Iraq and Afghanistan veteransâ experiences living with their parents after separation from the military
When military service members separate from the military, many return to their families of origin, living with their parents for a period of several weeks to years. While research with veterans and their spouses has documented the particular strain of this reintegration period on veterans and their partners, little research to date has examined veteransâ experiences living with their parents. The present study sought to fill this research gap by investigating veteransâ experiences living with their parents using qualitative, in-depth interviews with Iraq and Afghanistan veterans in California. Overall, veterans appreciated the instrumental and emotional support their parents provided when they separated. However, in some cases, living with parents also produced conflict and strain. In situations where adult veteran children had difficulty with the transition to civilian life or returned with mental health problems, parents were often the first to identify these problems and to support their children in accessing appropriate care. We analyze these findings in light of family systems theory, identifying ways in which adult veteran children continue a process of differentiation while living with their parents and maintaining emotional connectedness. We suggest ways that clinicians can better support veterans and their parents through the reintegration period and recommend that programming for military families explicitly include parents of service members in addition to conjugal families
Cross-modal associations in synaesthesia: vowel colours in the ear of the beholder
Human speech conveys many forms of information, but for some exceptional individuals (synaesthetes), listening to speech sounds can automatically induce visual percepts such as colours. In this experiment, graphemeâcolour synaesthetes and controls were asked to assign colours, or shades of grey, to different vowel sounds. We then investigated whether the acoustic content of these vowel sounds influenced participantsâ colour and grey-shade choices. We found that both colour and grey-shade associations varied systematically with vowel changes. The colour effect was significant for both participant groups, but significantly stronger and more consistent for synaesthetes. Because not all vowel sounds that we used are âtranslatableâ into graphemes, we conclude that acousticâphonetic influences co-exist with established graphemic influences in the cross-modal correspondences of both synaesthetes and non-synaesthetes
Color and texture associations in voice-induced synesthesia
Voice-induced synesthesia, a form of synesthesia in which synesthetic perceptions are induced by the sounds of people's voices, appears to be relatively rare and has not been systematically studied. In this study we investigated the synesthetic color and visual texture perceptions experienced in response to different types of âvoice qualityâ (e.g., nasal, whisper, falsetto). Experiences of three different groupsâself-reported voice synesthetes, phoneticians, and controlsâwere compared using both qualitative and quantitative analysis in a study conducted online. Whilst, in the qualitative analysis, synesthetes used more color and texture terms to describe voices than either phoneticians or controls, only weak differences, and many similarities, between groups were found in the quantitative analysis. Notable consistent results between groups were the matching of higher speech fundamental frequencies with lighter and redder colors, the matching of âwhisperyâ voices with smoke-like textures, and the matching of âharshâ and âcreakyâ voices with textures resembling dry cracked soil. These data are discussed in the light of current thinking about definitions and categorizations of synesthesia, especially in cases where individuals apparently have a range of different synesthetic inducers
A photon-counting photodiode array detector for far ultraviolet (FUV) astronomy
A compact, stable, single-stage intensified photodiode array detector designed for photon-counting, far ultraviolet astronomy applications employs a saturable, 'C'-type MCP (Galileo S. MCP 25-25) to produce high gain pulses with a narrowly peaked pulse height distribution. The P-20 output phosphor exhibits a very short decay time, due to the high current density of the electron pulses. This intensifier is being coupled to a self-scanning linear photodiode array which has a fiber optic input window which allows direct, rigid mechanical coupling with minimal light loss. The array was scanned at a 250 KHz pixel rate. The detector exhibits more than adequate signal-to-noise ratio for pulse counting and event location
Coupled opto-electronic simulation of organic bulk-heterojunction solar cells: parameter extraction and sensitivity analysis
A general problem arising in computer simulations is the number of material
and device parameters, which have to be determined by dedicated experiments and
simulation-based parameter extraction. In this study we analyze measurements of
the short-circuit current dependence on the active layer thickness and
current-voltage curves in poly(3-hexylthiophene):[6,6]-phenyl-C61-butyric acid
methyl ester (P3HT:PCBM) based solar cells. We have identified a set of
parameter values including dissociation parameters that describe the
experimental data. The overall agreement of our model with experiment is good,
however a discrepancy in the thickness dependence of the current-voltage curve
questions the influence of the electric field in the dissociation process. In
addition transient simulations are analyzed which show that a measurement of
the turn-off photocurrent can be useful for estimating charge carrier

Temperature Dependence of Electron to Lattice Energy-Transfer in Single-Wall Carbon Nanotube Bundles
The electron-phonon coupling strength in single-wall carbon nanotube (SWNT)
bundles has been studied directly in the time-domain by femtosecond
time-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy. We have measured the dependence of
H(T_e,T_l), the rate of energy-transfer between the electronic system and the
lattice as a function of electron and lattice temperatures T_e and T_l. The
experiments are consistent with a T^5 dependence of H on the electron- and
lattice-temperatures, respectively. The results can be related to the e-ph mass
enhancement parameter lambda. The experimentally obtained value for
lambda/theta_D^2, where theta_D is the Debye temperature, suggests that e-ph
scattering times at the Fermi level of SWNT bundles can be exceptionally long,

Evidence for deuterium astration in the planetary nebula Sh2-216?
We present FUSE observations of the line of sight to WD0439+466 (LS V +46
21), the central star of the old planetary nebula Sh2-216. The FUSE data shows
absorption by many interstellar and stellar lines, in particular D I, H2 (J = 0
- 9), HD (J = 0 - 1), and CO. Many other stellar and ISM lines are detected in
the STIS E140M HST spectra of this sightline, which we use to determine N(HI).
We derive, for the neutral gas, D/H=(0.76 +0.12 -0.11)E-5, O/H = (0.89 +0.15
-0.11)E-4 and N/H = (3.24 +0.61-0.55)E-5. We argue that most of the gas along
this sightline is associated with the planetary nebula. The low D/H ratio is
likely the result of this gas being processed through the star (astrated) but
not mixed with the ISM. This would be the first time that the D/H ratio has
been measured in predominantly astrated gas. The O/H and N/H ratios derived
here are lower than typical values measured in other planetary nebulae likely
due to unaccounted for ionization corrections.Comment: Accepted for publication is ApJ
