Climate change and water resources in arid regions : uncertainty of the baseline time period
Recent climate change studies have given a lot of attention to the uncertainty that stems from general circulation models (GCM), greenhouse gas emission scenarios, hydrological models and downscaling approaches. Yet, the uncertainty that stems from the selection of the baseline period has not been studied. Accordingly, the main research question is as follows: What would be the differences and/or the similarities in the evaluation of climate change impacts between the GCM and the delta perturbation scenarios using different baseline periods? This article addresses this issue through comparison of the results of two different baseline periods, investigating the uncertainties in evaluating climate change impact on the hydrological characteristics of arid regions. The Lower Zab River Basin (Northern Iraq) has been selected as a representative case study. The research outcomes show that the considered baseline periods suggest increases and decreases in the temperature and precipitation (P), respectively, over the 2020, 2050 and 2080 periods. The two climatic scenarios are likely to lead to similar reductions in the reservoir mean monthly flows, and subsequently, their maximum discharge is approximately identical. The predicted reduction in the inflow for the 2080–2099 time period fluctuates between 31 and 49% based on SRA1B and SRA2 scenarios, respectively. The delta perturbation scenario permits the sensitivity of the climatic models to be clearly determined compared to the GCM. The former allows for a wide variety of likely climate change scenarios at the regional level and are easier to generate and apply so that they could complement the latter
In-situ upgrading of Napier grass pyrolysis vapour over microporous and hierarchical mesoporous zeolites
This study presents in-situ upgrading of pyrolysis
vapour derived from Napier grass over microporous and
mesoporous ZSM-5 catalysts. It evaluates effect of process
variables such catalyst–biomass ratio and catalyst type in
a vertical fixed bed pyrolysis system at 600 °C, 50 °C/min
under 5 L/min nitrogen flow. Increasing catalyst–biomass
ratio during the catalytic process with microporous structure
reduced production of organic phase bio-oil by approximately
7.0 wt%. Using mesoporous catalyst promoted
nearly 4.0 wt% higher organic yield relative to microporous
catalyst, which translate to only about 3.0 wt% reduction
in organic phase compared to the yield of organic phase
from non-catalytic process. GC–MS analysis of bio-oil
organic phase revealed maximum degree of deoxygenation
of about 36.9% with microporous catalyst compared to
the mesoporous catalysts, which had between 39 and 43%.
Mesoporous catalysts promoted production olefins and
alkanes, normal phenol, monoaromatic hydrocarbons while
microporous catalyst favoured the production of alkenes
and polyaromatic hydrocarbons. There was no significant increase in the production of normal phenols over microporous catalyst due to its inability to transform the methoxyphenols and methoxy aromatics. This study demonstrated that upgrading of Napier grass pyrolysis vapour over mesoporous ZSM-5 produced bio-oil with improved physicochemical properties
The use of medicinal plants in health care practices by Rohingya refugees in a degraded forest and conservation area of Bangladesh
People in developing countries traditionally rely on plants for their primary healthcare. This dependence is relatively higher in forests in remote areas due to the lack of access to modern health facilities and easy availability of the plant products.We carried out an ethno-medicinal survey in Teknaf Game Reserve (TGR), a heavily degraded forest and conservation area in southern Bangladesh, to explore the diversity of plants used by Rohingya refugees for treating various ailments. The study also documented the traditional utilization, collection and perceptions of medicinal plants by the Rohingyas residing on the edges of this conservation area. We collected primary information through direct observation and by interviewing older respondents using a semi-structured questionnaire. A total of 34 plant species in 28 families were frequently used by the Rohingyas to treat 45 ailments, ranging from simple headaches to highly complex eye and heart diseases. For medicinal preparations and treating various ailments, aboveground plant parts were used more than belowground parts. The collection of medicinal plants was mostly from the TGR. © 2009 Taylor & Francis
Adaptive multi-polling scheduler for QoS support of video transmission in IEEE 802.11e WLANs
The 802.11E Task Group has been established to enhance quality of service (QoS) provision for time-bounded services in the current IEEE 802.11 medium access control protocol. The QoS is introduced throughout hybrid coordination function controlled channel access (HCCA) for the rigorous QoS provision. In HCCA, the station is allocated a fixed transmission opportunity (TXOP) based on its TSPEC parameters so that it is efficient for constant bit rate streams. However, as the profile of variable bit rate traffics is inconstant, they are liable to experience a higher delay especially in bursty traffic case. In this paper, we present a dynamic TXOP assignment algorithm called adaptive multi-polling TXOP scheduling algorithm (AMTXOP) for supporting the video traffics transmission over IEEE 802.11e wireless networks. This scheme invests a piggybacked information about the size of the subsequent video frames of the uplink streams to assist the hybrid coordinator accurately assign the TXOP according to actual change in the traffic profile. The proposed scheduler is powered by integrating multi-polling scheme to further reduce the delay and polling overhead. Extensive simulation experiments have been carried out to show the efficiency of the AMTXOP over the existing schemes in terms of the packet delay and the channel utilization
Replication of Plasmodium in reticulocytes can occur without hemozoin formation, resulting in chloroquine resistance
Most studies on malaria-parasite digestion of hemoglobin (Hb) have been performed using P. falciparum maintained in mature erythrocytes, in vitro. In this study, we examine Plasmodium Hb degradation in vivo in mice, using the parasite P. berghei, and show that it is possible to create mutant parasites lacking enzymes involved in the initial steps of Hb proteolysis. These mutants only complete development in reticulocytes and mature into both schizonts and gametocytes. Hb degradation is severely impaired and large amounts of undigested Hb remains in the reticulocyte cytoplasm and in vesicles in the parasite. The mutants produce little or no hemozoin (Hz), the detoxification by-product of Hb degradation. Further, they are resistant to chloroquine, an antimalarial drug that interferes with Hz formation, but their sensitivity to artesunate, also thought to be dependent on Hb degradation, is retained. Survival in reticulocytes with reduced or absent Hb digestion may imply a novel mechanism of drug resistance. These findings have implications for drug development against human-malaria parasites, such as P. vivax and P. ovale, which develop inside reticulocytes
Sequencing of diverse mandarin, pummelo and orange genomes reveals complex history of admixture during citrus domestication
Cultivated citrus are selections from, or hybrids of, wild progenitor species whose identities and contributions to citrus domestication remain controversial. Here we sequence and compare citrus genomes-a high-quality reference haploid clementine genome and mandarin, pummelo, sweet-orange and sour-orange genomes-and show that cultivated types derive from two progenitor species. Although cultivated pummelos represent selections from one progenitor species, Citrus maxima, cultivated mandarins are introgressions of C. maxima into the ancestral mandarin species Citrus reticulata. The most widely cultivated citrus, sweet orange, is the offspring of previously admixed individuals, but sour orange is an F1 hybrid of pure C. maxima and C. reticulata parents, thus implying that wild mandarins were part of the early breeding germplasm. A Chinese wild 'mandarin' diverges substantially from C. reticulata, thus suggesting the possibility of other unrecognized wild citrus species. Understanding citrus phylogeny through genome analysis clarifies taxonomic relationships and facilitates sequence-directed genetic improvement. (Résumé d'auteur

Incidence and impact of acute urinary retention after robot-assisted radical prostatectomy.
ObjectiveTo explore the incidence of and potential risk factors for acute urine retention (AUR) after robot-assisted radical prostatectomy (RARP) and its effect on early urine continence.MethodsA retrospective analysis of patients who underwent RARP by a single surgeon between July 2016 and June 2017 was performed to assess the incidence of AUR and its effect on early continence. Continence was assessed through self-reported questionnaires completed approximately three months after surgery. Early urine continence was defined as using zero pads per day at the time of the three-month follow-up. Descriptive statistics and logistic regression analysis were used to assess independent predictor of AUR.ResultsOf 379 patients, 19 (5%) developed AUR after RARP. No significant difference in baseline characteristics between those who developed AUR post-RARP and those who did not. There was no statistically significant difference in the reported early continence and number of pads used per day between patients with AUR and patients without AUR (31.6% vs. 23.1%, P = 0.39), (1.6 vs. 1.4, P = 0.913), respectively.ConclusionAUR post-RARP is an infrequent postoperative complication with no impact on early continence rate. No patient-related factors were associated with the development of AUR
Establishing convergent validity of a medication literacy assessment instrument for use within the Nigerian setting
Purpose: To establish convergent validity of a previously designed medication literacy instrument for use in Nigeria.
Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted in Zaria, Kaduna State from May to August 2021, with structured instruments administered to conveniently sampled members of the public via one-on-one interviews to collect data. These instruments included a previously designed medication literacy assessment instrument and the Newest Vital Sign United Kingdom version (NVS-UK) health literacy assessment questionnaire. Data obtained was reported using descriptive and inferential statistics.
Results: Three hundred respondents were interviewed, majority of whom were females (51 %) and aged between 15 – 25 (76.6 %). The percentage of correct responses to the NVS-UK questions ranged from 22 to 58.3 %, while the total number of NVS-UK questions answered correctly by respondents ranged from 0 to 6 with a mean of 2.2 ± 1.7. Respondents’ NVS-UK scores were associated with their highest level of education completed (p = 0.001). The NVS-UK showed adequate internal consistency (Cronbach’s Alpha = 0.7) and validation of the developed medication literacy instrument against the NVS-UK demonstrated a Spearman’s rho correlation coefficient of 0.42.
Conclusion: The designed instrument is valid and can be used to assess medication literacy within the country
