    Reinforcement Learning: A Survey

This paper surveys the field of reinforcement learning from a computer-science perspective. It is written to be accessible to researchers familiar with machine learning. Both the historical basis of the field and a broad selection of current work are summarized. Reinforcement learning is the problem faced by an agent that learns behavior through trial-and-error interactions with a dynamic environment. The work described here has a resemblance to work in psychology, but differs considerably in the details and in the use of the word ``reinforcement.'' The paper discusses central issues of reinforcement learning, including trading off exploration and exploitation, establishing the foundations of the field via Markov decision theory, learning from delayed reinforcement, constructing empirical models to accelerate learning, making use of generalization and hierarchy, and coping with hidden state. It concludes with a survey of some implemented systems and an assessment of the practical utility of current methods for reinforcement learning.Comment: See http://www.jair.org/ for any accompanying file

Regulating wellbeing in the brave new quantified workplace

    Get PDF
Purpose: The purpose of the paper is to lay out the conceptual issues arising alongside the rise of sensory technologies in workplaces designed to improve wellness and productivity. Design/methodology/approach: This is a text based conceptual paper. Our approach is to throw light on some of the emerging issues with the introduction of wearable self-tracking technologies in workplaces. Findings: The paper indicates that scholars will need to put ethical issues at the heart of research on sensory tracking technologies in workplaces that aim to regulate employee behaviour via wellness initiatives. Originality/value: This is an original article. Since there is very little scholarly research in this area, it is important to begin to consider the implications of sensory technology in workplaces linked to wellness initiatives, given the probable impact it will have on work design and appraisal systems

Electroweak Baryogenesis with dimension-6 Higgs interactions

We present the computation of the baryon asymmetry in the SM amplified by dimension-6 Higgs interactions using the WKB approximation. Analyzing the one-loop potential it turns out that the phase transition is strongly first order in a wide range of the parameters. It is ensured not to wash out the net baryon number gained previously even for Higgs masses up to at least 170 GeV. In addition dimension-6 operators induce new sources of CP violation. Novel source terms which enhance the generated baryon asymmetry emerge in the transport equations. This model predicts a baryon to entropy ratio close to the observed value for a large part of the parameter space.Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures, Talk given at the 8th International Moscow School of Physic

Vibration limiting of rotors by feedback control

    Get PDF
Experimental findings of a three mass rotor with four channels of feedback control are reported. The channels are independently controllable with force being proportional to the velocity and/or instantaneous displacement from equilibrium of the shaft at the noncontacting probe locations (arranged in the vertical and horizontal attitudes near the support bearings). The findings suggest that automatic feedback control of rotors is feasible for limiting certain vibration levels. Control of one end of a rotor does afford some predictable vibration limiting of the rotor at the other end
