    Melosh rotation: source of the proton's missing spin

    It is shown that the observed small value of the integrated spin structure function for protons could be naturally understood within the naive quark model by considering the effect from Melosh rotation. The key to this problem lies in the fact that the deep inelastic process probes the light-cone quarks rather than the instant-form quarks, and that the spin of the proton is the sum of the Melosh rotated light-cone spin of the individual quarks rather than simply the sum of the light-cone spin of the quarks directly.Comment: 5 latex page

    Critical Exponents of the Metal-Insulator Transition in the Two-Dimensional Hubbard Model

    We study the filling-controlled metal-insulator transition in the two-dimensional Hubbard model near half-filling with the use of zero temperature quantum Monte Carlo methods. In the metallic phase, the compressibility behaves as κμμc0.58±0.08\kappa \propto |\mu - \mu_c|^{-0.58\pm0.08} where μc\mu_c is the critical chemical potential. In the insulating phase, the localization length follows ξlμμcνl\xi_l \propto |\mu - \mu_c|^{-\nu_l} with νl=0.26±0.05\nu_l = 0.26 \pm 0.05. Under the assumption of hyperscaling, the compressibility data leads to a correlation length exponent νκ=0.21±0.04\nu_\kappa = 0.21 \pm 0.04. Our results show that the exponents νκ\nu_\kappa and νl\nu_l agree within statistical uncertainty. This confirms the assumption of hyperscaling with correlation length exponent ν=1/4\nu = 1/4 and dynamical exponent z=4z = 4. In contrast the metal-insulator transition in the generic band insulators in all dimensions as well as in the one-dimensional Hubbard model satisfy the hyperscaling assumption with exponents ν=1/2\nu = 1/2 and z=2z = 2.Comment: Two references added.     Solitary Dust--Acoustic Waves in a Plasma with Two-Temperature Ions and Distributed Grain Size

    The propagation of weakly nonlinear dust--acoustic waves in a dusty plasma containing two ion species with different temperatures is explored. The nonlinear equations describing both the quadratic and cubic plasma nonlinearities are derived. It is shown that the properties of dust--acoustic waves depend substantially on the grain size distribution. In particular, for solitary dust--acoustic waves with a positive potential to exist in a plasma with distributed grain size, it is necessary that the difference between the temperatures of two ion species be large that that in the case of unusized grains.Comment: 16 pages, 6 figure

    In-vitro application of pentoxifylline preserved ultrastructure of spermatozoa after vitrification in asthenozoospermic patients

    Abstract PURPOSE: To evaluate the effect of in vitro application of pentoxifylline (PX) on sperm parameters and ultrastructure after vitrification in asthenozoospermic patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 30 asthenozoospermic semen samples (aged 25-45 years) were divided into four groups before vitrification, after vitrification, control (without PX) and experimental (with PX). In experimental group, each sample was exposed for 30 min to 3.6mmol/l PX and the control group without any treatment apposing in 370C for 30 min. After incubation, the samples were washed and analyzed again. Vitrification was done according to straw method. Eosin-nigrosin and Papanicolaou staining were applied for assessment of sperm viability and morphology, respectively. The samples without PX and post treatment with PX were assessed by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). RESULTS: A significant decrease in sperm motility (P ≤ .001), morphology (11.47 ± 2.9 versus 6.73 ± 2.01) and viability (73.37 ± 6.26 versus 54.67 ± 6.73) was observed post vitrification, but sperm motility (19.85 ± 4.75 versus 32.07 ± 5.58, P ≤ .001) was increased significantly following application of PX. This drug had no significant (P >.05) detrimental neither negative effect on ultrastructure acrosome, plasma membrane and coiled tail statues of spermatozoa. CONCLUSION: Vitrification had detrimental effects on sperm parameters, but PX reversed detrimental effects on sperm motility. However, PX had no alteration on ultrastructure morphology of human spermatozoa after vitrification

    In rats, FK significantly prolonged heterotopic heart graft survival over a wide dose range when given for 2 weeks starting on the day of the operation. Brief courses of FK for one to four days preoperatively, and especially beginning four days postoperatively, allowed long subsequent survival of heart grafts in otherwise untreated recipients. The seeming acceptance of the grafts with postoperative FK treatment was largely but not exclusively donor specific when tested eight days after the last FK dose by second grafts from the same donor v third-party donor grafts.     Stabilization of charge ordering in La_(1/3)Sr_(2/3)FeO_(3-d) by magnetic exchange

    The magnetic exchange energies in charge ordered La_(1/3)Sr_(2/3)FeO_(3-d) (LSFO) and its parent compound LaFeO_(3) (LFO) have been determined by inelastic neutron scattering. In LSFO, the measured ratio of ferromagnetic exchange between Fe3+ - Fe5+ pairs (J_F) and antiferromagnetic exchange between Fe3+ - Fe3+ pairs (J_AF) fulfills the criterion for charge ordering driven by magnetic interactions (|J_F/J_AF| > 1). The 30% reduction of J_AF as compared to LFO indicates that doped holes are delocalized, and charge ordering occurs without a dominant influence from Coulomb interactions.Comment: 18 pages, 4 color figure

    Light Unstable Sterile Neutrino

    The three massless active (doublet) neutrinos may mix with two heavy and one \underline {light} sterile (singlet) neutrinos so that the induced masses and mixings among the former are able to explain the present data on atmospheric and solar neutrino oscillations. If the LSND result is also to be explained, one active neutrino mass eigenstate must mix with the light sterile neutrino.
