    Human endometrial cell coculture reduces the endocrine disruptor toxicity on mouse embryo development

    BACKGROUNDS: Previous studies suggested that endocrine disruptors (ED) are toxic on preimplantation embryos and inhibit development of embryos in vitro culture. However, information about the toxicity of endocrine disruptors on preimplantation development of embryo in human reproductive environment is lacking. METHODS: Bisphenol A (BPA) and Aroclor 1254 (polychlorinated biphenyls) were used as endocrine disruptors in this study. Mouse 2-cell embryos were cultured in medium alone or vehicle or co-cultured with human endometrial epithelial layers in increasing ED concentrations. RESULTS: At 72 hours the percentage of normal blastocyst were decreased by ED in a dose-dependent manner while the co-culture system significantly enhanced the rate and reduced the toxicity of endocrine disruptors on the embryonic development in vitro. CONCLUSIONS: In conclusion, although EDs have the toxic effect on embryo development, the co-culture with human endometrial cell reduced the preimplantation embryo from it thereby making human reproductive environment protective to preimplantation embryo from the toxicity of endocrine disruptors

    Electroacupuncture Delays Hypertension Development through Enhancing NO/NOS Activity in Spontaneously Hypertensive Rats

    Using spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR), this study investigated whether electroacupuncture (EA) could reduce early stage hypertension by examining nitric oxide (NO) levels in plasma and nitric oxide synthase (NOS) levels in the mesenteric resistance artery. EA was applied to the acupuncture point Governor Vessel 20 (GV20) or to a non-acupuncture point in the tail twice weekly for 3 weeks under anesthesia. In conscious SHR and normotensive Wistar Kyoto (WKY) rats, blood pressure was determined the day after EA treatment by the tail-cuff method. We measured plasma NO concentration, and evaluated endothelial NO syntheses (eNOS) and neuronal NOS (nNOS) protein expression in the mesenteric artery. Systolic blood pressure (SBP) and diastolic blood pressure (DBP) were lower after 3 weeks of GV20 treatment than EA at non-acupuncture point and no treatment control in SHR. nNOS expression by EA was significantly different between both WKY and no treatment SHR control, and EA at GV20 in SHR. eNOS expression was significantly high in EA at GV 20 compared with no treatment control. In conclusion, EA could attenuate the blood pressure elevation of SHR, along with enhancing NO/NOS activity in the mesenteric artery in SHR

    Enhanced ferroelectric switching speed of Si-doped HfO2 thin film tailored by oxygen deficiency

    Investigations concerning oxygen deficiency will increase our understanding of those factors that govern the overall material properties. Various studies have examined the relationship between oxygen deficiency and the phase transformation from a nonpolar phase to a polar phase in HfO2 thin films. However, there are few reports on the effects of oxygen deficiencies on the switching dynamics of the ferroelectric phase itself. Herein, we report the oxygen- deficiency induced enhancement of ferroelectric switching properties of Si-doped HfO2 thin films. By controlling the annealing conditions, we controlled the oxygen deficiency concentration in the ferroelectric orthorhombic HfO2 phase. Rapid high-temperature (800 degrees C) annealing of the HfO2 film accelerated the characteristic switching speed compared to low-temperature (600 degrees C) annealing. Scanning transmission electron microscopy and electron energy-loss spectroscopy (EELS) revealed that thermal annealing increased oxygen deficiencies, and first-principles calculations demonstrated a reduction of the energy barrier of the polarization flip with increased oxygen deficiency. A Monte Carlo simulation for the variation in the energy barrier of the polarization flipping confirmed the increase of characteristic switching speed

    Psychiatric Disorder in Two Siblings with Hallervorden-Spatz Disease

    Hallervorden-Spatz disease (HSD) is a rare autosomal-recessive hereditary disorder characterized by the early onset of progressive movement alterations, including dystonia, rigidity, choreoathetosis, and mental deterioration. HSD is also associated with a variety of psychiatric symptoms, primarily depression and mental deterioration. However, psychosis has rarely been reported as a major symptom of HSD. We report two siblings who presented psychiatric symptoms as major clinical presentations, accompanied by ataxic and spastic gait, dysarthria, and typical neuroimaging findings of HSD. A 14-year-old girl presented complex motor tics, stereotypic behavior and anxiety symptoms. Her older brother, a 16-year-old boy, presented prominent auditory hallucinations, persecutory delusions and social withdrawal symptoms. Psychiatric symptoms were improved after atypical antipsychotic treatment. HSD is a rare disease but should be carefully considered in the diagnosis of patients with both motor disorder and various psychiatric symptoms

    Dietary supplement use by South Korean adults: Data from the national complementary and alternative medicine use survey (NCAMUS) in 2006

    There has been little data on the prevalence of supplement use and the characteristics of the dietary supplement users in the Republic of Korea. This study presents the prevalence and the details of any dietary supplement use and the characteristics of the adults who use dietary supplements in the Republic of Korea. Between May 18 and June 16, 2006, nationwide and population-weighted personal interviews with 6,201 adult aged from 30 to 69 years were conducted and the final sample consisted of 3,000 people with a 49.8% response rate. We examined the prevalence and details of the use of dietary supplements and the characteristics of those who use the dietary supplement among adults. About sixty two percent of adults had taken any dietary supplement during the previous 12-month period in 2006. The most commonly reported dietary supplement was ginseng, followed by multivitamins, glucosamine, probiotics, and vitamin C. Female (versus male), an older age group, a higher family income, those living in metropolitan cities, those with marital experience, those with a higher level of education, and those having medical problems had a greater likelihood of reporting the use of any dietary supplements. The particular relationships differed depending on the type of supplement. The most Korean adults took one more dietary supplement and the dietary supplement users had different demographic and health characteristics compared to those of the nonusers. Research on diet supplements by the medical community is needed in the future

    Characteristics, Outcomes and Predictors of Long-Term Mortality for Patients Hospitalized for Acute Heart Failure: A Report From the Korean Heart Failure Registry

    BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Acute heart failure (AHF) is associated with a poor prognosis and it requires repeated hospitalizations. However, there are few studies on the characteristics, treatment and prognostic factors of AHF. The aims of this study were to describe the clinical characteristics, management and outcomes of the patients hospitalized for AHF in Korea. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: We analyzed the clinical data of 3,200 hospitalization episodes that were recorded between June 2004 and April 2009 from the Korean Heart Failure (KorHF) Registry database. The mean age was 67.6±14.3 years and 50% of the patients were female. RESULTS: Twenty-nine point six percent (29.6%) of the patients had a history of previous HF and 52.3% of the patients had ischemic heart disease. Left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) was reported for 89% of the patients. The mean LVEF was 38.5±15.7% and 26.1% of the patients had preserved systolic function (LVEF ≥50%), which was more prevalent in the females (34.0% vs. 18.4%, respectively, p<0.001). At discharge, 58.6% of the patients received beta-blockers (BB), 53.7% received either angiotensin converting enzyme-inhibitors or angiotensin receptor blockers (ACEi/ARB), and 58.4% received both BB and ACEi/ARB. The 1-, 2-, 3- and 4-year mortality rates were 15%, 21%, 26% and 30%, respectively. Multivariate analysis revealed that advanced age {hazard ratio: 1.023 (95% confidence interval: 1.004-1.042); p=0.020}, a previous history of heart failure {1.735 (1.150-2.618); p=0.009}, anemia {1.973 (1.271-3.063); p=0.002}, hyponatremia {1.861 (1.184-2.926); p=0.007}, a high level of serum N-terminal pro-B-type natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) {3.152 (1.450-6.849); p=0.004} and the use of BB at discharge {0.599 (0.360-0.997); p=0.490} were significantly associated with total death. CONCLUSION: We present here the characteristics and prognosis of an unselected population of AHF patients in Korea. The long-term mortality rate was comparable to that reported in other countries. The independent clinical risk factors included age, a previous history of heart failure, anemia, hyponatremia, a high NT-proBNP level and taking BB at discharge.ope

    Bridging the gap between self-report and behavioral laboratory measures: A real-time driving task with inverse reinforcement learning

    A major challenge in assessing psychological constructs such as impulsivity is the weak correlation between self-report and behavioral task measures that are supposed to assess the same construct. To address this issue, we developed a real-time driving task called the “highway task”, where participants often exhibit impulsive behaviors, such as reckless driving, thereby mirroring real-life impulsive traits captured by self-report surveys. Here, we first show that a self-report measure of impulsivity is highly correlated with performance in the highway task, but not with traditional behavioral task measures of impulsivity. By integrating deep neural networks with an inverse reinforcement learning (IRL) algorithm, we inferred dynamic changes of subjective rewards during the highway task. The IRL results indicated that impulsive participants attribute high subjective rewards to irrational or risky driving behaviors and situations. Overall, our results suggest that using real-time tasks combined with IRL can help reconcile the discrepancy between self-report and behavioral task measures of psychological constructs including impulsivity, with IRL being a practical modeling framework for multidimensional data from real-time tasks

    Conditional radiation tolerance of ferroelectric Hf0.5Zr0.5O2 thin film under Co-60 gamma-ray irradiation

    We report the effect of Co-60 gamma-ray irradiation on the ferroelectric properties of metal-ferroelectric Hf0.5Zr0.5O2-metal thin film structures. The pristine Hf0.5Zr0.5O2 films showed strong radiation tolerance against gamma-rays with stable remanant polarization values. When Hf0.5Zr0.5O2 films were exposed to electric field cycling, or &quot;wake-up &quot; process, prior to irradiation, however, their ferroelectricity demonstrated a clear degradation of remanant polarization and coercive voltage shift of the hysteresis curves. The analysis of ferroelectric switching dynamics revealed faster polarization switching with broadening of Lorentzian distribution of characteristic switching time for higher radiation doses, which is contrary to the wake-up behavior. The relationship between the wake-up process and gamma-ray irradiation on the stability of ferroelectric Hf0.5Zr0.5O2 films was discussed in light of domain alignment and defect mechanisms, considering both the redistribution and trapping of defect charges.&amp; nbsp;Published under an exclusive license by AIP Publishing.N
