    Effective data collection scheme for real-spatial group communication over hybrid infra-ad hoc wireless networks

    This paper presents an effective data collection scheme to provide group communications among appropriate members selected by each user’s geographic situation and preference (real-spatial information). When each user directly notifies central servers of user’s information via wireless network infrastructure (Wi-infra), message delivery latency and losses drastically increase due to the network congestion. Therefore, we employ representative nodes (RNs) selected in a distributed manner. The RN first collects the real-spatial information from neighboring nodes via an ad hoc network and then notifies the server via Wi-infra. From simulation experiments, our scheme can drastically reduce both message delivery latency and losses

    A Study of Leadership Required for Young Researcher

    The objective of this paper is to investigate the leadership of young researchers. In recent years, career formation support for young researchers is being developed. In this research, to support young researchers' various career options, interview was conducted to 15 active leaders across different fields and ages. We asked questions about 1) attitudes and behaviors necessary for leaders, 2) abilities that helped to take on the current leading position, and 3) ability required for young researchers. The responses from the interview can be summarized as "the necessary attitude and behavior", "the useful skill", and "the required condition." Among all these responses, common ideas such as "the mission and vision", "the humility", and "the foundation of inter-personal relationship" can be pointed out in this research

    Experimental Evaluation of Publish/Subscribe-based Spatio-Temporal Contents Management on Geo-Centric Information Platform

    Cross-domain data fusion is becoming a key driver to growth of the numerous and diverse applications in IoT era. Nevertheless, IoT data obtained by individual devices are blindly transmitted to cloud servers. We here focus on that the IoT data which are suitable for cross-domain data fusion, tend to be generated in the proximity, and thus propose a Geo-Centric Information Platform (GCIP) for the management of Spatio-Temporal Contents (STCs) generated through the cross-domain data fusion. GCIP enables to keep STCs near the users (at an edge server). In this paper, we practically examine the fundamental functions of the GCIP from two aspects: (1) Geo-location aware data collection and (2) Publish/Subscribe-based STC production. Furthermore, we implement a proof-of-concepts (PoC) of GCIP and conduct experiments on a real IPv6 network built on our campus network. In this experiment, we showed that multiple types of IoT data generated in the proximity can be collected on the edge server and then a STC can be produced by exploiting the collected IoT data.     Matching based content discovery method on Geo-Centric Information Platform

    We have proposed a concept of new information platform, Geo-Centric information platform (GCIP), that enables IoT data fusion based on geolocation. GCIP produces new and dynamic contents by combining cross-domain data in each geographic area and provides them to users. In this environment, it is difficult to find appropriate contents requested by a user because the user cannot recognize what contents are created in each area beforehand. In this paper, we propose a content discovery method for GCIP. This method evaluates the relevancy between topics specified in user requests and topics representing IoT data used for creating contents, called matching, and presents the candidates for the desired contents based on the relevancy.     Experimental periodontal disease treatment by subgingival irrigation with tetracycline hydrochloride in rats

    OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to compare subgingival irrigation with tetracycline hydrochloride (TTC-HCL) as adjunctive treatment to scaling and root planning (SRP) on induced periodontitis in rats. MATERIAL AND METHODS: In 60 rats, periodontal disease was ligature-induced at the mandibular left first molar. After 7 days, the ligature was removed and all animals were submitted to SRP, and divided into 2 groups according to the following treatment: C (n=30) - subgingival irrigation with 1 mL of saline; T (n=30) - subgingival irrigation with 1 mL of TTC-HCL (50 mg/mL).     We examained the contribution of iron to the cytotoxicity of tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-a combined with actinomycin D (ActD) as a model of hepatocyte injury in Hep G2 cells. In general,hepatocytes are resistant to TNF-a. However,a transcriptional inhibitor such as ActD can sensitize then to TNF-a. In the present study, we show that low levels of ActD (0.5nM) sensitized HepG2 cells to the cytotoxic effects of TNF-a (20 ng/mL) for 48h. Iron plays a critical role in catalyxing the formation of potent oxidants. To acsses the toxicological significance of this TNF-a/ActD interaction,ferric-nitrilotriacetate (Fe-NTA,2uM) was added to the cells. Treatment with Fe-NTA significantly increased the sensitivity to the TNF-a/ActD-mediated cell death. TNF-a/ActD-mediated cell death in the presence of a lower concentration of iron did not result in DNA fragmentation. We suggest that iron increased the sensitivity to the cytotoxicity of TNF-a/ActD in HepG2 cells. It is likely that TNF-a/ActD/Fe-NTA-mediated cell death contributes to the non-apoptotic death of cells via oxidative stress caused by iron. Our experimental model may be useful for studying hepatic drug metabolism using TNF-a as a hepatocyte injury,especially in HepG2 cells

    Students’ Perspectives on Use Behaviour of Learning Management Systems in Sri Lankan Universities

    This research aims to explore the perceptions of students in using Learning Management System (LMS) in order to enhance the learning process of undergraduates in government universities in Sri Lanka.Many universities in Sri Lanka have implemented LMS to make their learning interactive and engaging.These institutions have made considerable amount of investments in terms of finance and other resources but the benefits enjoyed are far below expectations.Hence, it is of high recognition that a study is very much needed to understand the reason(s) for such low usage in Sri Lankan free education context. Quantitative study based on self-administered questionnaire survey was conducted.Out of the 15 government universities in Sri Lanka, 03 were selected. Results from 344 valid responses reveals that Attitude, Experience and Anxiety significantly influence the students’ use behaviour of LMS in Sri Lankan universities, while Efficacy and Collaboration do not have any impact. The research identifies what factors would influence these students’ use behaviour of LMS in state universities. Variables Students’ Attitude towards LMS, Efficacy, Experience, Anxiety and Collaboration with Lecturers and Students are considered to be the predictor variables and their influence and impact on Use Behaviour of LMS (predicted variable) is studied

    MFG-E8 Regulates the Immunogenic Potential of Dendritic Cells Primed with Necrotic Cell-Mediated Inflammatory Signals

    Dendritic cells (DC) manipulate tissue homeostasis by recognizing dying cells and controlling immune functions. However, the precise mechanisms by which DC recognize different types of dying cells and devise distinct immunologic consequences remain largely obscure. Herein, we demonstrate that Milk-fat globule-EGF VIII (MFG-E8) is a critical mediator controlling DC immunogenicity in inflammatory microenvironments. MFG-E8 restrains DC-mediated uptake and recognition of necrotic cells. The MFG-E8-mediated suppression of necrotic cell uptake by DC resulted in the decreased proinflammatory cytokines production and activated signal components such as STAT3 and A20, which are critical to maintain tolerogenic properties of DC. Furthermore, the DC-derived MFG-E8 negatively regulates the cross-priming and effector functions of antigen-specific T cells upon recognition of necrotic cells. MFG-E8 deficiency enhances an ability of necrotic cell-primed DC to stimulate antitumor immune responses against established tumors. Our findings define what we believe to a novel mechanism whereby MFG-E8 regulates the immunogenicity of DC by modulating the modes of recognition of dying cells. Manipulating MFG-E8 levels in DC may serve as a useful strategy for controlling inflammatory microenvironments caused by various pathological conditions including cancer and autoimmunity
