    ASCA Discovery of an X-ray Pulsar in the Error Box of SGR1900+14

    We present a 2 - 10 keV ASCA observation of the field around the soft gamma repeater SGR1900+14. One quiescent X-ray source was detected in this observation, and it was in the SGR error box. In 2 - 10 keV X-rays, its spectrum may be fit by a power law with index -2.2, and its unabsorbed flux is 9.6 x 10^-12 erg cm^-2 s^-1. We also find a clear 5.16 s period. The properties of the three well-studied soft gamma repeaters are remarkably similar to one another, and provide evidence that all of them are associated with young, strongly magnetized neutron stars in supernova remnants.Comment: Accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal Letter

    Fast ignition driven by quasi-monoenergetic ions: Optimal ion type and reduction of ignition energies with an ion beam array

    Fast ignition of inertial fusion targets driven by quasi-monoenergetic ion beams is investigated by means of numerical simulations. Light and intermediate ions such as lithium, carbon, aluminium and vanadium have been considered. Simulations show that the minimum ignition energies of an ideal configuration of compressed Deuterium-Tritium are almost independent on the ion atomic number. However, they are obtained for increasing ion energies, which scale, approximately, as Z^2, where Z is the ion atomic number. Assuming that the ion beam can be focused into 10 {\mu}m spots, a new irradiation scheme is proposed to reduce the ignition energies. The combination of intermediate Z ions, such as 5.5 GeV vanadium, and the new irradiation scheme allows a reduction of the number of ions required for ignition by, roughly, three orders of magnitude when compared with the standard proton fast ignition scheme

    Statistical Analysis of Spectral Line Candidates in Gamma-Ray Burst GRB870303

    The Ginga data for the gamma-ray burst GRB870303 exhibit low-energy dips in two temporally distinct spectra, denoted S1 and S2. S1, spanning 4 s, exhibits a single line candidate at ~ 20 keV, while S2, spanning 9 s, exhibits apparently harmonically spaced line candidates at ~ 20 and 40 keV. We evaluate the statistical evidence for these lines, using phenomenological continuum and line models which in their details are independent of the distance scale to gamma-ray bursts. We employ the methodologies based on both frequentist and Bayesian statistical inference that we develop in Freeman et al. (1999b). These methodologies utilize the information present in the data to select the simplest model that adequately describes the data from among a wide range of continuum and continuum-plus-line(s) models. This ensures that the chosen model does not include free parameters that the data deem unnecessary and that would act to reduce the frequentist significance and Bayesian odds of the continuum-plus-line(s) model. We calculate the significance of the continuum-plus-line(s) models using the Chi-Square Maximum Likelihood Ratio test. We describe a parametrization of the exponentiated Gaussian absorption line shape that makes the probability surface in parameter space better-behaved, allowing us to estimate analytically the Bayesian odds. The significance of the continuum-plus-line models requested by the S1 and S2 data are 3.6 x 10^-5 and 1.7 x 10^-4 respectively, with the odds favoring them being 114:1 and 7:1. We also apply our methodology to the combined (S1+S2) data.     Fracture mechanics approach to design analysis of notches, steps and internal cut-outs in planar components

    A new approach to the assessment and optimization of geometric stress-concentrating features is proposed on the basis of the correspondence between sharp crack or corner stressfield intensity factors and conventional elastic stress concentration factors (SCFs) for radiused transitions. This approach complements the application of finite element analysis (FEA) and the use of standard SCF data from the literature. The method makes it possible to develop closed-form solutions for SCFs in cases where corresponding solutions for the sharp crack geometries exist. This is helpful in the context of design optimization. The analytical basis of the correspondence is shown, together with the limits on applicability where stress-free boundaries near the stress concentrating feature are present or adjacent features interact. Examples are given which compare parametric results derived from FEA with closed-form solutions based on the proposed method. New information is given on the stress state at a 90° corner or width step, where the magnitude of the stress field intensity is related to that of the corresponding crack geometry. This correspondence enables the user to extend further the application of crack-tip stress-field intensity information to square-cornered steps, external U-grooves, and internal cut-outs

    A combined study of heat and mass transfer in an infant incubator with an overhead screen

    The main objective of this study is to investigate the major physical processes taking place inside an infant incubator, before and after modifications have been made to its interior chamber. The modification involves the addition of an overhead screen to decrease radiation heat losses from the infant placed inside the incubator. The present study investigates the effect of these modifications on the convective heat flux from the infant’s body to the surrounding environment inside the incubator. A combined analysis of airflow and heat transfer due to conduction, convection, radiation and evaporation has been performed, in order to calculate the temperature and velocity fields inside the incubator before and after the design modification. Due to the geometrical complexity of the model, Computer-Aided Design (CAD) applications were used to generate a computer-based model. All numerical calculations have been performed using the commercial Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) package FLUENT, together with in-house routines used for managing purposes and User-Defined Functions (UDFs) which extend the basic solver capabilities. Numerical calculations have been performed for three different air inlet temperatures: 32, 34 and 36ºC. The study shows a decrease of the radiative and convective heat losses when the overhead screen is present. The results obtained were numerically verified as well as compared with results available in the literature from investigations of dry heat losses from infant manikins

    The nucleoside analog GS-441524 strongly inhibits feline infectious peritonitis (FIP) virus in tissue culture and experimental cat infection studies.

    Feline infectious peritonitis (FIP) is a common and highly lethal coronavirus disease of domestic cats. Recent studies of diseases caused by several RNA viruses in people and other species indicate that antiviral therapy may be effective against FIP in cats. The small molecule nucleoside analog GS-441524 is a molecular precursor to a pharmacologically active nucleoside triphosphate molecule. These analogs act as an alternative substrate and RNA-chain terminator of viral RNA dependent RNA polymerase. We determined that GS-441524 was non-toxic in feline cells at concentrations as high as 100 uM and effectively inhibited FIPV replication in cultured CRFK cells and in naturally infected feline peritoneal macrophages at concentrations as low as 1 uM. We determined the pharmacokinetics of GS-441524 in cats in vivo and established a dosage that would sustain effective blood levels for 24 h. In an experimental FIPV infection of cats, GS-441524 treatment caused a rapid reversal of disease signs and return to normality with as little as two weeks of treatment in 10/10 cats and with no apparent toxicity
