogos intervencionistas toman gran conciencia del problema, adoptando todas las medidas preventivas necesarias para lograr el éxito con la mínima dosis de radiación posible. En la mayoría de los casos, los beneficios clínicos y la mejora en la calidad de vida del paciente justifican el riesgo de la radiación. A pesar de las altas dosis recibidas, la incidencia de efectos no estocásticos es mínima

    Effects of dietary curcumin in growth performance, oxidative status and gut morphometry and function of gilthead seabream postlarvae

    An imbalance in the production and detoxification of reactive oxygen species and other oxidants can disrupt a l l types of cellular compounds, and lead to a state of oxidative stress. Preventing this state is essential to improve growth and health in animal production. Therefore, the aim of this work was to assess i f the dieta r y supple-mentation of curcumin cou l d improve the antioxidant status and intestine structu r e and functionalit y of gilthead seabream postlarvae, with the global objective of improving fish growth performance and robustness. Two experimental diets supplemented with different doses of curcumin (LOW and HIGH diets), and a commercial diet were fed to quadruplicate groups of postlarvae, for 20 days. At the end of the feeding trial fish fed the supple-mented diets significantly improved their antioxidant status compared to CTRL fed fish. LOW and HIGH fed fish presented lower protein oxidative damage (P 0.05). In conclusion, dieta r y curcumin supplementation was able to enhance gilthead seabream postlarvae robustness through a modulation of the oxidative status, increasing total antioxidant capacity and decreasing protein oxidative damage. This data pro-vide evidence that curcumin can be a suitable feed additive to promote heath status and robustness of fish at early stages of development, therefore contributing for the development and sustainabilit y of marine fish hatchery production.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
