    Elimination de la matière organique biodégradable par ultrafiltration

    Les installations de production de la Compagnie des Eaux de banlieue (CEB) au Mont Valérien traitent l'eau de Seine en aval de Paris sur 2 filières de potabilisation comprenant pour la première (50 000 m3/J) une préozonation, une coagulation au sels d'Aluminium (Aqualenc), une décantation (super pulsator Degrémont), une filtration sur sable, une ozonation, une filtration sur charbon actif en grains (CAG) et une désinfection finale au bioxyde de chlore, et pour la deuxième, une filtration lente sur sable (80 000 m3/j) dite filtration "Chabale".Dans le cadre du remplacement de la filière "Chabale", une unité de démonstration (8 m3/h) eomprenaut une addition de charbon actif en poudre (CAP) avant ultrafiltration sur membrane a été mise en route.Dans cette étude, une comparaison du traitement conventionnel physico-chimique de l'usine et du nouveau procédé d'ultrafiltration a été effectuée. Pour cela, un suivi du carbone organique total et une évaluation du potentiel de reviviscence ont été réalisés en différents points des chaînes de traitement. La matière organique biodégradable (MOB) a été mesurée par la méthode Werner (1980).Les premiers résultats montrent :- l'élimination des MOB est comparable pour les différents procédés;- toutefois, la nature des MOB est sensiblement affectée à chaque type de traitement (ozonation, addition de CAP, filtration sur sable ou sur CAG)."Compagnie des Eaux de Banlieue" water facilities located at the Mont-Valérien treat the Seine river water downstream Paris. A first facility (5000 m3/day) includes the following processes : preozonation, coagulation, settling, sand filtration, postozonalion, GAC filtration and a final desinfection (CIO2). A second one consists in a biological sand filtration (80000 m3/day). An ultrafiltration demonstration plant including a CAP addition into the recirculation loop is currently tested on a small scale (8 m3/h) to compare the conventional treatments with new ultrafiltration process.In this study, the TOC removal as well as the biodegradable organic matter (BOM) removal are evaluated on the different processes. The BOM has been assessed by the Werner methodology (1980).During the cool season (october-january) all the biodegradable organic matter were removed by the clarification process (preozonation + coagulation decantation + sand filtration). More than 90 % of the BOM were also removed by the ultrafiltration demonstration plant (including granular activated carbon) although the addition of preozonation slightly increases the effluent BOM concentrations and modifies its composition. 80 % of the dissolved organic compounds were removed by the preozonation + ultrafiltration + powder treatment line. This performance should be compared with the 70 % removal obtained with conventional treatments.This study demonstrate that the combination 03 + UF + CAP can advantageously replace traditional treatment such as preozonation + coagulation clarification + ozonation + granular activated carbon + desinfection

    NMR Time Reversal Experiments in Highly Polarised Liquid 3He-4He Mixtures

    Long-range magnetic interactions in highly magnetised liquids (laser-polarised 3He-4He dilute mixtures at 1 K in our experiment) introduce a significant non-linear and non-local contribution to the evolution of nuclear magnetisation that leads to instabilities during free precession. We recently demonstrated that a multi-echo NMR sequence, based on the magic sandwich pulse scheme developed for solid-state NMR, can be used to stabilise the magnetisation against the effect of distant dipolar fields. Here, we report investigations of echo attenuation in an applied field gradient that show the potential of this NMR sequence for spin diffusion measurements at high magnetisation densities.Comment: Accepted for publication in the Journal of Low Temperature Physic

    An asteroseismic study of the O9V star HD 46202 from CoRoT space-based photometry

    The O9V star HD 46202, which is a member of the young open cluster NGC 2244, was observed by the CoRoT satellite in October/November 2008 during a short run of 34 days. From the very high-precision light curve, we clearly detect beta Cep-like pulsation frequencies with amplitudes of ~0.1 mmag and below. A comparison with stellar models was performed using a chi^2 as a measure for the goodness-of-fit between the observed and theoretically computed frequencies. The physical parameters of our best-fitting models are compatible with the ones deduced spectroscopically. A core overshooting parameter alpha_ov = 0.10 +- 0.05 pressure scale height is required. None of the observed frequencies are theoretically excited with the input physics used in our study. More theoretical work is thus needed to overcome this shortcoming in how we understand the excitation mechanism of pulsation modes in such a massive star. A similar excitation problem has also been encountered for certain pulsation modes in beta Cep stars recently modelled asteroseismically.Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysics on 17/12/2010, 9 pages, 7 figures, 4 table

    Ion track grafting: A way of producing low-cost and highly proton conductive membranes for fuel cell applications

The styrene molecules were radiografted and further sulfonated leading to sulfonated polystyrene (PSSA) domains within PVDF. The grafting process all along the cylindrical ion tracks creates after functionalisation privileged paths perpendicular to the membrane plane for proton conduction from the anode to the cathode when used in fuel cells. Such ion track grafted PVDF-g-PSSA membranes have low gas permeation properties against H 2 and O 2. A degree of grafting (Y w) of 140% was chosen to ensure a perfect coverage of PSSA onto PVDF-g-PSSA surface minimizing interfacial ohmic losses with the active layers of the Membrane Electrolyte Assembly (MEA). A three-day fuel cell test has been performed feeding the cell with pure H 2 and O 2 , at the anode and cathode side respectively. Temperature has been progressively increased from 50 to 80 • C. Polarisation curves and Elec-trochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS) at different current densities were used to evaluate the MEA performance. From these last measurements, it has been possible to determine the resistance of the MEA during the fuel cell tests and, thus the membrane conductivity. The proton conductivities of such membranes estimated during fuel cell tests range from 50 mS cm −1 to 80 mS cm −1 depending on the operating conditions. These values are close to that of perfluorosulfonated membrane such as Nafion ® in similar conditions

    Immunogenicity of a low-dose diphtheria, tetanus and acellular pertussis combination vaccine with either inactivated or oral polio vaccine compared to standard-dose diphtheria, tetanus, acellular pertussis when used as a pre-school booster in UK children : a 5-year follow-up of a randomised controlled study

    This serological follow up study assessed the kinetics of antibody response in children who previously participated in a single centre, open-label, randomised controlled trial of low-dose compared to standard-dose diphtheria booster preschool vaccinations in the United Kingdom (UK). Children had previously been randomised to receive one of three combination vaccines: either a combined adsorbed tetanus, low-dose diphtheria, 5-component acellular pertussis and inactivated polio vaccine (IPV) (Tdap-IPV, Repevax(®); Sanofi Pasteur MSD); a combined adsorbed tetanus, low-dose diphtheria and 5-component acellular pertussis vaccine (Tdap, Covaxis(®); Sanofi Pasteur MSD) given concomitantly with oral polio vaccine (OPV); or a combined adsorbed standard-dose diphtheria, tetanus, 2-component acellular pertussis and IPV (DTap-IPV, Tetravac(®); Sanofi Pasteur MSD). Blood samples for the follow-up study were taken at 1, 3 and 5 years after participation in the original trial (median, 5.07 years of age at year 1), and antibody persistence to each vaccine antigen measured against defined serological thresholds of protection. All participants had evidence of immunity to diphtheria with antitoxin concentrations greater than 0.01IU/mL five years after booster vaccination and 75%, 67% and 79% of children who received Tdap-IPV, Tdap+OPV and DTap-IPV, respectively, had protective antitoxin levels greater than 0.1IU/mL. Long lasting protective immune responses to tetanus and polio antigens were also observed in all groups, though polio responses were lower in the sera of those who received OPV. Low-dose diphtheria vaccines provided comparable protection to the standard-dose vaccine and are suitable for use for pre-school booster vaccination

    Including osteoprotegerin and collagen IV in a score-based blood test for liver fibrosis increases diagnostic accuracy

    BACKGROUND: Noninvasive methods for liver fibrosis evaluation in chronic liver diseases have been recently developed, i.e. transient elastography (Fibroscan™) and blood tests (Fibrometer®, Fibrotest®, and Hepascore®). In this study, we aimed to design a new score in chronic hepatitis C (CHC) by selecting blood markers in a large panel and we compared its diagnostic performance with those of other noninvasive methods. METHODS: Sixteen blood tests were performed in 306 untreated CHC patients included in a multicenter prospective study (ANRS HC EP 23 Fibrostar) using METAVIR histological fibrosis stage as reference. The new score was constructed by non linear regression using the most accurate biomarkers. RESULTS: Five markers (alpha-2-macroglobulin, apolipoprotein-A1, AST, collagen IV and osteoprotegerin) were included in the new function called Coopscore©. Using the Obuchowski Index, Coopscore© shows higher diagnostic performances than for Fibrometer®, Fibrotest®, Hepascore® and Fibroscan™ in CHC. Association between Fibroscan™ and Coopscore© might avoid 68% of liver biopsies for the diagnosis of significant fibrosis. CONCLUSION: Coopscore© provides higher accuracy than other noninvasive methods for the diagnosis of liver fibrosis in CHC. The association of Coopscore© with Fibroscan™ increases its predictive value

    Pervasive protein thermal stability variation during the cell cycle

    Quantitative mass spectrometry has established proteome-wide regulation of protein abundance and post-translational modifications in various biological processes. Here, we used quantitative mass spectrometry to systematically analyze the thermal stability and solubility of proteins on a proteome-wide scale during the eukaryotic cell cycle. We demonstrate pervasive variation of these biophysical parameters with most changes occurring in mitosis and G1. Various cellular pathways and components vary in thermal stability, such as cell-cycle factors, polymerases, and chromatin remodelers. We demonstrate that protein thermal stability serves as a proxy for enzyme activity, DNA binding, and complex formation in situ. Strikingly, a large cohort of intrinsically disordered and mitotically phosphorylated proteins is stabilized and solubilized in mitosis, suggesting a fundamental remodeling of the biophysical environment of the mitotic cell. Our data represent a rich resource for cell, structural, and systems biologists interested in proteome regulation during biological transitions
