    The quest for contented sobriety: a dramaturgical analysis of recovery in Alcoholics Anonymous

    This thesis examines the phenomenon of recovery as it is experienced and understood by members of Alcoholics Anonymous in Newfoundland and Labrador. Recovery involves more than just changes in the brains and bodies of the addicted person. It is more than changes in positive affect, mood or personality structure. Recovery is more than the gradual modifications of behaviour associated with learning models. In this dissertation, I present a new and alternative interpretation of recovery by applying insights from the fields of ritual theory and dramaturgy. A qualitative research design, using participant observation and in-depth interviews, were used to generate detailed descriptions of the social processes involved in recovery. Data generated from these methods have yielded new insights into the inner workings of AA not yet described in the existing sociological literature. Data from this study reveal recovery as a dynamic social process wherein the novice AA member, referred to in this study as the penitent, experiences dramatic personal change and transformation through the twelve step program. The experience of working the twelve steps is presented in this study as a personal rite of passage involving three phases of transformation: separation, liminality and incorporation or aggregation. At each stage of this transformational process the AA member must follow certain emotion display rules and learn how to work with others in the home group to become a contributing member of a performance team. The emotions and behaviours associated with recovery are thus strongly influenced by social factors which are unique to the subculture of AA. Findings from this study have the potential to flesh out and expand conceptual models of recovery and to better inform social policy on addictions

    In the Shadow of the Tower: The View of the Undergraduate Experience

    This paper reports the initial findings of a survey (N=388) conducted in Winter 1991 focusing on the quality of the academic experience for Arts and Science students at a medium size post-secondary institution in eastern Canada. Our purposes are: 1) to set out the context in which undergraduates conduct their academic work, 2) to document what their experience entails, and 3) to present some of their perceptions of the higher education process. While most students have vocational goals in mind, they are also keenly interested in acquiring a solid general education. Undergraduates attend most of their classes, are heavily committed to completing their programs, and work quite diligently in pursuit of their goals in the face of what many of them consider to be heavy workloads. They are not, however, completely satisfied with the services that they receive in return for their tuition fees and for Canadians' tax dollars. While satisfaction levels vary with the type of services provided, it is clear that there does exist substantial room in which institutions can make improvements. Specifically, our data suggest that the primary goals of universities seeking to better the undergraduate experience should be to encourage more effective teaching and its evaluation, to reduce class sizes, to increase formal and informal interaction among faculty members and students, to improve the quality of academic advising, and to support the creation of more equitable financial assistance programs for students.Cet article présente les premiers résultats d'une enquête (N=388) menée durant l'hiver 1991 portant sur la qualité de l'expérience universitaire d'étudiants en arts et en sciences inscrits à une institution de moyenne importance dans l'est du Canada. Nos intentions sont: 1) d'établir le contexte dans lequel les étudiants accomplissent leur travail scolaire, 2) de documenter en quoi consiste cette expérience et 3) de décrire quelques-unes de leurs impressions sur le système d'éducation supérieure. Bien que la plupart des étudiants poursuivent des buts professionnels, ils s'intéressent aussi vivement à acquérir une éducation générale à bases solides. Les étudiants de premier cycle assistent à la plupart de leurs cours, se sont voués à compléter leurs études, et travaillent diligemment afin de réaliser leurs buts malgré ce que beaucoup d'entre eux estiment être des programmes exigeants. Toutefois, ils ne sont pas entièrement satisfaits des services qu'ils reçoivent en échange de leurs frais de scolarité et des impôts prélevés aux Canadiens. Alors que le degré de satisfaction varie selon les services offerts, il est clair que des améliorations s'imposent dans plusieurs domaines. Plus précisément, nos donnés suggèrent que les universités cherchant à améliorer l'expérience des étudiants au niveau du premier cycle devraient se proposer comme buts prioritaires d'encourager un enseignement plus efficace et de mieux l'évaluer, de réduire la taille des classes, de favoriser l'interaction formelle et informelle entre les professeurs et les étudiants, d'améliorer la qualité des services d'orientation scolaire, et de promouvoir la création de programmes d'aide financière plus équitable pour les étudiants

    Endometrial response to IVF hormonal manipulation: Comparative analysis of menopausal, down regulated and natural cycles

    BACKGROUND: Uterine luminal epithelial cell response to different hormonal strategies was examined to determine commonality when an endometrium attains a receptive, stimulated, morphological profile that may lead to successful implantation. METHODS: Endometrial biopsies from 3 cohorts of patients were compared. The tissue samples taken from these patients were categorized into 8 different groups according to their baseline and the hormone regime used. RESULTS: Pre-treatment natural cycle tissue was variable in appearance. Downregulation with a GnRH analogue tissue appeared menopausal in character. HRT after downregulation resulted in tissue uniformity. HRT in menopause resulted in a 'lush' epithelial surface. HST in the natural cycle improved the morphology with significant difference in secretion between the two regimes examined. CONCLUSIONS: Down regulation plus HRT standardized surface appearance but tissue response is significantly different from the natural cycle, natural cycle plus HRT or menopause plus HRT. HRT in menopause reinstates tissue to a state similar to a natural cycle but significantly different from a natural cycle plus HST. HST with a natural cycle is similar to tissue from the natural cycle but significant differences reflect the influence of the particular hormones present (at any point) within the cycle

    Almost commuting self-adjoint matrices --- the real and self-dual cases

    We show that a pair of almost commuting self-adjoint, symmetric matrices is close to a pair of commuting self-adjoint, symmetric matrices (in a uniform way). Moreover we prove that the same holds with self-dual in place of symmetric. The notion of self-dual Hermitian matrices is important in physics when studying fermionic systems that have time reversal symmetry. Since a symmetric, self-adjoint matrix is real, we get a real version of Huaxin Lin's famous theorem on almost commuting matrices. Similarly the self-dual case gives a version for matrices over the quaternions. We prove analogous results for element of real C^*-algebras of "low rank." In particular, these stronger results apply to paths of almost commuting Hermitian matrices that are real or self-dual. Along the way we develop a theory of semiprojectivity for real C^*-algebras.Comment: Expanded references. 33 page

    Poplar phyllosphere harbors disparate isoprene-degrading bacteria

    The climate-active gas isoprene (2-methyl-1,3-butadiene) is released to the atmosphere in huge quantities, almost equaling that of methane, yet we know little about the biological cycling of isoprene in the environment. Although bacteria capable of growth on isoprene as the sole source of carbon and energy have previously been isolated from soils and sediments, no microbiological studies have targeted the major source of isoprene and examined the phyllosphere of isoprene-emitting trees for the presence of degraders of this abundant carbon source. Here, we identified isoprene-degrading bacteria in poplar tree-derived microcosms by DNA stable isotope probing. The genomes of isoprene-degrading taxa were reconstructed, putative isoprene metabolic genes were identified, and isoprene-related gene transcription was analyzed by shotgun metagenomics and metatranscriptomics. Gram-positive bacteria of the genus Rhodococcus proved to be the dominant isoprene degraders, as previously found in soil. However, a wider diversity of isoprene utilizers was also revealed, notably Variovorax, a genus not previously associated with this trait. This finding was confirmed by expression of the isoprene monooxygenase from Variovorax in a heterologous host. A Variovorax strain that could grow on isoprene as the sole carbon and energy source was isolated. Analysis of its genome confirmed that it contained isoprene metabolic genes with an identical layout and high similarity to those identified by DNA-stable isotope probing and metagenomics. This study provides evidence of a wide diversity of isoprene-degrading bacteria in the isoprene-emitting tree phyllosphere and greatly enhances our understanding of the biodegradation of this important metabolite and climate-active gas

    A content analysis in reverse logistics: a review

    The purpose of this paper is to provide a comprehensive review in the various publications on the concept of Reverse Logistics (RL) and the related areas within the period 1998-2012. The content analysis approach has been opted to collect the relevant information from different books, journals, and conferences. A broad review of literature in RL from its emergence until the recent discussions have been analyzed and compared in this research. The findings show that, the theoretical construct in RL has been initiated from the conjunction features in the waste management and logistics activities. This idea had been developed by introducing the new term as RL and its definitions and contents such as the activities; key drivers; barriers to use; material flow, and networks in RL. Furthermore, the findings present the various modelling in different aspects of RL, for instance, the mathematical modelling by applying the existence methods in Multi Attribute Decision-Making Models (MADM). In addition, the environmental concerns and governmental legislatives matters and impacts, which have been highlighted, recently, on RL have been deliberated. Hence, this paper would assist the researchers and practitioners to obtain a broad review of RL in the last decade and, also provide an agenda for the future researches

    Interleukin-6 gene (IL-6): a possible role in brain morphology in the healthy adult brain

    Background: Cytokines such as interleukin 6 (IL-6) have been implicated in dual functions in neuropsychiatric disorders. Little is known about the genetic predisposition to neurodegenerative and neuroproliferative properties of cytokine genes. In this study the potential dual role of several IL-6 polymorphisms in brain morphology is investigated. Methodology: In a large sample of healthy individuals (N = 303), associations between genetic variants of IL-6 (rs1800795; rs1800796, rs2069833, rs2069840) and brain volume (gray matter volume) were analyzed using voxel-based morphometry (VBM). Selection of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) followed a tagging SNP approach (e.g., Stampa algorigthm), yielding a capture 97.08% of the variation in the IL-6 gene using four tagging SNPs. Principal findings/results: In a whole-brain analysis, the polymorphism rs1800795 (−174 C/G) showed a strong main effect of genotype (43 CC vs. 150 CG vs. 100 GG; x = 24, y = −10, z = −15; F(2,286) = 8.54, puncorrected = 0.0002; pAlphaSim-corrected = 0.002; cluster size k = 577) within the right hippocampus head. Homozygous carriers of the G-allele had significantly larger hippocampus gray matter volumes compared to heterozygous subjects. None of the other investigated SNPs showed a significant association with grey matter volume in whole-brain analyses. Conclusions/significance: These findings suggest a possible neuroprotective role of the G-allele of the SNP rs1800795 on hippocampal volumes.
