    Improved Bonding & Maternal Self-Efficacy in the NICU: A Scoping Review​

    Purpose/Background Mothers of infants admitted into the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) are at risk for developing anxiety, depression, and post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) related to their child’s hospitalization which impedes the mother-infant bonding and attachment process. Research shows that children of mothers suffering from these issues are more likely to develop their own behavioral, emotional and cognitive problems later in life. The purpose of this scoping review is to analyze the literature regarding methods to improve bonding and attachment between NICU patients and their mothers to improve long-term outcomes for the whole family. Methods The authors conducted a literature review from October 2020 to November 2022 using several qualified databases. After analyzing articles for relevancy and inclusion criteria, the remaining articles were screened for validity and reliability via a rapid critical appraisal tool to yield the 10 articles used for this scoping review. The levels of evidence and outcomes of each article were synthesized with a goal to determine which interventions can improve bonding and maternal self-efficacy in the NICU. Results Individualized education and family-centered care leads to positive outcomes that benefit both NICU patients and mothers. Individualized education was shown to increase confidence and improve mental health in NICU mothers. Specifically, increased maternal confidence truly makes the difference in the involvement of care for the patient and positively motivates the mother to prepare for discharge home. Implications for Nursing Practice When NICU mothers are given individualized education, it increases their self-efficacy, which strengthens the bond between the mother and her child. The authors hypothesize that a protocol of specific education and interventions for mothers would foster an environment of family centered care with the goal of increased family involvement, mother-infant attachment, and potentially decreased length of hospital stay

    A Coastal Transect of McMurdo Dry Valleys (Antarctica) Snow and Firn: Marine and Terrestrial Influences on Glaciochemistry

    Samples of snow and firn from accumulation zones on Clark, Commonwealth, Blue and Victoria Upper Glaciers in the McMurdo Dry Valleys (similar to 77-78 degrees S, 161-164 degrees E), Antarctica, are evaluated chemically and isotopically to determine the relative importance of local (site-specific) factors vs regional-scale influences in defining glaciochemistry. Spatial variation in snow and firn chemistry confirms documented trends within individual valleys regarding major-ion deposition relative to elevation and to distance from the coast. Sodium and methylsulfonate (MS-), for example, follow a decreasing gradient with distance from the coast along the axis of Victoria Valley (350-119 mu gL(-1) for Na+; 33-14 mu gL(-1) for MS-); a similar pattern exists between Commonwealth and Newall Glaciers in the Asgaard Range. When comparing major-ion concentrations (e.g. Na-+,Na- MS-, Ca2+) or trace metals (e.g. Al, Fe) among different valleys, however, site-specific exposures to marine and local terrestrial chemical sources play a dominant role. Because chemical signals at all sites respond to particulates with varying mixtures of marine and terrestrial sources, each of these influences on site glaciochemistry must be considered when drawing temporal climate inferences on regional scales

    A 12,000 Year Record of Explosive Volcanism in the Siple Dome Ice Core, West Antarctica

    Air mass trajectories in the Southern Hemisphere provide a mechanism for transport to and deposition of volcanic products on the Antarctic ice sheet from local volcanoes and from tropical and subtropical volcanic centers. This study extends the detailed record of Antarctic, South American, and equatorial volcanism over the last 12,000 years using continuous glaciochemical series developed from the Siple Dome A (SDMA) ice core, West Antarctica. The largest volcanic sulfate spike ( 280 mu g/L) occurs at 5881 B. C. E. Other large signals with unknown sources are observed around 325 B. C. E. ( 270 mu g/L) and 2818 B. C. E. ( 191 mu g/L). Ages of several large equatorial or Southern Hemisphere volcanic eruptions are synchronous with many sulfate peaks detected in the SDMA volcanic ice chemistry record. The microprobe fingerprinting\u27\u27 of glass shards in the SDMA core points to the following Antarctic volcanic centers as sources of tephra found in the SDMA core: Balenny Island, Pleiades, Mount Berlin, Mount Takahe, and Mount Melbourne as well as Mount Hudson and possibly Mount Burney volcanoes of South America. Identified volcanic sources provide an insight into the poorly resolved transport history of volcanic products from source volcanoes to the West Antarctic ice sheet

    Bond between textile-reinforced mortar (TRM) and concrete substrates: experimental investigation

    This paper presents an extended experimental study on the bond behaviour between textile-reinforced mortar (TRM) and concrete substrates. The parameters examined include: (a) the bond length (from 50 mm to 450 mm); (b) the number of TRM layers (from one to four); (c) the concrete surface preparation (grinding versus sandblasting); (d) the concrete compressive strength (15 MPa or 30 MPa); (e) the textile coating; and (f) the anchorage through wrapping with TRM jackets. For this purpose, a total of 80 specimens were fabricated and tested under double-lap direct shear. It is mainly concluded that: (a) after a certain bond length (between 200 mm and 300 mm for any number of layers) the bond strength marginally increases; (b) by increasing the number of layers the bond capacity increases in a non-proportional way, whereas the failure mode is altered; (c) concrete sandblasting is equivalent to grinding in terms of bond capacity and failure mode; (d) concrete compressive strength has a marginal effect on the bond capacity; (e) the use of coated textiles alters the failure mode and significantly increases the bond strength; and (f) anchorage of TRM through wrapping with TRM jackets substantially increases the ultimate load capacity

To help families struggling financially while capitalizing on at-home time, The University of Tennessee (UT) Extension consumer economics leadership team developed a series of money management videos called Money Minute. The primary purpose of the videos was to provide research-based financial education during this time of financial hardships. Filmed using Zoom, each video offers a piece of research-based information, additional resources, and a call to action. The video series proved to be effective in reaching clientele with financial information in the midst of a pandemic

    Twentieth century dust lows and the weakening of the westerly winds over the Tibetan Plateau

    Understanding past atmospheric dust variability is necessary to put modern atmospheric dust into historical context and assess the impacts of dust on the climate. In Asia, meteorological data of atmospheric dust is temporally limited, beginning only in the 1950s. High‐resolution ice cores provide the ideal archive for reconstructing preinstrumental atmospheric dust concentrations. Using a ~500 year (1477–1982 A.D.) annually resolved calcium (Ca) dust proxy from a Tibetan Plateau (TP) ice core, we demonstrate the lowest atmospheric dust concentrations in the past ~500 years during the latter twentieth century. Declines in late nineteenth to twentieth century Ca concentrations significantly correspond with regional zonal wind trends from two reanalysis models, suggesting that the Ca record provides a proxy for the westerlies. Twentieth century warming and attendant atmospheric pressure reductions over northern Asia have potentially reduced temperature/pressure gradients resulting in lower zonal wind velocities and associated dust entrainment/transport in the past ~500 years over the TP
