    Non-Deterministic Functions as Non-Deterministic Processes

We study encodings of the ?-calculus into the ?-calculus in the unexplored case of calculi with non-determinism and failures. On the sequential side, we consider ?^?_?, a new non-deterministic calculus in which intersection types control resources (terms); on the concurrent side, we consider ??, a ?-calculus in which non-determinism and failure rest upon a Curry-Howard correspondence between linear logic and session types. We present a typed encoding of ?^?_? into ?? and establish its correctness. Our encoding precisely explains the interplay of non-deterministic and fail-prone evaluation in ?^?_? via typed processes in ??. In particular, it shows how failures in sequential evaluation (absence/excess of resources) can be neatly codified as interaction protocols

    Termination in Concurrency, Revisited

Termination is a central property in sequential programming models: a term is terminating if all its reduction sequences are finite. Termination is also important in concurrency in general, and for message-passing programs in particular. A variety of type systems that enforce termination by typing have been developed. In this paper, we rigorously compare several type systems for π\pi-calculus processes from the unifying perspective of termination. Adopting session types as reference framework, we consider two different type systems: one follows Deng and Sangiorgi's weight-based approach; the other is Caires and Pfenning's Curry-Howard correspondence between linear logic and session types. Our technical results precisely connect these very different type systems, and shed light on the classes of client/server interactions they admit as correct

Types and Terms Translated:Unrestricted Resources in Encoding Functions as Processes

Type-preserving translations are effective rigorous tools in the study of core programming calculi. In this paper, we develop a new typed translation that connects sequential and concurrent calculi; it is governed by type systems that control resource consumption. Our main contribution is the source language, a new resource λ-calculus with non-collapsing non-determinism and failures, dubbed uλ^{↯}_{⊕}. In uλ^{↯}_{⊕}, resources are split into linear and unrestricted; failures are explicit and arise from this distinction. We define a type system based on intersection types to control resources and fail-prone computation. The target language is 𝗌Ï€, an existing session-typed Ï€-calculus that results from a Curry-Howard correspondence between linear logic and session types. Our typed translation subsumes our prior work; interestingly, it treats unrestricted resources in uλ^{↯}_{⊕} as client-server session behaviours in 𝗌Ï€

Animal Performance and Productivity of a New Cultivar of \u3cem\u3eBrachiaria brizantha\u3c/em\u3e

Brazil has the competitive advantage of a very dynamic and cost-effective animal production system on pastures over other countries. The pursuit of more productive forages that will result in higher quality beef at a lower cost is justified. As Brachiaria is the most important forage genus utilised in Brazil, an intense search for new cultivars amongst collected and introduced ecotypes from Africa is underway. Following agronomic evaluation of this material in plots, 8 Brachiaria ecotypes were pre-selected. As part of Embrapa`s process of cultivar development, B. brizantha cv. Xaraés, characterised by high productivity (liveweight gain/area), was released in 2003, followed in 2007 by cv. Piatã, characterised by high nutritive value and consequently high animal performance (Euclides et al. 2009). From the 8 ecotypes pre-selected, one presented good traits for surviving dry periods (Euclides et al. 2001), which is the main constraint to herbage production under tropical and subtropical conditions. This study aimed to evaluate this ecotype under grazing conditions

Modulation Of The Catalytic Activity Of Porphyrins By Lipid- And Surfactant-containing Nanostructures

    Get PDF
The structural factors modulating porphyrin activity encompass pyrrole and equatorial ligands, as well as the central metal and the number and structure of their axial ligands. Of equal importance is the microenvironment provided by apoproteins, solvents and membranes. Porphyrins are often used to construct supramolecular structures with different applications. The modulation of activity of the porphyrins has been frequently achieved by mimicking nature, i.e., by the provision of different microenvironments for these molecules. The association of porphyrins to surfactant- and lipid-containing nanostructures has changed the activity of these compounds to mimic different enzymes such as SOD, cytochrome P450, peroxidases and others. In determined conditions, the reactive forms of the porphyrins are high-valence states of oxo-metal-π cations and oxo-metal produced by the reaction with peroxides and peracids. The modulation of porphyrin activity by surfactant- and lipid-containing nanostructures has also been achieved for hemeproteins, as the lipid nanostructures affect the conformation of proteins. ©2011 Sociedade Brasileira de Química.22916211633Drain, C.M., Varotto, A., Radivojevic, I., (2009) Chem.
