Having Our Say: Engaging ILL and Liaison Librarians in Metadata Curation in EDS

    Get PDF
Deciding whether to support discovery of metadata for unsubscribed content raises a lot of questions for technical and public services librarians, from the philosophical to the pragmatic. Doing so requires careful curation and monitoring of metadata sources, and benefits from library-wide input. During this session, presenters describe their process for vetting metadata collections with ILL and liaison librarians for inclusion in EDS. This involves a three-step evaluation of collections for overall metadata quality, likelihood of ILL fulfillment, and value to the collection. Over the course of this evaluation, technical services, ILL, and liaison librarians each “have their say” on whether metadata collections merit inclusion in the discovery layer. Subsequently, ILL and liaison play a critical role monitoring these sources, and supporting decisions to de-commission sources when needed

Get the eTeam, Stat! Managing ERA Troubleshooting Triage Tier by Tier

Triage of electronic resource access (ERA) troubleshooting takes planning and rarely is straightforward. Who reported the problem? How visible is it? How long will it take to resolve and who is involved? Without a good triage plan, ERA troubleshooting can spin out of control fast. This poster session will present a three-part tiering scheme for performing triage on ERA troubleshooting requests reported to the eTeam, the ERA response team at Georgia Southern University in Statesboro, GA. This framework evaluates requests in terms of 1) origin, scope and urgency of request; 2) required stakeholder input to resolve the request; and 3) internal and external communication needs. To date, this framework has significantly enhanced prioritization and resolution of a variety of ERA requests, and have improved stakeholder involvement and awareness. This framework is generalized and extensible, so we feel that sharing it at ALA will have mutual benefits, for other institutions who will see the benefits of active ERA triage and may get some ideas from our approach, and for Georgia Southern as we learn what other institutions are doing to manage ERA-related requests and workflows

This outline does not correspond to any particular grant funder’s DMP requirements; however, you may find it useful for general data management planning and if you are applying to a funding agency that requires a DMP but does not provide specific guidance on what your plan should contain. Links, Links Everywhere: Supporting Creation of Reliable Access URLS

    Get PDF
Creating reliable links to library resources is a challenging task, for patrons and library personnel alike! Databases have different linking requirements, ranging from identifying the correct base URL to revising the URL for remote authentication. Often, databases’ built-in linking features are unreliable, especially for off-campus users. Linking isn’t just a technical issue, it’s an equity issue. To address this challenge, we have developed a dedicated “Linking to Library Resources” guide that includes unique link creation tutorials for each database we support. These linking tutorials appear in our database detailed descriptions, library personnel use them for staff training and reference, and liaison librarians share them with faculty when creating URLs for their courses. This poster presents challenges of creating reliable access URLs, looks at the “Linking to Library Resources” guide and tutorials in detail, and considers different ways this resource can be used to support equitable access to library resources
