Scaling issues in ensemble implementations of the Deutsch-Jozsa algorithm
We discuss the ensemble version of the Deutsch-Jozsa (DJ) algorithm which
attempts to provide a "scalable" implementation on an expectation-value NMR
quantum computer. We show that this ensemble implementation of the DJ algorithm
is at best as efficient as the classical random algorithm. As soon as any
attempt is made to classify all possible functions with certainty, the
implementation requires an exponentially large number of molecules. The
discrepancies arise out of the interpretation of mixed state density matrices.Comment: Minor changes, reference added, replaced with publised versio
Entropy of Lovelock Black Holes
A general formula for the entropy of stationary black holes in Lovelock
gravity theories is obtained by integrating the first law of black hole
mechanics, which is derived by Hamiltonian methods. The entropy is not simply
one quarter of the surface area of the horizon, but also includes a sum of
intrinsic curvature invariants integrated over a cross section of the horizon.Comment: 15 pages, plain Latex, NSF-ITP-93-4
Gravitation with superposed Gauss--Bonnet terms in higher dimensions: Black hole metrics and maximal extensions
Our starting point is an iterative construction suited to combinatorics in
arbitarary dimensions d, of totally anisymmetrised p-Riemann 2p-forms (2p\le d)
generalising the (1-)Riemann curvature 2-forms. Superposition of p-Ricci
scalars obtained from the p-Riemann forms defines the maximally Gauss--Bonnet
extended gravitational Lagrangian. Metrics, spherically symmetric in the (d-1)
space dimensions are constructed for the general case. The problem is directly
reduced to solving polynomial equations. For some black hole type metrics the
horizons are obtained by solving polynomial equations. Corresponding Kruskal
type maximal extensions are obtained explicitly in complete generality, as is
also the periodicity of time for Euclidean signature. We show how to include a
cosmological constant and a point charge. Possible further developments and
applications are indicated.Comment: 13 pages, REVTEX. References and Note Adde
Black holes in the Einstein -Gauss-Bonnet theory and the geometry of their thermodynamics-II
In the present work we study (i) charged black hole in Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet
(EGB) theory, known as Einstein-Maxwell-Gauss-Bonnet (EMGB) black hole and (ii)
black hole in EGB gravity with Yang-Mills field. The thermodynamic geometry of
these two black hole solutions has been investigated, using the modified
entropy in Gauss-Bonnet theory.Comment: 7 page
Modal scattering at an impedance transition in a lined flow duct
An explicit Wiener-Hopf solution is derived to describe the scattering of duct modes at a hard-soft wall impedance transition in a circular duct with uniform mean flow. Specifically, we have a circular duct r = 1,-8 <x <8 with mean flow Mach number M > 0 and a hard wall along x <0 and a wall of impedance Z along x > 0. A minimum edge condition at x = 0 requires a continuous wall streamline r = 1 + h(x, t ), no more singular than h = O(x1/2) for x Âż 0. A mode, incident from x <0, scatters at x = 0 into a series of reflected modes and a series of transmitted modes. Of particular interest is the role of a possible instability along the lined wall in combination with the edge singularity. If one of the "upstream" running modes is to be interpreted as a downstream-running instability, we have an extra degree of freedom in the Wiener-Hopf analysis that can be resolved by application of some form of Kutta condition at x = 0, for example a more stringent edge condition where h = O(x3/2) at the downstream side. The question of the instability requires an investigation of the modes in the complex frequency plane and therefore depends on the chosen impedance model, since Z = Z(Âż) is essentially frequency dependent. The usual causality condition by Briggs and Bers appears to be not applicable here because it requires a temporal growth rate bounded for all real axial wave numbers. The alternative Crighton-Leppington criterion, however, is applicable and confirms that the suspected mode is usually unstable. In general, the effect of this Kutta condition is significant, but it is particularly large for the plane wave at low frequencies and should therefore be easily measurable. For Âż Âż 0, the modulus tends to |R001| Âż (1 + M)/(1 - M) without and to 1 with Kutta condition, while the end correction tends to8without and to a finite value with Kutta condition. This is exactly the same behaviour as found for reflection at a pipe exit with flow, irrespective if this is uniform or jet flow
Shape and blocking effects on odd-even mass differences and rotational motion of nuclei
Nuclear shapes and odd-nucleon blockings strongly influence the odd-even
differences of nuclear masses. When such effects are taken into account, the
determination of the pairing strength is modified resulting in larger pair
gaps. The modified pairing strength leads to an improved self-consistent
description of moments of inertia and backbending frequencies, with no
additional parameters.Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures, subm to PR
D-Brane Chemistry
We study several different kinds of bound states built from D-branes and
orientifolds. These states are to atoms what branonium - the bound state of a
brane and its anti-brane - is to positronium, inasmuch as they typically
involve a light brane bound to a much heavier object with conserved charges
which forbid the system's decay. We find the fully relativistic motion of a
probe Dp'-brane in the presence of source Dp-branes is integrable by
quadratures. Keplerian conic sections are obtained for special choices for p
and p' and the systems are shown to be equivalent to nonrelativistic systems.
Their quantum behaviour is also equivalent to the corresponding
non-relativistic limit. In particular the p=6, p'=0 case is equivalent to a
non-relativistic dyon in a magnetic monopole background, with the trajectories
in the surface of a cone. We also show that the motion of the probe branes
about D6-branes in IIA theory is equivalent to the motion of the corresponding
probes in the uplift to M-theory in 11 dimensions, for which there are no
D6-branes but their fields are replaced by a particular Taub-NUT geometry. We
further discuss the interactions of D-branes and orientifold planes having the
same dimension. this system behaves at large distances as a brane-brane system
but at shorter distances it does not have the tachyon instability.Comment: ref. added and typos correcte
A longitudinal investigation of repressive coping and ageing
This is an Accepted Manuscript of an article published by Taylor & Francis in Aging & Mental Health on October 2016, available online: http://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/13607863.2015.1060941.Two studies investigated the possibility that repressive coping is more prevalent in older adults and that this represents a developmental progression rather than a cohort effect. Study 1 examined repressive coping and mental health cross-sectionally in young and old adults. Study 2 examined whether there was a developmental progression of repressive coping prevalence rates in a longitudinal sample of older adults.Peer reviewedFinal Accepted Versio
Thermodynamic and gravitational instability on hyperbolic spaces
We study the properties of anti--de Sitter black holes with a Gauss-Bonnet
term for various horizon topologies (k=0, \pm 1) and for various dimensions,
with emphasis on the less well understood k=-1 solution. We find that the zero
temperature (and zero energy density) extremal states are the local minima of
the energy for AdS black holes with hyperbolic event horizons. The hyperbolic
AdS black hole may be stable thermodynamically if the background is defined by
an extremal solution and the extremal entropy is non-negative. We also
investigate the gravitational stability of AdS spacetimes of dimensions D>4
against linear perturbations and find that the extremal states are still the
local minima of the energy. For a spherically symmetric AdS black hole
solution, the gravitational potential is positive and bounded, with or without
the Gauss-Bonnet type corrections, while, when k=-1, a small Gauss-Bonnet
coupling, namely, \alpha << {l}^2 (where l is the curvature radius of AdS
space), is found useful to keep the potential bounded from below, as required
for stability of the extremal background.Comment: Shortened to match published (PRD) version, 18 pages, several eps
