    In this paper we use the Hungarian Central Statistical Office’s Labour Force Survey to examine the rate of Hungarian inhabitants working abroad between 1999 and 2011. We also examine the charac teristics of this group. A break in trend can be observed in the fourth quarter of 2009 in the rate of Hungarians with a foreign workplace . The growth of the rate has accelerated since then. Working abroad – including commuting between countries – is more frequent in the group of men and in the age group between 20 and 30 years. Considering education, vocational school and university degree make working abroad the most likely but this effect does not apply the same way in different geographical regions. In more developed regions the effect of education is stronger and the odds of working abroad are the highest for people with university degree. In less developed regions vocational training increases the most the odds of working in another country. The effec t of age also differs: while in less developed regions being above the age of 40 decreases significantly the odds of working abroad, in developed regions this effect does not apply

    Antibacterial effect of sprouts against human pathogens in vitro

    Sprouts contain minerals, vitamins, and other compounds, which may have antimicrobial activity. Antimicrobial compounds are released from homogenized sprouts and diffuse into the culture medium inhibiting the growth of pathogenic bacteria. These antibacterial compounds may influence the multiplication of contaminating pathogens. In this study the antimicrobial effects of 55 different homogenized sprouts were investigated with agar well diffusion method on human pathogenic bacteria. Homogenizates of different radish, early kohlrabi, and red cabbage sprouts caused inhibitory zone around the wells on the surface of inoculated agar plates. Mustard, zucchini, medical (German) chamomile, spicy fenugreek, and adzuki bean sprouts had antimicrobial effect only against a few human pathogenic bacteria. Twenty-nine other spicy and vegetable sprouts had no antibacterial activity against the investigated human pathogens. The results suggest that a few sprouts have antimicrobial properties, but different cultivars of the same species have different effects against different bacterial strains.     Milk production of pseudopregnant multiparous does

    The aim of the experiment was to evaluate the milk production of pseudopregnant does. In this experiment, data of multiparous, inseminated, pregnant (IP, n=15) does and two groups of presumably pseudopregnant multiparous does: inseminated, non-pregnant (INP, n=17) and induced to ovulation by GnRH (1.5 microgram per animal) at the day of insemination (11 d after parturition) (non-inseminated, ovulating: NIO, n=15) were analysed. The progesterone level was measured at the 12th d after treatment to determine if females were pseudopregnant. All IP and NIO does were pregnant and pseudopregnant, respectively. Within the INP group, 10 and 7 does were diagnosed as positive (INPO) or negative (INPNO) for pseudopregnancy. Two of the INPNO does perished during lactation. The average milk production of groups IP, INP and NIO was 212, 92 and 72 g/d, respectively (P160 g in the various groups were: IP=0, 0, 0, 0 and 100%, NIO=20, 13, 27, 40 and 0%, INP=15, 15, 15, 55 and 0%, respectively. The daily milk yield of the 5 INPNO does was 2, 6, 27, 84 and 139 g, respectively.     Two main mutational processes operate in the absence of DNA mismatch repair

    The analysis of tumour genome sequences has demonstrated high rates of base substitution mutagenesis upon the inactivation of DNA mismatch repair (MMR), and the resulting somatic mutations in MMR deficient tumours appear to significantly enhance the response to immune therapy. A handful of different algorithmically derived base substitution mutation signatures have been attributed to MMR deficiency in tumour somatic mutation datasets. In contrast, mutation data obtained from whole genome sequences of isogenic wild type and MMR deficient cell lines in this study, as well as from published sources, show a more uniform experimental mutation spectrum of MMR deficiency. In order to resolve this discrepancy, we reanalysed mutation data from MMR deficient tumour whole exome and whole genome sequences. We derived two base substitution signatures using non-negative matrix factorisation, which together adequately describe mutagenesis in all tumour and cell line samples. The two new signatures broadly resemble COSMIC signatures 6 and 20, but perform better than existing COSMIC signatures at identifying MMR deficient tumours in mutation signature deconstruction. We show that the contribution of the two identified signatures, one of which is dominated by C to T mutations at CpG sites, is biased by the different sequence composition of the exome and the whole genome. We further show that the identity of the inactivated MMR gene, the tissue type, the mutational burden or the patient's age does not influence the mutation spectrum, but that a tendency for a greater contribution by the CpG mutational process is observed in tumours as compared to cultured cells.     Effect of group size and stocking density on productive, carcass, meat quality and aggression traits of growing rabbits

    [EN] The aim of the experiment was to examine the effect of group size and stocking density on productive, carcass and meat quality traits. The trial was conducted using 230 Pannon white rabbits weaned at 5 weeks and reared until the age of 11 weeks. Seven groups were formed with different cage/pen sizes (group size) and stocking densities: SC16=small cage (0.12 m2), 16 rabbits/m2 (2 rabbits/cage); LC16=large cage (0.50 m2), 16 rabbits/m2 (8 rabbits/cage); LC12=large cage, 12 rabbits/m2 (6 rabbits/cage); SP16=small pen (0.86 m2), 16 rabbits/m2 (13 rabbits/cage); SP12=small pen, 12 rabbits/m2 (10 rabbits/cage); LP16=large pen (1.72 m2), 16 rabbits/m2 (26 rabbits/cage); LP12=large pen, 12 rabbits/m2 (20 rabbits/cage). Stocking density did not affect production significantly, as stocking densities lower than 16 rabbits/m2 had no effect on the growing rabbits¿ performance. Group size (size of the cage or pen) had an effect on certain growth, carcass and meat quality traits. Increasing group size resulted in lower values for weight gain (SC: 39.2>LC: 39.0> SP: 38.7> LP: 37.8 g/d; P=0.22) and body weight (SC: 2506>LC: 2498> SP: 2487> LP: 2446 g; P=0.35), similarly to other results in the literature, but the differences were not significant. Aggressive behaviour was observed to be more frequent in the larger group sizes. At the age of 11 weeks the proportion of rabbits with ear lesions in the SC, LC, SP and LP groups were 0.0, 7.1, 8.7, and 17.4%, respectively, demonstrating that larger group size increases the risk of ear lesions. The effect of group size on the ratio of the fore part to the reference carcass (SC: 28.5, LC: 28.2, LP: 29.0%; P=0.02) and on the amount of perirenal fat (SC: 21.3, LC: 18.0, LP: 13.7 g; P<0.001) was significant.     Endoscopy and autopsy follow-up of biodegradable Oesophageal Anastomoses in dogs

    The Biofragmentable Anastomosis Ring (BAR) is a mechanical device composed of absorbable material and creates an inverting, atraumatic compressive anastomosis with no foreign material at the anastomotic site after healing. The aim of the present experimental study was to assess the safety of oesophagoscopy in early days after oesophageal anastomoses performed with the BAR and to follow-up the healing of BAR anastomoses by in vivo endoscopy and autopsy examination. Thirty mongrel dogs divided into subgroups according to the timepoints of endoscopy and autopsy (4th, 7th, 14th, 28th day) were used. There was no significant difference in the healing of anastomoses performed under or above the tracheal bifurcation. Pleural adhesions helped to cover and seal small subclinical leaks. The mortality was 13.3% (4 dogs) and the overall leakage rate 14.3%. We looked for bleeding, haematoma, erosion, ulceration and granulation tissue in the anastomosis. Due to the high mechanical strength of these anastomoses, oesophagoscopy was a safe, easy and feasible method for follow-up BAR intrathoracic anastomoses, with no significant difference between the number of lesions found with endoscopy as compared to the autopsy data. The overall sensitivity of oesophagoscopy to discover mucosal lesions was 73.1%. Endoscopy had no complications, therefore it is a useful method of follow-up and may help predict the normal or compromised healing of oesophageal anastomoses
