Space-Time Isogeometric Analysis of Parabolic Evolution Equations
We present and analyze a new stable space-time Isogeometric Analysis (IgA)
method for the numerical solution of parabolic evolution equations in fixed and
moving spatial computational domains. The discrete bilinear form is elliptic on
the IgA space with respect to a discrete energy norm. This property together
with a corresponding boundedness property, consistency and approximation
results for the IgA spaces yields an a priori discretization error estimate
with respect to the discrete norm. The theoretical results are confirmed by
several numerical experiments with low- and high-order IgA spaces
Structural Analysis and Performance-Based Validation of a Composite Wing Spar
Electric-motor powered aircraft possess the ability to operate with efficient energy delivery, but lack the operational range of internal combustion engine powered aircraft. This range limitation requires the use of high aspect ratio, thin-chord wings to minimize aerodynamic drag losses, which results in highly loaded composite spar structures. High aspect ratio wings are required to increase mission durations for a NASA-developed experimental multi-rotor electric powered aircraft denoted as the Scalable Convergent Electric Propulsion Technology and Operations Research (SCEPTOR) or X-57. This paper examines the structural performance of the composite main wing spars to validate spar strength using ply-based laminate finite element methods. Geometric scaling of a main spar test-section was initially proposed for proof-testing but sacrificed stability. Ply-based structures modeling with local structural features was implemented as a risk-reduction methodology. Ply-based modeling was selected to augment the conventional building block approach to reduce risk, and leverage a performance-based approval processes encouraged in Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) design guidance. Therefore, ply-based laminate modeling of the full-scale main spar and forward spar shear-web attachments were subsequently undertaken to determine load path complexity with predicted flight loads. Ply-based modeling included stress concentrations and interlaminate behavior at interface locations that can be obscured in traditional finite element sizing models. Analysis of the wing spar laminate ply-based models compared with bearing test coupon performance was used to reduce future wing assembly proof-testing burden and facilitate performance-based flight hardware safety for the X-57 experimental aircraft
The release of a captive-raised female African Elephant <em>(Loxodonta africana</em>) in the Okavango Delta, Botswana
Wild female elephants live in close-knit matrilineal groups and housing captive elephants in artificial social groupings can cause significant welfare issues for individuals not accepted by other group members. We document the release of a captive-raised female elephant used in the safari industry because of welfare and management problems. She was fitted with a satellite collar, and spatial and behavioural data were collected over a 17-month period to quantify her interactions with the wild population. She was then monitored infrequently for a further five-and-a-half years. We observed few signs of aggression towards her from the wild elephants with which she socialized. She used an area of comparable size to wild female elephants, and this continued to increase as she explored new areas. Although she did not fully integrate into a wild herd, she had three calves of her own, and formed a social unit with another female and her calf that were later released from the same captive herd. We recommend that release to the wild be considered as a management option for other captive female elephants
Metal-only Lewis pairs between group 10 metals and Tl(I) or Ag(I): insights into the electronic consequences of Z-type ligand bindingâ€
Complexes bearing electron rich transition metal centers, especially those displaying coordinative unsaturation, are well-suited to form reverse-dative σ-interactions with Lewis acids. Herein we demonstrate the generality of zerovalent, group 10 m-terphenyl isocyanide complexes to form reverse-dative σ-interactions to Tl(I) and Ag(I) centers. Structural and spectroscopic investigations of these metal-only Lewis pairs (MOLPs) has allowed insight into the electronic consequences of Lewis-acid ligation within the primary coordination sphere of a transition metal center. Treatment of the bis-isocyanide complex, Pt(CNArDipp2)2 (ArDipp2 = 2,6-(2,6-(i-Pr)2C6H3)2C6H3) with TlOTf (OTf = [O3SCF3]−) yields the Pt/Tl MOLP [TlPt(CNArDipp2)2]OTf (1). 1H NMR and IR spectroscopic studies on 1, and its Pd congener [TlPd(CNArDipp2)2]OTf (2), demonstrate that the M → Tl interaction is labile in solution. However, treatment of complexes 1 and 2 with Na[BArF4] (ArF = 3,5-(CF3)2C6H3) produces [TlPt(CNArDipp2)2]BArF4 (3) and [TlPd(CNArDipp2)2]BArF4 (4), in which Tl(I) binding is shown to be static by IR spectroscopy and, in the case of 3, 195Pt NMR spectroscopy as well. This result provides strong evidence that the M → Tl linkages can be attributed primarily to σ-donation from the group 10 metal to Tl, as loss of ionic stabilization of Tl by the triflate anion is compensated for by increasing the degree of M → Tl σ-donation. In addition, X-ray Absorption Near-Edge Spectroscopy (XANES) on the Pd/Tl and Ni/Tl MOLPs, [TlPd(CNArDipp2)2]OTf (2) and [TlNi(CNArMes2)3]OTf, respectively, is used to illustrate that the formation of a reverse-dative σ-interaction with Tl(I) does not alter the spectroscopic oxidation state of the group 10 metal. Also reported is the ability of M(CNArDipp2)2 (M = Pt, Pd) to form MOLPs with Ag(I), yielding the complexes [AgM(CNArDipp2)2]OTf (5, M = Pt; 6, M = Pd). As was determined for the Tl-containing MOLPs 1–4, it is shown that the spectroscopic oxidation states of the group 10 metal in 5 and 6 are essentially unchanged compared to the zerovalent precursors M(CNArDipp2)2. However, in the case of 5 and 6, the formation of a dative M → Ag σ-bonding interaction facilitates the binding of Lewis bases to the group 10 metal trans to Ag, illustrating the potential of acceptor fragments to open up new coordination sites on transition metal complexes without formal, two-electron oxidation
A four year longitudinal sero-epidemiological study of bovine herpesvirus type-1 (BHV-1) in adult cattle in 107 unvaccinated herds in south west England
Background: Bovine herpesvirus type-1 (BHV-1) is an important pathogen of cattle that presents with a
variety of clinical signs, including the upper respiratory tract infection infectious bovine rhinotracheitis
(IBR). A seroepidemiological study of BHV-1 antibodies was conducted in England from 2002 – 2004: 29,782 blood samples were taken from 15,736 cattle from 114 herds which were visited on up to three occasions. Antibody concentration was measured using a commercial ELISA. Farm management
information was collected using an interview questionnaire, and herd size and cattle movements were obtained from the cattle tuberculosis testing database and the British Cattle Movement Service. Hierarchical statistical models were used to investigate associations between cattle and herd variables and the continuous outcome percentage positive (PP) values from the ELISA test in unvaccinated herds.
Results: There were 7 vaccinated herds, all with at least one seropositive bovine. In unvaccinated herds 83.2% had at least one BHV-1 seropositive bovine, and the mean cattle and herd BHV-1 seroprevalence were 42.5% and 43.1% respectively. There were positive associations between PP value, age, herd size, presence of dairy cattle. Adult cattle in herds with grower cattle had lower PP values than those in herds without grower cattle. Purchased cattle had significantly lower PP values than homebred cattle, whereas
cattle in herds that were totally restocked after the foot-and-mouth epidemic in 2001 had significantly higher PP values than those in continuously stocked herds. Samples taken in spring and summer had significantly lower PP values than those taken in winter, whereas those taken in autumn had significantly higher PP values than those taken in winter. The risks estimated from a logistic regression model with a binary outcome (seropositive yes/no) were similar.
Conclusion: The prevalence of BHV-1 seropositivity in cattle and herds has increased since the 1970s.
Although the study population prevalence of BHV-1 was temporally stable during study period, the
associations between serological status and cattle age, herd size, herd type, presence of young stock and
restocked versus continuously stocked herds indicate that there is heterogeneity between herds and so
potential for further spread of BHV-1 within and between herds
A four year longitudinal sero-epidemiology study of Neospora caninum in adult cattle from 114 cattle herds in south west England : associations with age, herd and dam-offspring pairs
Background: Neosporosis caused by the protozoan parasite Neospora caninum, is an economically
important cause of abortion, stillbirth, low milk yield, reduced weight gain and premature culling in
cattle. Consequently, a seroepidemiological study of N. caninum antibodies was conducted in
England with 29,782 samples of blood taken from 15,736 cattle from 114 herds visited on three
occasions at yearly intervals. Herds were categorised into lower (< 10%) and higher (≥ 10%)
median herd seroprevalence. Hierarchical models were run to investigate associations between the
sample to positive (S/P) ratio and herd and cattle factors.
Results: Ninety-four percent of herds had at least one seropositive cow; 12.9% of adult cattle had
at least one seropositive test. Approximately 90% of herds were seropositive at all visits; 9 herds
(8%) changed serological status between visits. The median N. caninum seroprevalence in positive
herds was 10% (range 0.4% to 58.8%). There was a positive association between the serostatus of
offspring and dams that were ever seropositive. In the hierarchical model of low seroprevalence
herds there was no significant association between S/P ratio and cattle age. There was a significantly
lower S/P ratio in cattle in herds that were totally restocked after the foot-and-mouth epidemic of
2001 compared with those from continuously stocked herds and cattle purchased into these herds
had a higher S/P ratio than homebred cattle. In the model of high seroprevalence herds the S/P ratio
increased with cattle age, but was not associated with restocking or cattle origin.
Conclusion: There were no strong temporal changes in herd seroprevalence of N. caninum but
90% of herds had some seropositive cattle over this time period. Vertical transmission from
seropositive dams appeared to occur in all herds. In herds with a high seroprevalence the increasing
S/P ratio in 2–4 year old cattle is suggestive of exposure to N. caninum: horizontal transmission
between adult cattle, infection from a local source or recrudescence and abortions. Between-herd
movements of infected cattle enhance the spread of N. caninum, particularly into low
seroprevalence herds. Some restocked herds had little exposure to N. caninum, while in others
infection had spread in the time since restocking
