Higher bundle gerbes and cohomology classes in gauge theories
The notion of a higher bundle gerbe is introduced to give a geometric
realization of the higher degree integral cohomology of certain manifolds. We
consider examples using the infinite dimensional spaces arising in gauge
theories.Comment: 16 pages, LaTe
Nutritional Studies on Dried Functional Food Ingredients Containing omega-3 Polyunsaturated Fatty-Acids.
End of Project ReportTeagasc acknowledges with gratitude grant aid under the EU Framework Programme (EU FAIR
contract No. CT-95-0085).The nutritional benefits of fish oils are generally attributed to their content of long
chain omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs). Diets rich in these fatty acids
are known to reduce the risk of coronary thrombosis, and are recommended to
those who are susceptible to atherosclerosis. In addition, some of these long chain
PUFAs play an important role in early infant nutrition, in the development of vital
human organs such as the neural tube.
However, practical difficulties arise in achieving an adequate daily intake of fish
oils to obtain these physiological benefits. Per capita fish consumption is low in
many countries, especially of oily fish with high levels of omega-3 PUFAs. Fish oil,
while available as a dietary supplement, is not universally appealing in that form.
Attempts to incorporate fish oil into food formulations have had limited success
mainly because of fishy flavours coming through in the consumer products. Fish
oil is particularly susceptible to oxidation, which results in fishy, painty and metallic
flavours.
Hence the main aim of this study was the development of a dried ingredient in
which the formulation and related processing conditions were optimised to protect
the fish oil from oxidation. Protection of any sensitive oil may be achieved by
means of microencapsulation, whereby oil is dispersed as very fine droplets in
emulsions. During subsequent spray drying the droplets are effectively sealed
inside a protective coating of protein surrounded by carbohydrate.
The objective was, therefore, to evaluate microencapsulation as a means of
extending the shelf-life of fish oil in powder form thus increasing its versatility as a
nutritional ingredient in food formulations.European Unio
WZW orientifolds and finite group cohomology
The simplest orientifolds of the WZW models are obtained by gauging a Z_2
symmetry group generated by a combined involution of the target Lie group G and
of the worldsheet. The action of the involution on the target is by a twisted
inversion g \mapsto (\zeta g)^{-1}, where \zeta is an element of the center of
G. It reverses the sign of the Kalb-Ramond torsion field H given by a
bi-invariant closed 3-form on G. The action on the worldsheet reverses its
orientation. An unambiguous definition of Feynman amplitudes of the orientifold
theory requires a choice of a gerbe with curvature H on the target group G,
together with a so-called Jandl structure introduced in hep-th/0512283. More
generally, one may gauge orientifold symmetry groups \Gamma = Z_2 \ltimes Z
that combine the Z_2-action described above with the target symmetry induced by
a subgroup Z of the center of G. To define the orientifold theory in such a
situation, one needs a gerbe on G with a Z-equivariant Jandl structure. We
reduce the study of the existence of such structures and of their inequivalent
choices to a problem in group-\Gamma cohomology that we solve for all simple
simply-connected compact Lie groups G and all orientifold groups \Gamma = Z_2
\ltimes Z.Comment: 48+1 pages, 11 figure
The Weyl map and bundle gerbes
Available online 5 December 2019.We introduce the notion of a general cup product bundle gerbe and use it to define the Weyl bundle gerbe on T x SU(n)/T. The Weyl map from T x SU(n)/T to SU(n) is then used to show that the pullback of the basic bundle gerbe on SU(n) defined by the second two authors is stably isomorphic to the Weyl bundle gerbe as SU(n)-equivariant bundle gerbes. Both bundle gerbes come equipped with connections and curvings and by considering the holonomy of these we show that these bundle gerbes are not D-stably isomorphic.Kimberly E. Becker, Michael K. Type I D-branes in an H-flux and twisted KO-theory
Witten has argued that charges of Type I D-branes in the presence of an
H-flux, take values in twisted KO-theory. We begin with the study of real
bundle gerbes and their holonomy. We then introduce the notion of real bundle
gerbe KO-theory which we establish is a geometric realization of twisted
KO-theory. We examine the relation with twisted K-theory, the Chern character
and provide some examples. We conclude with some open problems.Comment: 23 pages, Latex2e, 2 new references adde
Ten simple rules for supporting a temporary online pivot in higher education
As continued COVID-19 disruption looks likely across the world, perhaps until 2021, contingency plans are evolving in case of further disruption in the 2020–2021 academic year. This includes delivering face-to-face programs fully online for at least part of the upcoming academic year for new and continuing cohorts. This temporary pivot will necessitate distance teaching and learning across almost every conceivable pedagogy, from fundamental degrees to professionally accredited ones. Each institution, program, and course will have its own myriad of individualized needs; however, there is a common question that unites us all: how do we provide teaching and assessment to students in a manner that is accessible, fair, equitable, and provides the best learning whilst acknowledging the temporary nature of the pivot? No “one size fits all” solution exists, and many of the choices that need to be made will be far from simple; however, this paper provides a starting point and basic principles to facilitate discussions taking place around the globe by balancing what we know from the pedagogy of online learning with the practicalities imposed by this crisis and any future crises
Trajectory and predictors of quality of life in first episode psychotic mania.
BACKGROUND: Little is known about the trajectory of quality of life (QoL) following a first episode of psychotic mania in bipolar disorder (BD). This 18-month longitudinal study investigated the trajectory of QoL, and the influence of premorbid adjustment and symptoms on 18-month QoL in a cohort of young people experiencing a first episode of psychotic mania.
METHODS: As part of an overarching clinical trial, at baseline, sixty participants presenting with a first episode of psychotic mania (BD Type 1 - DSM-IV) completed symptomatic and functional assessments in addition to the Premorbid Adjustment Scale - General Subscale. Symptom measures were repeated at 18-month follow up. QoL was rated using the Quality of Life Scale (QLS) at designated time points.
RESULTS: Mean QLS scores at initial measurement (8 weeks) were 61% of the maximum possible score, increasing significantly to 70% at 12 months, and 71.2% at 18-month follow-up. Premorbid adjustment and 18-month depressive symptoms were significantly associated with QoL at 18-month follow-up.
LIMITATIONS: Study limitations include the small sample size, inclusion of participants with psychotic mania only, use of measures originally designed for use with schizophrenia spectrum disorders, and lack of premorbid or baseline measurement of QoL.
CONCLUSIONS: Results suggest that QoL can be maintained early in BD, and reinforce the importance of assertively treating depressive symptoms throughout the course of this disorder. The emergence of a link between premorbid adjustment and poorer QoL in this cohort highlights the importance of assessing facets of adjustment when planning psychological interventions
Spectral curves and the mass of hyperbolic monopoles
The moduli spaces of hyperbolic monopoles are naturally fibred by the
monopole mass, and this leads to a nontrivial mass dependence of the
holomorphic data (spectral curves, rational maps, holomorphic spheres)
associated to hyperbolic multi-monopoles. In this paper, we obtain an explicit
description of this dependence for general hyperbolic monopoles of magnetic
charge two. In addition, we show how to compute the monopole mass of higher
charge spectral curves with tetrahedral and octahedral symmetries. Spectral
curves of euclidean monopoles are recovered from our results via an
infinite-mass limit.Comment: 43 pages, LaTeX, 3 figure
Information Metric on Instanton Moduli Spaces in Nonlinear Sigma Models
We study the information metric on instanton moduli spaces in two-dimensional
nonlinear sigma models. In the CP^1 model, the information metric on the moduli
space of one instanton with the topological charge Q=k which is any positive
integer is a three-dimensional hyperbolic metric, which corresponds to
Euclidean anti--de Sitter space-time metric in three dimensions, and the
overall scale factor of the information metric is (4k^2)/3; this means that the
sectional curvature is -3/(4k^2). We also calculate the information metric in
the CP^2 model.Comment: 9 pages, LaTeX; added references for section 1; typos adde
Generalized Kahler geometry and gerbes
We introduce and study the notion of a biholomorphic gerbe with connection.
The biholomorphic gerbe provides a natural geometrical framework for
generalized Kahler geometry in a manner analogous to the way a holomorphic line
bundle is related to Kahler geometry. The relation between the gerbe and the
generalized Kahler potential is discussed.Comment: 28 page
