Hybrid method for selection of the optimal process of leachate treatment in waste treatment and valorization plants or landfills
“The final publication is available at Springer via http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/s10098-014-0834-4”Leachate from waste landfill or treatment plants is a very complex and highly contaminated liquid effluent. In its composition, it is found dissolved organic matter, inorganic salts, heavy metals, and other xenobiotic organic compounds, so it can be toxic, carcinogenic, and capable of inducing a potential risk to biota and humans. European law does not allow such leachate to leave the premises without being depolluted. There are many procedures that enable debugging, always combining different techniques. Choosing the best method to use in each case is a complex decision, as it depends on many tangible and intangible factors that must be weighed to achieve a balance between technical, cost, and environmental sustainability. It is presenting a hybrid method for choosing the optimal combination of techniques to apply in each case, by combining a multicriteria hierarchical analysis based on expert data obtained by the Delphi method with an analysis by the method of VIKOR to reach a consensus solution.Martín Utrillas, MG.; Reyes Medina, M.; Curiel Esparza, J.; Cantó Perelló, J. The effect of medium composition on the production of sophorolipids and the tensiometric properties by Starmerella bombicola MTCC 1910
Starmerella bombicola a teleomorph of Candida bombicola is capable of producing extracellular secondary metabolites known as sophorolipids. In the present work the performance of Starmerella in producing sophorolipids, with standard medium ingredients glucose, sunflower oil, yeast extract and urea was studied. The quantities of different medium ingredients were optimized to maximize the production of sophorolipids. Variation in tensiometric properties like surface tension and interfacial tension during the incubation period were also reported. The optimized mixed substrate composition was found to be 200 g/l, containing equal amounts of glucose and sunflower oil, 4 g/l of yeast extract and 0.6 g/l of urea. With the optimized substrate composition 38.6 g/l of sophorolipids was obtained. The minimum surface tension produced by the culture free cell broth was 36.2 mN/m. Increasing the temperature from 25oC to 35° C has shown adverse effects on sophorolipids production

890-896Mahua oil methyl, ethyl and butyl esters were prepared and studied in a four stroke, direct injection diesel engine for their performance and emissions. The engine test results showed high thermal efficiency in case of methyl ester compared to all other esters and diesel fuel. Different emissions such as carbon monoxide (CO), oxides of nitrogen (NOx), hydrocarbons (HC) is low for alkyl esters compared to diesel. Among alkyl esters except NOx all tail pipe emissions are lower in case of methyl ester compared to other esters. The ethyl ester shows lower NOx emission compared to other esters. Based on this study, mahua oil methyl ester performs well compared to other esters on the basis of performance and emissions
