Entry to Study Expectations of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics Postgraduate Taught Students
There is extensive knowledge of learning and teaching behaviour and practice at undergraduate level, but limited, albeit increasing, of postgraduate taught study. The Postgraduate Experience Project (PEP) was one of 20 projects funded by the Higher Education Funding Council for England to explore ways of widening participation at postgraduate master's level. It was the largest consortium comprising of 11 universities across the UK (9 English, 1 Scottish and 1 Welsh). PEP assessed STEM postgraduate masters students’ learning and teaching experiences and expectations through an online survey during Induction period (Entry to Study survey). The survey explored students’ experiences of previous learning and teaching methods, their understanding of academic feedback and their preferences, as well as their expectation of learning at postgraduate taught level (PGT). This paper presents different student's experiences and expectations by groups such as gender and mode of study. The findings suggest that a ‘one size fits all’ learning and teaching approach to PGT students is not adequate to support the student experience due to the complexity and multiplicity of postgraduate the student's profile, background, needs and expectations

Introduce XBRL To Business Students
This paper informs business instructors and educators about XBRL (Extensible Business Reporting Language) so that they can introduce it to their students and expand their students’ understanding of how it relates to the accounting profession. Even though the financial community has entered a new age with this standardized reporting language, many business educators and even accountants old and new to the profession are not informed about XBRL nor have an idea of its potential benefits. With this paper, educators and students can learn the definition of XBRL, its history, and its current uses. The information educates the reader about the evolution of XBRL over the past two decades as well as its benefits so readers can become aware of the value of this now-worldwide application. The paper includes the SEC and FDIC adoption of this computer language as an international standard that aims to improve the speed, accuracy, and transparency of business reporting
Microlensing of the Lensed Quasar SDSS0924+0219
We analyze V, I and H band HST images and two seasons of R-band monitoring
data for the gravitationally lensed quasar SDSS0924+0219. We clearly see that
image D is a point-source image of the quasar at the center of its host galaxy.
We can easily track the host galaxy of the quasar close to image D because
microlensing has provided a natural coronograph that suppresses the flux of the
quasar image by roughly an order of magnitude. We observe low amplitude,
uncorrelated variability between the four quasar images due to microlensing,
but no correlated variations that could be used to measure a time delay. Monte
Carlo models of the microlensing variability provide estimates of the mean
stellar mass in the lens galaxy (0.02 Msun < M < 1.0 Msun), the accretion disk
size (the disk temperature is 5 x 10^4 K at 3.0 x 10^14 cm < rs < 1.4 x 10^15
cm), and the black hole mass (2.0 x 10^7 Msun < MBH \eta_{0.1}^{-1/2}
(L/LE)^{1/2} < 3.3 x 10^8 Msun), all at 68% confidence. The black hole mass
estimate based on microlensing is consistent with an estimate of MBH = 7.3 +-
2.4 x 10^7 Msun from the MgII emission line width. If we extrapolate the
best-fitting light curve models into the future, we expect the the flux of
images A and B to remain relatively stable and images C and D to brighten. In
particular, we estimate that image D has a roughly 12% probability of
brightening by a factor of two during the next year and a 45% probability of

Prevalence and clinical characteristics of left ventricular dysfunction among elderly patients in general practice setting: cross sectional survey
Objective: To assess the prevalence and clinical characteristics of left ventricular dysfunction among elderly patients in the general practice setting by echocardiographic assessment of ventricular function.
Design: Cross sectional survey.
Setting: Four centre general practice in Poole, Dorset.
Subjects: 817 elderly patients aged 70-84 years.
Main outcomes: Echocardiographic assessment of left ventricular systolic function including measurement of ejection fraction by biplane summation method where possible, clinical symptoms, and signs of left ventricular dysfunction.
Results: The overall prevalence of left ventricular systolic dysfunction was 7.5% (95% confidence interval 5.8% to 9.5%); mild dysfunction (5.0%) was considerably more prevalent than moderate (1.6%) or severe dysfunction (0.7%). Measurement of ejection fraction was possible in 82% of patients (n=667): in patients categorised as having mild, moderate, or severe dysfunction, the mean ejection fraction was 48% (SD 12.0), 38% (8.1), and 26% (7.9) respectively. At all ages the prevalence was much higher in men than in women (odds ratio 5.1, 95% confidence interval 2.6 to 10.1). No clinical symptom or sign was both sensitive and specific. In around half the patients with ventricular dysfunction (52%, 32/61) heart failure had not been previously diagnosed.
Conclusions: Unrecognised left ventricular dysfunction is a common problem in elderly patients in the general practice setting. Appropriate treatment with angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitors has the potential to reduce hospitalisation and mortality in these patients, but diagnosis should not be based on clinical history and examination alone. Screening is feasible in general practice, but it should not be implemented until the optimum method of identifying left ventricular dysfunction is clarified, and the cost effectiveness of screening has been shown
First-principles prediction of redox potentials in transition-metal compounds with LDA+U
First-principles calculations within the Local Density Approximation (LDA) or
Generalized Gradient Approximation (GGA), though very successful, are known to
underestimate redox potentials, such as those at which lithium intercalates in
transition metal compounds. We argue that this inaccuracy is related to the
lack of cancellation of electron self-interaction errors in LDA/GGA and can be
improved by using the DFT+ method with a self-consistent evaluation of the
parameter. We show that, using this approach, the experimental lithium
intercalation voltages of a number of transition metal compounds, including the
olivine LiMPO (M=Mn, Fe Co, Ni), layered LiMO (Co,
Ni) and spinel-like LiMO (M=Mn, Co), can be reproduced

Cortical distance determines whether flankers cause crowding or the tilt illusion
Differences between target and flanker orientations become exaggerated in the tilt illusion. However, small differences sometimes go unnoticed. This small-angle assimilation shares many similarities with other types of visual crowding but is typically found only with small and/or hard-to-see stimuli. In Experiment 1, we investigated the effect of stimulus visibility on orientation bias using relatively large stimuli. The introduction of visual noise increased the perceived similarity of target and flanker orientations at retinal eccentricities of 4- and 10-; however, small-angle assimilation was found only at 10-. The effects of eccentricity were reduced in Experiment 2, when our stimuli were “M-scaled” for equal cortical coverage. Further support for a cortical substrate was obtained in Experiment 3, in which the effects of target–flanker separation were measured. When biases from all three experiments are expressed as a fraction of the inducing flankers’ angle, and plotted as a function of the approximate cortical separation between the target and its closest flanker, they form a curve like the cross-section of half a Mexican hat. We conclude that the tilt illusion and small-angle assimilation reflect opponent influences on orientation perception. The strength of each influence increases with cortical proximity and stimulus visibility, but the one responsible for assimilation has a lesser extent
Frequency response in surface-potential driven electro-hydrodynamics
Using a Fourier approach we offer a general solution to calculations of slip
velocity within the circuit description of the electro-hydrodynamics in a
binary electrolyte confined by a plane surface with a modulated surface
potential. We consider the case with a spatially constant intrinsic surface
capacitance where the net flow rate is in general zero while harmonic rolls as
well as time-averaged vortex-like components may exist depending on the spatial
symmetry and extension of the surface potential. In general the system displays
a resonance behavior at a frequency corresponding to the inverse RC time of the
system. Different surface potentials share the common feature that the
resonance frequency is inversely proportional to the characteristic length
scale of the surface potential. For the asymptotic frequency dependence above
resonance we find a 1/omega^2 power law for surface potentials with either an
even or an odd symmetry. Below resonance we also find a power law omega^alpha
with alpha being positive and dependent of the properties of the surface
potential. Comparing a tanh potential and a sech potential we qualitatively
find the same slip velocity, but for the below-resonance frequency response the
two potentials display different power law asymptotics with alpha=1 and
