Free vibration of a three-layered sandwich beam using the dynamic stiffness method and experiment
In this paper, an accurate dynamic stiffness model for a three-layered sandwich
beam of unequal thicknesses is developed and subsequently used to investigate
its free vibration characteristics. Each layer of the beam is idealised by the
Timoshenko beam theory and the combined system is reduced to a tenth-order
system using symbolic computation. An exact dynamic stiffness matrix is then
developed by relating amplitudes of harmonically varying loads to those of the
responses. The resulting dynamic stiffness matrix is used with particular
reference to the Wittrick-Williams algorithm to carry out the free vibration
analysis of a few illustrative examples. The accuracy of the theory is confirmed
both by published literature and by experiment. The paper closes with some

Stochastic orbital migration of small bodies in Saturn's rings
Many small moonlets, creating propeller structures, have been found in
Saturn's rings by the Cassini spacecraft. We study the dynamical evolution of
such 20-50m sized bodies which are embedded in Saturn's rings. We estimate the
importance of various interaction processes with the ring particles on the
moonlet's eccentricity and semi-major axis analytically. For low ring surface
densities, the main effects on the evolution of the eccentricity and the
semi-major axis are found to be due to collisions and the gravitational
interaction with particles in the vicinity of the moonlet. For large surface
densities, the gravitational interaction with self-gravitating wakes becomes
important.
We also perform realistic three dimensional, collisional N-body simulations
with up to a quarter of a million particles. A new set of pseudo shear periodic
boundary conditions is used which reduces the computational costs by an order
of magnitude compared to previous studies. Our analytic estimates are confirmed
to within a factor of two.
On short timescales the evolution is always dominated by stochastic effects
caused by collisions and gravitational interaction with self-gravitating ring
particles. These result in a random walk of the moonlet's semi-major axis. The
eccentricity of the moonlet quickly reaches an equilibrium value due to
collisional damping. The average change in semi-major axis of the moonlet after
100 orbital periods is 10-100m. This translates to an offset in the azimuthal
direction of several hundred kilometres. We expect that such a shift is easily

High-resolution tracking in a GEM-Emulsion detector
SHiP (Search for Hidden Particles) is a beam dump experiment proposed at the
CERN SPS aiming at the observation of long lived particles very weakly coupled
with ordinary matter mostly produced in the decay of charmed hadrons. The beam
dump facility of SHiP is also a copious factory of neutrinos of all three kinds
and therefore a dedicated neutrino detector is foreseen in the SHiP apparatus.
The neutrino detector exploits the Emulsion Cloud Chamber technique with a
modular structure, alternating walls of target units and planes of electronic
detectors providing the time stamp to the event. GEM detectors are one of the
possible choices for this task. This paper reports the results of the first
exposure to a muon beam at CERN of a new hybrid chamber, obtained by coupling a
GEM chamber and an emulsion detector. Thanks to the micrometric accuracy of the
emulsion detector, the position resolution of the GEM chamber as a function of
the particle inclination was evaluated in two configurations, with and without
the magnetic fiel
Calcified amorphous tumor of the heart in an adult female: a case report
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Introduction</p> <p>Cardiac calcified amorphous tumor is a rare, non-neoplastic intra-cavity cardiac mass composed of calcium deposits in a background of amorphous degenerating fibrinous material. Only a few cases of this rare lesion have been reported in the available literature. Clinico-pathological differentiation of this lesion from calcified atrial myxoma, calcified thrombi or other cardiac neoplasms is extremely difficult; hence pathologic examination is the mainstay of diagnosis. To the best of our knowledge this entity has not been reported in the Indian literature.</p> <p>Case presentation</p> <p>A 40-year-old woman of Indian origin presented with progressive dyspnea, fatigue and cough. She was diagnosed as having a calcified right atrial mass. The mass was excised. Histologic examination revealed the mass to be composed of amorphous eosinophilic fibrin with dense calcification. No myxomatous tissue was seen and a final diagnosis of calcified amorphous tumor of the heart was rendered.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Calcified amorphous tumor is a rare cardiac lesion with an excellent outcome following complete surgical removal. Since clinico-radiologic differentiation from other cardiac masses is not possible in most cases, histopathological examination is the only modality for diagnosis. Hence, histopathologists should be aware of this rare entity in the differential diagnoses of cardiac mass.</p
Stability of Terrestrial Planets in the Habitable Zone of Gl 777 A, HD 72659, Gl 614, 47 Uma and HD 4208
We have undertaken a thorough dynamical investigation of five extrasolar
planetary systems using extensive numerical experiments. The systems Gl 777 A,
HD 72659, Gl 614, 47 Uma and HD 4208 were examined concerning the question of
whether they could host terrestrial like planets in their habitable zones
(=HZ). First we investigated the mean motion resonances between fictitious
terrestrial planets and the existing gas giants in these five extrasolar
systems. Then a fine grid of initial conditions for a potential terrestrial
planet within the HZ was chosen for each system, from which the stability of
orbits was then assessed by direct integrations over a time interval of 1
million years. The computations were carried out using a Lie-series integration
method with an adaptive step size control. This integration method achieves
machine precision accuracy in a highly efficient and robust way, requiring no
special adjustments when the orbits have large eccentricities. The stability of
orbits was examined with a determination of the Renyi entropy, estimated from
recurrence plots, and with a more straight forward method based on the maximum
eccentricity achieved by the planet over the 1 million year integration.
Additionally, the eccentricity is an indication of the habitability of a
terrestrial planet in the HZ; any value of e>0.2 produces a significant
temperature difference on a planet's surface between apoapse and periapse. The
results for possible stable orbits for terrestrial planets in habitable zones
for the five systems are summarized as follows: for Gl 777 A nearly the entire
HZ is stable, for 47 Uma, HD 72659 and HD 4208 terrestrial planets can survive
for a sufficiently long time, while for Gl 614 our results exclude terrestrial
planets moving in stable orbits within the HZ.Comment: 14 pages, 18 figures submitted to A&
The Mre11-Rad50-Nbs1 complex mediates activation of TopBP1 by ATM
The activation of ATR-ATRIP in response to double-stranded DNA breaks (DSBs) depends upon ATM in human cells and Xenopus egg extracts. One important aspect of this dependency involves regulation of TopBP1 by ATM. In Xenopus egg extracts, ATM associates with TopBP1 and thereupon phosphorylates it on S1131. This phosphorylation enhances the capacity of TopBP1 to activate the ATR-ATRIP complex. We show that TopBP1 also interacts with the Mre11-Rad50-Nbs1 (MRN) complex in egg extracts in a checkpoint-regulated manner. This interaction involves the Nbs1 subunit of the complex. ATM can no longer interact with TopBP1 in Nbs1-depleted egg extracts, which suggests that the MRN complex helps to bridge ATM and TopBP1 together. The association between TopBP1 and Nbs1 involves the first pair of BRCT repeats in TopBP1. In addition, the two tandem BRCT repeats of Nbs1 are required for this binding. Functional studies with mutated forms of TopBP1 and Nbs1 suggested that the BRCT-dependent association of these proteins is critical for a normal checkpoint response to DSBs. These findings suggest that the MRN complex is a crucial mediator in the process whereby ATM promotes the TopBP1-dependent activation of ATR-ATRIP in response to DSBs
Determination of the muon charge sign with the dipolar spectrometers of the OPERA experiment
The OPERA long-baseline neutrino-oscillation experiment has observed the
direct appearance of in the CNGS beam. Two large muon
magnetic spectrometers are used to identify muons produced in the
leptonic decay and in interactions by measuring their charge and
momentum. Besides the kinematic analysis of the decays, background
resulting from the decay of charmed particles produced in
interactions is reduced by efficiently identifying the muon track. A new method
for the charge sign determination has been applied, via a weighted angular
matching of the straight track-segments reconstructed in the different parts of
the dipole magnets. Results obtained for Monte Carlo and real data are
presented. Comparison with a method where no matching is used shows a
significant reduction of up to 40\% of the fraction of wrongly determined

Procedure for short-lived particle detection in the OPERA experiment and its application to charm decays
The OPERA experiment, designed to perform the first observation of oscillations in appearance mode through the detection of
the leptons produced in charged current interactions, has
collected data from 2008 to 2012. In the present paper, the procedure developed
to detect particle decays, occurring over distances of the order of 1 mm
from the neutrino interaction point, is described in detail. The results of its
application to the search for charmed hadrons are then presented as a
validation of the methods for appearance detection
Observation of nu_tau appearance in the CNGS beam with the OPERA experiment
The OPERA experiment is searching for nu_mu -> nu_tau oscillations in
appearance mode i.e. via the direct detection of tau leptons in nu_tau charged
current interactions. The evidence of nu_mu -> nu_tau appearance has been
previously reported with three nu_tau candidate events using a sub-sample of
data from the 2008-2012 runs. We report here a fourth nu_tau candidate event,
with the tau decaying into a hadron, found after adding the 2012 run events
without any muon in the final state to the data sample. Given the number of
analysed events and the low background, nu_mu -> nu_tau oscillations are

Prognostic value of Ishak fibrosis stage: Findings from the hepatitis C antiviral long-term treatment against cirrhosis trial
Studies of the prognostic value of Ishak fibrosis stage are lacking. We used multi-year follow-up of the Hepatitis C Antiviral Long-Term Treatment Against Cirrhosis (HALT-C) Trial to determine whether individual Ishak fibrosis stages predicted clinical outcomes in patients with chronic hepatitis C. Baseline liver biopsy specimens from 1050 patients with compensated chronic hepatitis C who had failed combination peginterferon and ribavirin were reviewed by a panel of expert hepatopathologists. Fibrosis was staged with the Ishak scale (ranging from 0 = no fibrosis to 6 = cirrhosis). Biopsy fragmentation and length as well as number of portal tracts were recorded. We compared rates of prespecified clinical outcomes of hepatic decompensation and hepatocellular carcinoma across individual Ishak fibrosis stages. Of 1050 biopsy specimens, 25% were fragmented, 63% longer than 1.5 cm, 69% larger than 10 mm 2 , and 75% had 10 or more portal tracts. Baseline laboratory markers of liver disease severity were worse and the frequency of esophageal varices higher with increasing Ishak stage ( P < 0.0001). The 6-year cumulative incidence of first clinical outcome was 5.6% for stage 2, 16.1% for stage 3, 19.3% for stage 4, 37.8% for stage 5, and 49.3% for stage 6. Among nonfragmented biopsy specimens, the predictive ability of Ishak staging was enhanced; however, no association was observed between Ishak stage and outcomes for fragmented biopsy specimens because of high rates of outcomes for patients with noncirrhotic stages. Similar results were observed with liver transplantation or liver-related death as the outcome. Conclusion : Ishak fibrosis stage predicts clinical outcomes, need for liver transplantation, and liver-related death in patients with chronic hepatitis C. Patients with fragmented biopsy specimens with low Ishak stage may be understaged histologically.
