Mobile Interface for Content-Based Image Management
People make more and more use of digital image acquisition devices to capture screenshots of their everyday life. The growing number of personal pictures raise the problem of their classification. Some of the authors proposed an automatic technique for personal photo album management dealing with multiple aspects (i.e., people, time and background) in a homogenous way. In this paper we discuss a solution that allows mobile users to remotely access such technique by means of their mobile phones, almost from everywhere, in a pervasive fashion. This allows users to classify pictures they store on their devices. The whole solution is presented, with particular regard to the user interface implemented on the mobile phone, along with some experimental results
Control of Recoil Losses in Nanomechanical SiN Membrane Resonators
In the context of a recoil damping analysis, we have designed and produced a
membrane resonator equipped with a specific on-chip structure working as a
"loss shield" for a circular membrane. In this device the vibrations of the
membrane, with a quality factor of , reach the limit set by the intrinsic
dissipation in silicon nitride, for all the modes and regardless of the modal
shape, also at low frequency. Guided by our theoretical model of the loss
shield, we describe the design rationale of the device, which can be used as
effective replacement of commercial membrane resonators in advanced
optomechanical setups, also at cryogenic temperatures
Assisted labeling for spam account detection on twitter
Online Social Networks (OSNs) have become increasingly popular both because of their ease of use and their availability through almost any smart device. Unfortunately, these characteristics make OSNs also target of users interested in performing malicious activities, such as spreading malware and performing phishing attacks. In this paper we address the problem of spam detection on Twitter providing a novel method to support the creation of large-scale annotated datasets. More specifically, URL inspection and tweet clustering are performed in order to detect some common behaviors of spammers and legitimate users. Finally, the manual annotation effort is further reduced by grouping similar users according to some characteristics. Experimental results show the effectiveness of the proposed approach
A Smart Assistant for Visual Recognition of Painted Scenes
Nowadays, smart devices allow people to easily interact with the surrounding environment thanks to existing communication infrastructures, i.e., 3G/4G/5G or WiFi. In the context of a smart museum, data shared by visitors can be used to provide innovative services aimed to improve their cultural experience. In this paper, we consider as case study the painted wooden ceiling of the Sala Magna of Palazzo Chiaramonte in Palermo, Italy and we present an intelligent system that visitors can use to automatically get a description of the scenes they are interested in by simply pointing their smartphones to them. As compared to traditional applications, this system completely eliminates the need for indoor positioning technologies, which are unfeasible in many scenarios as they can only be employed when museum items are physically distinguishable. Experimental analysis aimed to evaluate the performance of the system in terms of accuracy of the recognition process, and the obtained results show its effectiveness in a real-world application scenario
Smart assistance for students and people living in a campus
Being part of one of the fastest growing area in Artificial Intelligence (AI), virtual assistants are nowadays part of everyone's life being integrated in almost every smart device. Alexa, Siri, Google Assistant, and Cortana are just few examples of the most famous ones. Beyond these off-the-shelf solutions, different technologies which allow to create custom assistants are available. IBM Watson, for instance, is one of the most widely-adopted question-answering framework both because of its simplicity and accessibility through public APIs. In this work, we present a virtual assistant that exploits the Watson technology to support students and staff of a smart campus at the University of Palermo. Some in progress results show the effectiveness of the approach we propose
Calibrated quantum thermometry in cavity optomechanics
Cavity optomechanics has achieved the major breakthrough of the preparation
and observation of macroscopic mechanical oscillators in peculiarly quantum
states. The development of reliable indicators of the oscillator properties in
these conditions is important also for applications to quantum technologies. We
compare two procedures to infer the oscillator occupation number, minimizing
the necessity of system calibrations. The former starts from homodyne spectra,
the latter is based on the measurement of the motional sidebands asymmetry in
heterodyne spectra. Moreover, we describe and discuss a method to control the
cavity detuning, that is a crucial parameter for the accuracy of the latter,
intrinsically superior procedure
Diffusion weighted imaging in cystic fibrosis disease: beyond morphological imaging
To explore the feasibility of diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) to assess inflammatory lung changes in patients with Cystic Fibrosis (CF) METHODS: CF patients referred for their annual check-up had spirometry, chest-CT and MRI on the same day. MRI was performed in a 1.5 T scanner with BLADE and EPI-DWI sequences (b = 0-600 s/mm(2)). End-inspiratory and end-expiratory scans were acquired in multi-row scanners. DWI was scored with an established semi-quantitative scoring system. DWI score was correlated to CT sub-scores for bronchiectasis (CF-CTBE), mucus (CF-CTmucus), total score (CF-CTtotal-score), FEV1, and BMI. T-test was used to assess differences between patients with and without DWI-hotspots
RELAP5 simulation of two-phase flow experiments in vertical helical tubes
In the framework of the studies concerning the thermalfluid dynamic phenomena in helicoidal pipes of the innovative nuclear reactor IRIS steam generators, the Department of Nuclear Engineering of the University of Palermo in collaboration with the Politecnico di Torino Department of Energetics has been engaged in a work aimed to adapt, by implementing new suitable models, RELAP5/mod3.2.2β code to simulate the thermalfluid-dynamics and geometries such as the ones involved in helicoidal pipes. In fact this code is based on one-dimensional thermal-hydraulic relationships and presents limitations to model complicated geometry such as helicoidal pipes. Therefore the code was improved with additional correlations that are valid for two-phase flow and allow to overcome the drawbacks. The validation work of the models that were added is based on the experimental data carried out at the Politecnico di Torino Department of Energetics. In this paper it will be shown that the so modified RELAP5 code allows to represent adequately the experimental data
