Pregnancy with anti-PP1Pk antibody managed with prednisolone and low-molecular-weight heparin – A case report and literature review

    Get PDF
The anti-PP1Pk is a rare antibody associated with recurrent miscarriages, mainly in the first half of pregnancy. There seems to be a direct correlation between the antibody titer and risk of miscarriage. As this is a rare entity, few case reports have been published. The most frequently proposed therapeutic approaches are doublefiltration plasmapheresis and plasma exchange therapy. The rationale behind them is to remove the cytotoxic antibodies from maternal circulation. Here, we present the case of a 30-year-old woman with a history of two spontaneous miscarriages and a pre-conception anti-PP1Pk antibody titer of 1:4. As soon as she became pregnant, she was placed on prednisolone and low-molecular-weight heparin (LMWH). Biweekly antibody titers were performed throughout the entire gestation and remained below 1:16. As the titers were considered to be low, plasmapheresis was not performed. The pregnancy was uneventful and she delivered a healthy newborn child at 37 weeks of gestation, with no signs of anaemia.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Bacteria associated with insects can have a substantial impact on the biology and life cycle of their host. The checkerboard DNA-DNA hybridization technique is a semi-quantitative technique that has been previously employed in odontology to detect and quantify a variety of bacterial species in dental samples. Here we tested the applicability of the checkerboard DNA-DNA hybridization technique to detect the presence of <it>Aedes aegypti</it>-associated bacterial species in larvae, pupae and adults of <it>A. aegypti</it>.</p> <p>Findings</p> <p>Using the checkerboard DNA-DNA hybridization technique we could detect and estimate the number of four bacterial species in total DNA samples extracted from <it>A. aegypti </it>single whole individuals and midguts. <it>A. aegypti </it>associated bacterial species were also detected in the midgut of four other insect species, <it>Lutzomyia longipalpis, Drosophila melanogaster</it>, <it>Bradysia hygida </it>and <it>Apis mellifera</it>.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Our results demonstrate that the checkerboard DNA-DNA hybridization technique can be employed to study the microbiota composition of mosquitoes. The method has the sensitivity to detect bacteria in single individuals, as well as in a single organ, and therefore can be employed to evaluate the differences in bacterial counts amongst individuals in a given mosquito population. We suggest that the checkerboard DNA-DNA hybridization technique is a straightforward technique that can be widely used for the characterization of the microbiota in mosquito populations.</p

Antimicrobial activity of silver nanoparticles synthesized by the fungus Curvularia inaequalis

Silver nanoparticles have been widely reported in literature due to their vast industrial application in different areas. In this work, we explored a simple procedure for the biosynthesis of silver nanoparticles at room temperature from the action of Curvularia inaequalis as reduction agent. The degree of aggregation and size of biosynthesized particles were optimized from a factorial design involving combined variation of three different parameters of preparation. The resulting colloidal dispersion of silver nanoparticles presented strong antimicrobial activity against Escherichia coli and Klebsiella pneumoniae in an indication that C. inaequalis represents a new potential candidate for alternative biosynthesis of silver nanoparticles with antimicrobial activity. Keywords: Antimicrobial activity, fungi, silver nanoparticlesAfrican Journal of Biotechnology Vol. 12(20), pp. 2917-292

An Association of Multiple Well Differentiated Liposarcomas, Lipomatous Tissue and Hereditary Retinoblastoma

Well differentiated liposarcoma (atypical lipomatous tumour) is a low grade tumour, with no metastatic potential unless dedifferentiation supervenes. When superficial, it recurs locally only occasionally after marginal excision. We present a patient in whom bilateral childhood retinoblastoma was followed by later development of massive confluent areas of low grade liposarcoma and lipomatous tissue affecting the upper extremities and trunk. We discuss the role of mutations in the retinoblastoma gene (RB1) in linking these conditions and demonstrate the surgical management of an extremely unusual and challenging case

INTERFERON BETA-1A TREATMENT IN HTLV-1-ASSOCIATED MYELOPATHY/TROPICAL SPASTIC PARAPARESIS: A CASE REPORT

Here a young patient (< 21 years of age) with a history of infective dermatitis is described. The patient was diagnosed with myelopathy associated with HTLV-1/tropical spastic paraparesis and treated with interferon beta-1a. The disease was clinically established as HTLV-1-associated myelopathy/tropical spastic paraparesis (HAM/TSP), and laboratory tests confirmed the presence of antibodies to HTLV-1 in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). Mumps, cytomegalovirus, Epstein-Barr virus, schistosomiasis, herpes virus 1 and 2, rubella, measles, varicella-zoster toxoplasmosis, hepatitis, HIV, and syphilis were excluded by serology. The patient was diagnosed with neurogenic bladder and presented with nocturia, urinary urgency, paresthesia of the lower left limb, a marked reduction of muscle strength in the lower limbs, and a slight reduction in upper limb strength. During the fourth week of treatment with interferon beta-1a, urinary urgency and paresthesia disappeared and clinical motor skills improved

Spatial point analysis based on dengue surveys at household level in central Brazil

<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Dengue virus (DENV) affects nonimunne human populations in tropical and subtropical regions. In the Americas, dengue has drastically increased in the last two decades and Brazil is considered one of the most affected countries. The high frequency of asymptomatic infection makes difficult to estimate prevalence of infection using registered cases and to locate high risk intra-urban area at population level. The goal of this spatial point analysis was to identify potential high-risk intra-urban areas of dengue, using data collected at household level from surveys.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Two household surveys took place in the city of Goiania (~1.1 million population), Central Brazil in the year 2001 and 2002. First survey screened 1,586 asymptomatic individuals older than 5 years of age. Second survey 2,906 asymptomatic volunteers, same age-groups, were selected by multistage sampling (census tracts; blocks; households) using available digital maps. Sera from participants were tested by dengue virus-specific IgM/IgG by EIA. A Generalized Additive Model (GAM) was used to detect the spatial varying risk over the region. Initially without any fixed covariates, to depict the overall risk map, followed by a model including the main covariates and the year, where the resulting maps show the risk associated with living place, controlled for the individual risk factors. This method has the advantage to generate smoothed risk factors maps, adjusted by socio-demographic covariates.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The prevalence of antibody against dengue infection was 37.3% (95%CI [35.5–39.1]) in the year 2002; 7.8% increase in one-year interval. The spatial variation in risk of dengue infection significantly changed when comparing 2001 with 2002, (ORadjusted = 1.35; p < 0.001), while controlling for potential confounders using GAM model. Also increasing age and low education levels were associated with dengue infection.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>This study showed spatial heterogeneity in the risk areas of dengue when using a spatial multivariate approach in a short time interval. Data from household surveys pointed out that low prevalence areas in 2001 surveys shifted to high-risk area in consecutive year. This mapping of dengue risks should give insights for control interventions in urban areas.</p
