    Task-based detectability in anatomical background in digital mammography, digital breast tomosynthesis and synthetic mammography.

    Objective.Determining the detectability of targets for the different imaging modalities in mammography in the presence of anatomical background noise is challenging. This work proposes a method to compare the image quality and detectability of targets in digital mammography (DM), digital breast tomosynthesis (DBT) and synthetic mammography.Approach. The low-frequency structured noise produced by a water phantom with acrylic spheres was used to simulate anatomical background noise for the different types of images. A method was developed to apply the non-prewhitening observer model with eye filter (NPWE) in these conditions. A homogeneous poly(methyl) methacrylate phantom with a 0.2 mm thick aluminium disc was used to calculate 2D in-plane modulation transfer function (MTF), noise power spectrum (NPS), noise equivalent quanta, and system detective quantum efficiency for 30, 50 and 70 mm thicknesses. The in-depth MTFs of DBT volumes were determined using a thin tungsten wire. The MTF, system NPS and anatomical NPS were used in the NPWE model to calculate the threshold gold thickness of the gold discs contained in the CDMAM phantom, which was taken as reference. Main results.The correspondence between the NPWE model and the CDMAM phantom (linear Pearson correlation 0.980) yielded a threshold detectability index that was used to determine the threshold diameter of spherical microcalcifications and masses. DBT imaging improved the detection of masses, which depended mostly on the reduction of anatomical background noise. Conversely, DM images yielded the best detection of microcalcifications.Significance.The method presented in this study was able to quantify image quality and object detectability for the different imaging modalities and levels of anatomical background noise

    A comprehensive model for x-ray projection imaging system efficiency and image quality characterization in the presence of scattered radiation.

    This work proposes a method for assessing the detective quantum efficiency (DQE) of radiographic imaging systems that include both the x-ray detector and the antiscatter device. Cascaded linear analysis of the antiscatter device efficiency (DQEASD) with the x-ray detector DQE is used to develop a metric of system efficiency (DQEsys); the new metric is then related to the existing system efficiency parameters of effective DQE (eDQE) and generalized DQE (gDQE). The effect of scatter on signal transfer was modelled through its point spread function (PSF), leading to an x-ray beam transfer function (BTF) that multiplies with the classical presampling modulation transfer function (MTF) to give the system MTF. Expressions are then derived for the influence of scattered radiation on signal-difference to noise ratio (SDNR) and contrast-detail (c-d) detectability. The DQEsys metric was tested using two digital mammography systems, for eight x-ray beams (four with and four without scatter), matched in terms of effective energy. The model was validated through measurements of contrast, SDNR and MTF for poly(methyl)methacrylate thicknesses covering the range of scatter fractions expected in mammography. The metric also successfully predicted changes in c-d detectability for different scatter conditions. Scatter fractions for the four beams with scatter were established with the beam stop method using an extrapolation function derived from the scatter PSF, and validated through Monte Carlo (MC) simulations. Low-frequency drop of the MTF from scatter was compared to both theory and MC calculations. DQEsys successfully quantified the influence of the grid on SDNR and accurately gave the break-even object thickness at which system efficiency was improved by the grid. The DQEsys metric is proposed as an extension of current detector characterization methods to include a performance evaluation in the presence of scattered radiation, with an antiscatter device in place

    Disparities in parental awareness of children's seasonal influenza vaccination recommendations and influencers of vaccination

    OBJECTIVE: To determine parental awareness of influenza vaccination recommendations for children and explore associations with awareness. DESIGN: Cross-sectional survey. SETTING/PARTICIPANTS: South Australian parents with a telephone listing in the Electronic White Pages were randomly selected. METHODS: Participants were interviewed using Computer Assisted Telephone Interviewing (CATI) during May-July 2016. Univariable and multivariable analyses explored characteristics associated with awareness; with the survey data weighted to reflect the population of SA and the probability of selection within a household. RESULTS: Of 539 parents, 33% were aware of the recommendation that all children (<5 years) should receive the influenza vaccine annually with 51.9% aware that children with special risk medical conditions (SRMC) should also receive the vaccine annually. Characteristics strongly associated with parental awareness of the recommendation for children aged < 5 years were knowledge of recommendation for children with a SRMC (adjusted Odds Ratio [aOR] 10.46, CI 4.44-24.63) or living in a metropolitan area (aOR 2.91, CI 1.19-7.09). There was lack of awareness in those not working (aOR 0.13, CI 0.04-0.47), with trade level education (compared with high school) (aOR 0.25 CI, 0.09-0.71) and in those born in the UK or Ireland (aOR 0.19, CI 0.04-0.85). Awareness of the recommendation for children with SRMC to receive the vaccine was strongly associated with knowledge of the influenza recommendation for children <5 years (aOR 10.22, CI 4.39-23.77) or not being born in Australia [UK/ Ireland (aOR 7.63, CI 1.86-31.31); other (aOR 3.93, CI 0.94-16.42)]. The most influential cues to future receipt were a general practitioner (GP) recommendation (63.8%) and providing influenza vaccine free for all children (37.6%). More parents who delayed or excluded vaccines believed that their children's vaccinations (in general) were unnecessary, as other children were vaccinated (42.8%) compared to those with no or minor concerns (11.1%) (p<0.0001). CONCLUSIONS: Parental awareness of children's influenza vaccine recommendations is low. Targeted communication strategies and resources are required to establish broader community awareness of recommendations. Healthcare provider endorsement of the vaccine remains key and health care professionals, particularly GPs and paediatric specialists should be encouraged to discuss influenza vaccine with parents at every opportunity.     Evidence of Color Coherence Effects in W+jets Events from ppbar Collisions at sqrt(s) = 1.8 TeV

    We report the results of a study of color coherence effects in ppbar collisions based on data collected by the D0 detector during the 1994-1995 run of the Fermilab Tevatron Collider, at a center of mass energy sqrt(s) = 1.8 TeV. Initial-to-final state color interference effects are studied by examining particle distribution patterns in events with a W boson and at least one jet. The data are compared to Monte Carlo simulations with different color coherence implementations and to an analytic modified-leading-logarithm perturbative calculation based on the local parton-hadron duality hypothesis.Comment: 13 pages, 6 figures.     Factors influencing scar formation following Bacille Calmette-Guérin (BCG) vaccination

    The prevalence of scar formation following Bacille Calmette-GuĂ©rin (BCG) vaccination varies globally. The beneficial off-target effects of BCG are proposed to be stronger amongst children who develop a BCG scar. Within an international randomised trial ('BCG vaccination to reduce the impact of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in healthcare workers'; BRACE Trial), this nested prospective cohort study assessed the prevalence of and factors influencing scar formation, as well as participant perception of BCG scarring 12 months following vaccination . Amongst 3071 BCG-recipients, 2341 (76%) developed a BCG scar. Scar prevalence was lowest in Spain and highest in UK. Absence of post-injection wheal (OR 0.4, 95%CI 0.2-0.9), BCG revaccination (OR 1.7, 95%CI 1.3-2.0), female sex (OR 2.0, 95%CI 1.7-2.4), older age (OR 0.4, 95%CI 0.4-0.5) and study country (Brazil OR 1.6, 95%CI 1.3-2.0) influenced BCG scar prevalence. Of the 2341 participants with a BCG scar, 1806 (77%) did not mind having the scar. Participants more likely to not mind were those in Brazil, males and those with a prior BCG vaccination history. The majority (96%) did not regret having the vaccine. Both vaccination-related (amenable to optimisation) and individual-related factors affected BCG scar prevalence 12 months following BCG vaccination of adults, with implications for maximising the effectiveness of BCG vaccination.Paola Villanueva, Nigel W.     The SPTPoL extended cluster survey

    We describe the observations and resultant galaxy cluster catalog from the 2770 deg2 SPTpol Extended Cluster Survey (SPT-ECS). Clusters are identified via the Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (SZ) effect and confirmed with a combination of archival and targeted follow-up data, making particular use of data from the Dark Energy Survey (DES). With incomplete follow-up we have confirmed as clusters 244 of 266 candidates at a detection significance Ο ≄ 5 and an additional 204 systems at 4 4 threshold, and 10% of their measured SZ flux. We associate SZ-selected clusters, from both SPT-ECS and the SPT-SZ survey, with clusters from the DES redMaPPer sample, and we find an offset distribution between the SZ center and central galaxy in general agreement with previous work, though with a larger fraction of clusters with significant offsets. Adopting a fixed Planck-like cosmology, we measure the optical richness-SZ mass (l - M) relation and find it to be 28% shallower than that from a weak-lensing analysis of the DES data-a difference significant at the 4σ level-with the relations intersecting at λ = 60. The SPT-ECS cluster sample will be particularly useful for studying the evolution of massive clusters and, in combination with DES lensing observations and the SPT-SZ cluster sample, will be an important component of future cosmological analyses

    Search for electroweak production of single top quarks in ppˉp\bar{p} collisions.

    We present a search for electroweak production of single top quarks in the electron+jets and muon+jets decay channels. The measurements use ~90 pb^-1 of data from Run 1 of the Fermilab Tevatron collider, collected at 1.8 TeV with the DZero detector between 1992 and 1995. We use events that include a tagging muon, implying the presence of a b jet, to set an upper limit at the 95% confidence level on the cross section for the s-channel process ppbar->tb+X of 39 pb. The upper limit for the t-channel process ppbar->tqb+X is 58 pb. (arXiv

    Helicity of the W Boson in Lepton+Jets ttbar Events

    We examine properties of ttbar candidates events in lepton+jets final states to establish the helicities of the W bosons in t->W+b decays. Our analysis is based on a direct calculation of a probability that each event corresponds to a ttbar final state, as a function of the helicity of the W boson. We use the 125 events/pb sample of data collected by the DO experiment during Run I of the Fermilab Tevatron collider at sqrt{s}=1.8 TeV, and obtain a longitudinal helicity fraction of F_0=0.56+/-0.31, which is consistent with the prediction of F_0=0.70 from the standard model

    Hard Single Diffraction in pbarp Collisions at root-s = 630 and 1800 GeV

    Using the D0 detector, we have studied events produced in proton-antiproton collisions that contain large forward regions with very little energy deposition (``rapidity gaps'') and concurrent jet production at center-of-mass energies of root-s = 630 and 1800 Gev. The fractions of forward and central jet events associated with such rapidity gaps are measured and compared to predictions from Monte Carlo models. For hard diffractive candidate events, we use the calorimeter to extract the fractional momentum loss of the scattered protons.Comment: 11 pages 4 figures. submitted to PR
