Fatum ad Benedictum: Moscow-Petushki, Homo Sovieticus, Postmodernism and the Fatidic post-Soviet Irony of Venedikt Vasilevich Erofeev
The following honors thesis is structured into two parts, four chapters apiece.
The first part is a philological study of the Soviet dissident and writer Venedikt Vasilevich Erofeevās magnum opus, Moscow-Petushki (1969-70). This half of the thesis investigates Petushki in light of its thematic development of fate, or, more particularly, the fate of homo sovieticusāthe ironic term devised by Soviet sociologist Aleksandr Zinovyev (1922-2006) to describe a typical conformist citizen of the Soviet Union. I will focus predominantly on Petushkiās connection to the end of the Khrushchev āThawā in the early-mid-1960s and the beginning of Brezhnev āStagnationā in the late-1960s, and will explore the work\u27s engagement with postmodernism.
The second part of my honors thesis is an extension of the first. In this section, I reconstruct and analyze the āKolomna periodā of Erofeevās life and career (ca. 1962-1963), during which he matriculated at the local Kolomensky Pedinstitute and later, following his expulsion, worked as a truck driver and in mass retail. I posit Kolomna as a watershed in Erofeevās biography. This period saw the end of his university studies and the beginning of the āliving largeā (what he would name his āochenā zhiznennii putāā) that characterized his existence up until his death in 1990 of lung cancer. After Kolomna Erofeevās life was marked by increasingly destructive bouts of alcoholism and smoking, extensive peregrinations through the former Soviet Union (largely undertaken sans propiska, or mandatory residence permit), and, most of all, the freer form of writing that culminated artistically in Moscow-Petushki. This part of my analysis asserts a link between the fate of Venichka, the notorious erudite drunk of Moscow-Petushki, and that of Venedikt Erofeev, its controversial author. Although not a single journal or piece of writing by Erofeev from this period is extant, I nonetheless maintain that there is a body of evidence that allows us to piece together a provisional reconstruction of Erofeevās life as he lived it in Kolomna during 1962-1963. The hands-on, on-site research that I conducted for part two took as its starting point the ostensibly āsemi-autobiographicalā nature of Erofeevās poem-in-prose.
Furthermore, in this second half of the honors thesis I curate and analyze materials from the museum and artcommune āErofeev and Othersā and from the seventh annual Kolomna apple and book fair āAntonovās Apples.ā I also transcribe and analyze interviews taken with knowledgeable sources on Erofeev: a local Kolomna poet, Aleksei Makeev, and the chief executor of Erofeevās literary legacy and wife of his son, Galina Erofeeva. For the materials from the museum and festival, I include a set of pictures underscored by captioned analyses; for the materials from the interviews, I provide a written transcription interspersed with authorial commentary.
I collected these materials during a seven-week stay in the city during the autumn of 2018, and have reprinted or recreated them with the express permission of the city of Kolomna, as well as the specific personages they concern. For additional biographical and literary cultural information, I also rely on published recorded interviews with Erofeev and the journals he kept throughout the 1960s. Spaces of rational curves in complete intersections

Theory of Neutron Diffraction from the Vortex Lattice in UPt3
Neutron scattering experiments have recently been performed in the
superconducting state of UPt3 to determine the structure of the vortex lattice.
The data show anomalous field dependence of the aspect ratio of the unit cell
in the B phase. There is apparently also a change in the effective coherence
length on the transition from the B to the C phases. Such observations are not
consistent with conventional superconductvity. A theory of these results is
constructed based on a picture of two-component superconductivity for UPt3. In
this way, these unusual observations can be understood. There is a possible
discrepancy between theory and experiment in the detailed field dependence of

Nonlinear Micromechanical Casimir Oscillator
The Casimir force between uncharged metallic surfaces originates from quantum
mechanical zero point fluctuations of the electromagnetic field. We demonstrate
that this quantum electrodynamical effect has a profound influence on the
oscillatory behavior of microstructures when surfaces are in close proximity
(<= 100 nm). Frequency shifts, hysteretic behavior and bistability caused by
the Casimir force are observed in the frequency response of a periodically

Perturbation of Tunneling Processes by Mechanical Degrees of Freedom in Mesoscopic Junctions
We investigate the perturbation in the tunneling current caused by
non-adiabatic mechanical motion in a mesoscopic tunnel junction. A theory
introduced by Caroli et al. \cite{bi1,bi2,bi3} is used to evaluate second order
self-energy corrections for this non-equilibrium situation lacking
translational invariance. Inelastic signatures of the mechanical degrees of
freedom are found in the current-voltage characteristics. These give

Mechanism of thermally activated c-axis dissipation in layered High-T superconductors at high fields
We propose a simple model which explains experimental behavior of -axis
resistivity in layered High-T superconductors at high fields in a limited
temperature range. It is generally accepted that the in-plane dissipation at
low temperatures is caused by small concentration of mobile pancake vortices
whose diffusive motion is thermally activated. We demonstrate that in such
situation a finite conductivity appears also in -direction due to the phase
slips between the planes caused by the mobile pancakes. The model gives
universal relation between the components of conductivity which is in good

The 3ā² processing factor CstF functions in the DNA repair response
Following DNA damage, mRNA levels decrease, reflecting a coordinated interaction of the DNA repair, transcription and RNA processing machineries. In this study, we provide evidence that transcription and polyadenylation of mRNA precursors are both affected in vivo by UV treatment. We next show that the polyadenylation factor CstF, plays a direct role in the DNA damage response. Cells with reduced levels of CstF display decreased viability following UV treatment, reduced ability to ubiquitinate RNA polymerase II (RNAP II), and defects in repair of DNA damage. Furthermore, we show that CstF, RNAP II and BARD1 are all found at sites of repaired DNA. Our results indicate that CstF plays an active role in the response to DNA damage, providing a link between transcription-coupled RNA processing and DNA repair
Replay: multi-modal multi-view acted videos for casual holography
We introduce Replay, a collection of multi-view, multimodal videos of humans interacting socially. Each scene
is filmed in high production quality, from different viewpoints with several static cameras, as well as wearable
action cameras, and recorded with a large array of microphones at different positions in the room. Overall, the dataset contains over 4000 minutes of footage and over 7 million timestamped high-resolution frames annotated with camera poses and partially with foreground masks. The Replay dataset has many potential applications, such as novelview synthesis, 3D reconstruction, novel-view acoustic synthesis, human body and face analysis, and training generative models. We provide a benchmark for training and evaluating novel-view synthesis, with two scenarios of different difficulty. Finally, we evaluate several baseline state-of-theart methods on the new benchmark
