An assessment of the strength of knots and splices used as eye terminations in a sailing environment
Research into knots, splices and other methods of forming an eye termination has been limited, despite the fact that they are essential and strongly affect the performance of a rope. The aim of this study was to carry out a comprehensive initial assessment of the breaking strength of eye terminations commonly used in a sailing environment, thereby providing direction for further work in the field. Supports for use in a regular tensile testing machine were specially developed to allow individual testing of each sample and a realistic spread of statistical data to be obtained. Over 180 break tests were carried out on four knots (the bowline, double bowline, figure-of-eight loop and perfection loop) and two splices (three-strand eye splice and braid-on-braid splice). The factors affecting their strength were investigated. A statistical approach to the analysis of the results was adopted. The type of knot was found to have a significant effect on the strength. This same effect was seen in both types of rope construction (three-strand and braid-on-braid). Conclusions were also drawn as to the effect of splice length, eye size, manufacturer and rope diameter on the breaking strength of splices. Dakota Gold®-brand dried distiller’s grains with solubles: effects on finishing performance and carcass characteristics
A 153-day trial was conducted using
345 heifers to determine optimal level of
Dakota Gold dried distiller’s grains with
solubles (DDGS) in finishing diets based
on steam-flaked corn. Diets contained six
levels of DDGS: 0%, 15%, 30%, 45%,
60%, and 75%. DDGS affected average
daily gain, final weight and hot carcass
weight, all of which increased with 15%
DDGS and then decreased as additional
DDGS was added. Growth performance of
heifers fed 30% DDGS was similar to those
fed no DDGS. In general, heifers were
overfinished, with 61% being Yield Grade
3 or greater and 83% grading Choice or
Prime. Backfat tended to decrease with
addition of DDGS, and kidney, pelvic, and
heart fat and marbling scores tended to be
greatest for intermediate levels of DDGS.

Trialling technologies to reduce hospital in‐patient falls: an agential realist analysis
This paper analyses the 'failure' of a patient safety intervention. Our study was part of an RCT of bed and bedside chair pressure sensors linked to radio pagers to prevent bedside falls in older people admitted to hospital. We use agential realism within science and technology studies to examine the fall and its prevention as a situated phenomenon of knowledge that is made and unmade through intra-actions between environment, culture, humans and technologies. We show that neither the intervention (the pressure sensor system), nor the outcome (fall prevention) could be disentangled from the broader sociomaterial context of the ward, the patients, the nurses and (especially) their work through the RCT. We argue that the RCT design, by virtue of its unacknowledged assumptions, played a part in creating the negative findings. The study also raises wider questions about the kind of subjectivities, agencies and power relations these entanglements might effect and (re)produce in the hospital ward
Quantum control and the Strocchi map
Identifying the real and imaginary parts of wave functions with coordinates
and momenta, quantum evolution may be mapped onto a classical Hamiltonian
system. In addition to the symplectic form, quantum mechanics also has a
positive-definite real inner product which provides a geometrical
interpretation of the measurement process. Together they endow the quantum
Hilbert space with the structure of a K\"{a}ller manifold. Quantum control is
discussed in this setting. Quantum time-evolution corresponds to smooth
Hamiltonian dynamics and measurements to jumps in the phase space. This adds
additional power to quantum control, non unitarily controllable systems
becoming controllable by ``measurement plus evolution''. A picture of quantum
evolution as Hamiltonian dynamics in a classical-like phase-space is the
appropriate setting to carry over techniques from classical to quantum control.
This is illustrated by a discussion of optimal control and sliding mode

Time-delayed feedback control of unstable periodic orbits near a subcritical Hopf bifurcation
We show that Pyragas delayed feedback control can stabilize an unstable
periodic orbit (UPO) that arises from a generic subcritical Hopf bifurcation of
a stable equilibrium in an n-dimensional dynamical system. This extends results
of Fiedler et al. [PRL 98, 114101 (2007)], who demonstrated that such feedback
control can stabilize the UPO associated with a two-dimensional subcritical
Hopf normal form. Pyragas feedback requires an appropriate choice of a feedback
gain matrix for stabilization, as well as knowledge of the period of the
targeted UPO. We apply feedback in the directions tangent to the
two-dimensional center manifold. We parameterize the feedback gain by a modulus
and a phase angle, and give explicit formulae for choosing these two parameters
given the period of the UPO in a neighborhood of the bifurcation point. We
show, first heuristically, and then rigorously by a center manifold reduction
for delay differential equations, that the stabilization mechanism involves a
highly degenerate Hopf bifurcation problem that is induced by the time-delayed
feedback. When the feedback gain modulus reaches a threshold for stabilization,
both of the genericity assumptions associated with a two-dimensional Hopf
bifurcation are violated: the eigenvalues of the linearized problem do not
cross the imaginary axis as the bifurcation parameter is varied, and the real
part of the cubic coefficient of the normal form vanishes. Our analysis of this
degenerate bifurcation problem reveals two qualitatively distinct cases when
unfolded in a two-parameter plane. In each case, Pyragas-type feedback
successfully stabilizes the branch of small-amplitude UPOs in a neighborhood of
the original bifurcation point, provided that the phase angle satisfies a

A mixed methods and triangulation model for increasing the accuracy of adherence and sexual behaviour data: the Microbicides Development Programme.
Background: The collection of accurate data on adherence and sexual behaviour is crucial in microbicide (and other HIV-related) research. In the absence of a "gold standard" the collection of such data relies largely on participant self-reporting. After reviewing available methods, this paper describes a mixed method/triangulation model for generating more accurate data on adherence and sexual behaviour in a multi-centre vaginal microbicide clinical trial. In a companion paper some of the results from this model are presented [1].Methodology/Principal Findings: Data were collected from a random subsample of 725 women (7.7% of the trial population) using structured interviews, coital diaries, in-depth interviews, counting returned gel applicators, focus group discussions, and ethnography. The core of the model was a customised, semi-structured in-depth interview. There were two levels of triangulation: first, discrepancies between data from the questionnaires, diaries, in-depth interviews and applicator returns were identified, discussed with participants and, to a large extent, resolved; second, results from individual participants were related to more general data emerging from the focus group discussions and ethnography. A democratic and equitable collaboration between clinical trialists and qualitative social scientists facilitated the success of the model, as did the preparatory studies preceding the trial. The process revealed some of the underlying assumptions and routinised practices in "clinical trial culture" that are potentially detrimental to the collection of accurate data, as well as some of the shortcomings of large qualitative studies, and pointed to some potential solutions.Conclusions/Significance: The integration of qualitative social science and the use of mixed methods and triangulation in clinical trials are feasible, and can reveal (and resolve) inaccuracies in data on adherence and sensitive behaviours, as well as illuminating aspects of "trial culture" that may also affect data accuracy
