Exploration in stochastic algorithms: An application on MAX-MIN Ant System
In this paper a definition of the exploration performed by stochastic algorithms is proposed. It is based on the observation through cluster analysis of the solutions generated during a run. The probabilities associated by an algorithm to solution components are considered. Moreover, a consequent method for quantifying the exploration is provided. Such a measurement is applied to MAX-MIN Ant System. GASP XIX: AGN and their outflows at the center of jellyfish galaxies
The GASP survey, based on MUSE data, is unveiling the properties of the gas
in the so-called "jellyfish" galaxies: these are cluster galaxies with
spectacular evidence of gas stripping by ram pressure. In a previous paper, we
selected the seven GASP galaxies with the most extended tentacles of ionized
gas, and based on individual diagnostic diagrams concluded that at least five
of them present clear evidence for an Active Galactic Nucleus. Here we present
a more detailed analysis of the emission lines properties in these galaxies.
Our comparison of several emission line ratios with both AGN and shock models
show that photoionization by the AGN is the dominant ionization mechanism. This
conclusion is strengthened by the analysis of luminosities, the
presence of nuclear iron coronal lines and extended ( kpc) emission line
regions ionized by the AGN in some of these galaxies. From emission line
profiles, we find the presence of outflows in four galaxies, and derive mass
outflow rates, timescales and kinetic energy of the outflows.Comment: 20 pages, 10 Figure
landslide susceptibility of the prato pistoia lucca provinces tuscany italy
ABSTRACTWe mapped landslide susceptibility in the provinces of Lucca, Pistoia and Prato (central Italy), a 3103â
km2 territory that approximately corresponds to the portion of Tuscany principally affected by landslides. We used a methodology based on a treebagger random forest. The input parameters used for the susceptibility assessment are curvature, flow accumulation, topographic wetness index, elevation, profile curvature, planar curvature, slope gradient, aspect, land use and lithology. The map was validated providing satisfactory results (AUCâ=â0.84). The map classifies the study area into four susceptibility classes that identify areas with different probabilities of being affected by landslides. The Main Map represents a useful instrument to assist land planning, development of mitigation measures and landslide risk management. Moreover, it could be used in further research addressing quantitative hazard and risk assessment
GASP. XVI. Does cosmic web enhancement turn on star formation in galaxies?
Galaxy filaments are a peculiar environment, and their impact on the galaxy
properties is still controversial. Exploiting the data from the GAs Stripping
Phenomena in galaxies with MUSE (GASP), we provide the first characterisation
of the spatially resolved properties of galaxies embedded in filaments in the
local Universe. The four galaxies we focus on show peculiar ionised gas
distributions: Halpha clouds have been observed beyond four times the effective
radius. The gas kinematics, metallicity map and the ratios of emission line
fluxes confirm that they do belong to the galaxy gas disk, the analysis of
their spectra shows that very weak stellar continuum is associated to them.
Similarly, the star formation history and luminosity weighted age maps point to
a recent formation of such clouds. The clouds are powered by star formation,
and are characterised by intermediate values of dust absorption. We hypothesise
a scenario in which the observed features are due to "Cosmic Web Enhancement":
we are most likely witnessing galaxies passing through or flowing within
filaments that assist the gas cooling and increase the extent of the star
formation in the densest regions in the circumgalactic gas. Targeted

Enhanced star formation in both disks and ram pressure stripped tails of GASP jellyfish galaxies
Exploiting the data from the GAs Stripping Phenomena in galaxies with MUSE
(GASP) program, we compare the integrated Star Formation Rate- Mass relation
(SFR-M_ast) relation of 42 cluster galaxies undergoing ram pressure stripping
("stripping galaxies") to that of 32 field and cluster undisturbed galaxies.
Theoretical predictions have so far led to contradictory conclusions about
whether ram pressure can enhance the star formation in the gas disks and tails
or not and until now a statistically significant observed sample of stripping
galaxies was lacking. We find that stripping galaxies occupy the upper envelope
of the control sample SFR-M_ast relation, showing a systematic enhancement of
the SFR at any given mass. The star formation enhancement occurs in the disk
(0.2 dex), and additional star formation takes place in the tails. Our results
suggest that strong ram pressure stripping events can moderately enhance the
star formation also in the disk prior to gas removal.Comment: ApJL in pres
Methodology and evidence from a case study in Rome to increase pedestrian safety along home-to-school routes
Home-to-school routes are very sensitive areas: they represent, for children, a learning tool for their everyday activities, but if poorly designed, maintained and equipped they can expose them to traffic risks. Sidewalksâ inappropriate level of service and poor maintenance, especially, are main factors contributing to walking unsuitability, thus to poor comfort and safety levels for young pedestrians, and more in general for all the vulnerable non-motorized road users. This paper deals with a methodology specifically developed to highlight the quality of the urban environment where the home-to-school routes are located, according to four main criteria: wellbeing, usage, appearance, and safety and security. Each criterion is associated with a checklist including the most relevant features to assess, with a focus on maintenance as a key parameter to create safe and comfortable routes to school. An application, a case study in Rome, where the lack of regular maintenance results into a network of unsafe sidewalks, is also presented, analyzing three different areas where a number of schools are located. Detours when approaching school premises were surveyed, due to the levels of distresses and linked to the poor comfort and safety levels. As the mutual influence of built environment over road safety and maintenance requirements for home-to-school paths is not largely investigated thus far, the paperâs goal is to provide advanced knowledge for studies and applications further afield
GASP. XII. The variety of physical processes occurring in a single galaxy group in formation
GAs Stripping Phenomena in galaxies with MUSE (GASP) is a program aimed at
studying gas removal processes in nearby galaxies in different environments. We
present the study of four galaxies that are part of the same group (z= 0.06359)
and highlight the multitude of mechanisms affecting the spatially resolved
properties of the group members. One galaxy is passive and shows a regular
stellar kinematics. The analysis of its star formation history indicates that
the quenching process lasted for a few Gyr and that the star formation declined
throughout the disk in a similar way, consistent with strangulation. Another
galaxy is characterised by a two-component stellar disk with an extended gas
disk that formed a few 10^8 yr ago, most likely as a consequence of gas
accretion. The third member is a spiral galaxy at the edges of the group, but
embedded in a filament. We hypothesise that the compression exerted by the
sparse intergalactic medium on the dense circumgalactic gas switches on star
formation in a number of clouds surrounding the galaxy ("cosmic web
enhancement"). Alternatively, also ram pressure stripping might be effective.
Finally, the fourth galaxy is a spiral with a truncated ionised gas disk and an
undisturbed stellar kinematics. An analytical model of the galaxy's restoring
pressure, and its location and velocity within the cluster, suggest ram
pressure is the most likely physical mechanism in action. This is the first
optical evidence for stripping in groups.Comment: 19 page, 12 figure
Structural and dynamical modeling of WINGS clusters. I. The distribution of cluster galaxies of different morphological classes within regular and irregular clusters
[Abridged] We use the WINGS database to select a sample of 67 nearby galaxy
clusters with at least 30 spectroscopic members each. 53 of these clusters do
not show evidence of substructures in phase-space, while 14 do. We estimate the
virial radii and circular velocities of the 67 clusters by a variety of proxies
(velocity dispersion, X-ray temperature, and richness) and use these estimates
to build stack samples from these 53 and 14 clusters ('Reg' and 'Irr' stacks,
respectively). We determine the number-density and velocity-dispersion profiles
(VDPs) of E, S0, and Sp+Irr (S) galaxies in the Reg and Irr samples,
separately, and fit models to these profiles. The number density profiles of E,
S0, and S galaxies are adequately described by either a NFW or a cored King
model, both for the Reg and Irr samples, with a slight preference for the NFW
model. The spatial distribution concentration increases from the S to the S0
and to the E populations, both in the Reg and the Irr stacks, reflecting the
well-known morphology-radius relation. Reg clusters have a more concentrated
spatial distribution of E and S0 galaxies than Irr clusters, while the spatial
distributions of S galaxies in Reg and Irr clusters are similar. We propose a
new phenomenological model that provides acceptable fits to the VDP of all our
galaxy samples. The VDPs become steeper and with a higher normalization from E
to S0 to S galaxies. The S0 VDP is close to that of E galaxies in Reg clusters,
and intermediate between those of E and S galaxies in Irr clusters. Our results
suggest that S galaxies are a recently accreted cluster population, that take
less than 3 Gyr to evolve into S0 galaxies after accretion, and in doing so
modify their phase-space distribution, approaching that of cluster ellipticals.
While in Reg clusters this evolutionary process is mostly completed, it is
