Investigation of the development of cracks in solder joints
Study consisted of an analytical approach, in which a mathematical model of existing printed circuit board component mounting techniques was analyzed, and an empirical investigation was performed to determine the extent of damage caused by temperature cycling of the printed circuit boards
Air-cushioning in impact problems
This paper concerns the displacement potential formulation to study the post-impact influence of an aircushioning layer on the two-dimensional impact of a liquid half-space by a rigid body. The liquid and air are both ideal and incompressible and attention is focussed on cases when the density ratio between the air and liquid is small. In particular, the correction to classical Wagner theory is analysed in detail for the impact of circular cylinders and wedges
Aerodynamic performance of a 1.25-pressure-ratio axial-flow fan stage
Aerodynamic design parameters and overall and blade-element performances of a 1.25-pressure-ratio fan stage are reported. Detailed radial surveys were made over the stable operating flow range at rotative speeds from 70 to 120 percent of design speed. At design speed, the measured stage peak efficiency of 0.872 occurred at a weight flow of 34.92 kilograms per second and a pressure ratio of 1.242. Stage stall margin is about 20 percent based on the peak efficiency and stall conditions. The overall peak efficiency for the rotor was 0.911. The overall stage performance showed no significant change when the stators were positioned at 1, 2, or 4 chords downstream of the rotor
Universal nonequilibrium signatures of Majorana zero modes in quench dynamics
The quantum evolution after a metallic lead is suddenly connected to an
electron system contains information about the excitation spectrum of the
combined system. We exploit this type of "quantum quench" to probe the presence
of Majorana fermions at the ends of a topological superconducting wire. We
obtain an algebraically decaying overlap (Loschmidt echo) for large times after the quench, with
a universal critical exponent =1/4 that is found to be remarkably
robust against details of the setup, such as interactions in the normal lead,
the existence of additional lead channels or the presence of bound levels
between the lead and the superconductor. As in recent quantum dot experiments,
this exponent could be measured by optical absorption, offering a new signature
of Majorana zero modes that is distinct from interferometry and tunneling
spectroscopy.Comment: 9 pages + appendices, 4 figures. v3: published versio
Development of a lithium secondary battery separator
A nonporous membrane based on the polymerization of 2,3-dihydrofuran followed by crosslinking in situ was prepared. The material is compatible with rechargeable Li battery components and, when swollen with an appropriate solvent such as tetrahydrofuran, exhibits separator resistance and Li transport equivalent to Celgard
Three-dimensional oblique water-entry problems at small\ud deadrise angles
This paper extends Wagner theory for the ideal, incompressible normal impact of rigid bodies that are nearly parallel to the surface of a liquid half-space. The impactors considered are three-dimensional and have an oblique impact velocity. A variational formulation is used to reveal the relationship between the oblique and corresponding normal impact solutions. In the case of axisymmetric impactors, several geometries are considered in which singularities develop in the boundary of the effective wetted region. We present the corresponding pressure profiles and models for the splash sheets
