Business model innovations for renewable energy prosumer development in Germany
In Germany, the number of renewable energy prosumers has increased rapidly since 2000. However, the development of prosumers has faced and will continue to face various economic, social, and technological challenges, which have triggered the emergence of a number of innovative business models (BM). This paper enriches the empirical basis for prosumer-oriented BMs by investigating two BM innovations in Germany (P2P electricity trading and aggregation of small-size prosumers) drawing on business model and socio-technical transition theories. A mix of qualitative data collection methods, including document analysis and semi-structured expert interviews, was applied. We found that while both BMs can potentially address the challenges associated with renewable energy prosumer development in Germany, small-scale prosumersâ participation in both BMs has been limited so far. We identified various internal and external drivers and barriers for scaling up these BMs for prosumer development in Germany. Despite these barriers, both aggregation and centralized P2P targeting prosumers may potentially be also taken up by incumbent market actors such as utilities. Decentralized P2P on the other hand still faces significant internal and external barriers for upscaling. Based on the analysis, the paper provides policy recommendations with respect to the identified drivers and barriers. From a theoretical perspective, our findings provide further evidence to challenge the dichotomous understanding of niche actors and incumbents, the latter of which are often theorized to be resistant to radical innovations
Symbolic Implementation of Extensions of the Boltzmann Solver
is a Python-based framework for the fast computation of
cosmological model predictions. One of its core features is the symbolic
representation of the Einstein-Boltzmann system of equations. Efficient
code is generated from the symbolic
expressions making use of the package. This enables easy
extensions of the equation system for the implementation of new cosmological
models. We illustrate this with three extensions of the
Boltzmann solver to include a dark energy component with a constant equation of
state, massive neutrinos and a radiation streaming approximation. We describe
the framework, highlighting new features, and the symbolic
implementation of the new models. We compare the predictions
for the CDM model extensions with , both in terms of
accuracy and computational speed. We find a good agreement, to better than 0.1%
when using high-precision settings and a comparable computational speed. Links

Kindlin-3âmediated signaling from multiple integrin classes is required for osteoclast-mediated bone resorption
Loss of kindlin-3 impairs activation of ÎČ1, ÎČ2, and ÎČ3 integrin classes, resulting in osteopetrotic defects in osteoclast adhesion and spreading
Orbital-driven Rashba effect in a binary honeycomb monolayer AgTe
The Rashba effect is fundamental to the physics of two-dimensional electron
systems and underlies a variety of spintronic phenomena. It has been proposed
that the formation of Rashba-type spin splittings originates microscopically
from the existence of orbital angular momentum (OAM) in the Bloch wave
functions. Here, we present detailed experimental evidence for this OAM-based
origin of the Rashba effect by angle-resolved photoemission (ARPES) and
two-photon photoemission (2PPE) experiments for a monolayer AgTe on Ag(111).
Using quantitative low-energy electron diffraction (LEED) analysis we determine
the structural parameters and the stacking of the honeycomb overlayer with
picometer precision. Based on an orbital-symmetry analysis in ARPES and
supported by first-principles calculations, we unequivocally relate the
presence and absence of Rashba-type spin splittings in different bands of AgTe
to the existence of OAM
Topological band inversion in HgTe(001): surface and bulk signatures from photoemission
HgTe is a versatile topological material and has enabled the realization of a
variety of topological states, including two- and three-dimensional (3D)
topological insulators and topological semimetals. Nevertheless, a quantitative
understanding of its electronic structure remains challenging, in particular
due to coupling of the Te 5p-derived valence electrons to Hg 5d core states at
shallow binding energy. We present a joint experimental and theoretical study
of the electronic structure in strained HgTe(001) films in the 3D
topological-insulator regime, based on angle-resolved photoelectron
spectroscopy and density functional theory. The results establish detailed
agreement in terms of (i) electronic band dispersions and orbital symmetries,
(ii) surface and bulk contributions to the electronic structure, and (iii) the
importance of Hg 5d states in the valence-band formation. Supported by theory,
our experiments directly image the paradigmatic band inversion in HgTe,
underlying its non-trivial band topology
